It is pretty sad isn't it? Haven't really seen that much of it on Damo's official boards oddly enough.

Yeah I'm getting really sick of it!So Damien Rice,eh?

daol20
07-27-2003, 07:25 PM
Right, well what we need is for all new comers to the site (no matter where your from) who read all the OLD posts about all that stuff to leave it alone, and just stick to why we're all here, Damo!

So where were we Sionna? Damo! If you were to have Damo playa cover version of any song, what song would you choose???

Sionna
07-27-2003, 07:37 PM
Mmmm let me think......maybe Mojo Pin by Jeff Buckley,I could see him putting his stamp on that,or maybe even 'Lover you should have come over'..... Any other suggestions?

daol20
07-27-2003, 07:43 PM
I'd like to hear him have a bash at "The Space Between" or "Tripping Billies" by Dave Mathews. Reckon he'd make a great attempt at'em!!

(btw: Im also a Dave Mathews fan in case anyone hasnt spotted)

Gatsby
07-27-2003, 08:32 PM
yeah you really have had a sheltered life if u have never heard of mic christopher... go out and get Skylarkin cos it was one of the best albums of 2002 without a doubt

Dont know if he's Irish, but i reckon my problem is, that i dont EVER check out the Irish charts, or listen to Irish radio etc. I listen to CD's or stuff from the net. And i'm missing out on all that! Need to start checkin out more artists and subscribe to Hotpress or something!

Gatsby
07-27-2003, 08:45 PM
yeah hotpress has alot of info in it... but u just need to hear by word of mouth really... The artsists u really need to listen to are - mic christopher, mark geary, damien dempsey, paddy casey, nina hynes, david kitt, mundy, bell x1, relish!... they are all kinda mainstream in the ireland scene at the moment and all are as equally good as each other

Sionna
07-27-2003, 08:47 PM
Yeah he's Irish, died last year or the year b4.Real pity!

daol20
07-27-2003, 08:50 PM
Actually have stuff from most of them (CD's & mp3's). Heard of them all except 'mic christopher'.oh and you put me wide to mark geary aswell! I have Kitt's album also, but dont rate it too highly

07-27-2003, 08:53 PM

I have to beg to differ with u folks... ILOVED David Kitt's album. It's so layed back and chilled out (completely different to Damo's where the emotion level is like 110%). I don't think David Kitt will ever get near the amount of success that Damo is destined for, probably cos Damo's album is a lot more commercial. But I luv em both!!!

daol20
07-28-2003, 07:16 AM
I'm gonna give Kitts album another try.......

07-28-2003, 01:32 PM
Oooh, I love the idea of picking cover songs! I think covers are fascinating.

Sionna, I agree with you....anything by Jeff Buckley would be stellar, however my personal favorite pick would have to be "Last Goodbye". I think Damien would do an amazing acoustic with that one. Can you imagine the "kiiiiisss me, please kiss me...."?! *sigh*

And daol, DMB is indeed huge here.....I've been a fan of theirs from the beginning. If Damien ever covered either "#41" or their "Cry Freedom" I think I might die of sheer ecstacy right there on the spot!

daol20
07-28-2003, 04:51 PM
Yeah, 2 great tracks! Actually anything by DMB who do i reckon!

I've got a live version of "tripping billies" mpg. Its witha small crowd and Dave isplaying with Tim Reynolds (excellent guitarist) andit's amazing. They really work well together. and i've tried to get an audio version mp3 or othrwise, and every live version i can find, although is that song and with Tim,isnt the same version as the video i have.

You should have seen that hastle i had trying to find out the nameof the band! I heard one song on T4 one Sunday, It was just Dave playingsolo, and it was "The Space Between" and was amazing! And right at the endwhen they saidthe name of the artist and song i was distracted and missed it. I looked all over the net but without the name it was always gonna hard. Theni heard it an ad one day, a Nokia ad. I searched theTV ad music websites but couldnt find anything. I emailed T4 and said that i heard thissong on the station, and discribed him, and that it was in an ad. Someone emailed me back with all the details, and i've been a huge fan ever since!!

And now im tierd from all that typing! Im off to bed!!

bumblebee
07-28-2003, 06:10 PM
Wow, Daragh (may I call you that?) that's some work to go through to find out who they were! But it just proves you have excellent taste!

I went through a similar experience with Josh Ritter. His "Come and Find Me" was played at the very end of a "Six Feet Under" episode (a weekly cable show on HBO here) and I said "I must find out who this guy is!". I made a mad dash for the 6 Feet Under website & luckily they list every song used in every episode, so he wasn't difficult to track down. I've been enjoying most of his stuff since then.

Back to Dave Matthews: Do you have the album version of "Tripping Billies" or were you specifically looking for that live version mp3? That whole album is excellent.....among my top 10 albums of all time, which is a big complement b/cI'm really old so I know a lot of stuff! My second fav album of theirs is "Under the Table and Dreaming". I like their newer releases, too, but it's their earlier stuff that I truly adore.

I've 27 songs from various albums and live performances. I've not got any CD's yet. But i havent bought many CD's in tha last while (ever since i got broadband). Its all internet stuff.mp3's.

I had a whole lot more, but lost loads of them in the "BIG" accident i had a few months back! Dont want to talk about that! Its too painfull!!

PS: We get "Six Feet Under" here also!

Nah, I think Damo should do a real poppy song for the laugh...Like Travis doing Britney and Mundy doin 'Whenever, wherever' by Shakira. Hillarious. Oh btw what was that one that Jack L did?

Sionna

I think Jack L did a Kylie Minogue song, though I might be wrong.Dont forget Glen Hansard doing Cry me a river, which I love!

I, as a liberal American, at that, a liberal democrat believe all in the world are entitled to their opinion. I understand the feelings of the outsiders to the topic of war. And I get why some Americans want war. But those of you who are not Americans have got to understand not all Americans want war. Only a good sixty-five percent and whereas that is not too impressive, there are those out there who do not want it whether you would like to believe it or not. Mostly pro-war people are Republicans and capitalist pigs. So please, do not bash Americans when not all agree with war.

Cheers from the U.S.! I would like to hear some Neil Young (Cortez the Killer), Peter Gabriel (Don't Give Up, Mercy Street) or Nick Drake(anything) in the mix, toss in a pinch of Dave and a dash of Kelley Joe Phelps's slide guitar (just a personal fave...completely different style) that makes an interesting album.

just a thought...

I agree kavu.. Im seeing Kelly this weekend...Does it get better than this?! Saw him twice already and each time I am humbly reminded how well I play and basically throw my baby(martin d-28) in the closet for a month or so.. Kelly and me are at alove/hate relationship status now:)

Back to dave matthews I think his best album has to be live at luther college with tim reynolds, the versions of crash into me and #41 are brilliant. John Mayer dosnt sound alot unlike dave either which isnt a bad thing his live version of comfortable is well worth a look as is his cover of message in a bottle

Scon
08-09-2003, 09:28 AM
Oh I can confirm it Daragh ;) I'm a nutcase about their music, one of those scarier nutcases.
Gally, there's been a lot of debate about which sounds better... DMB, Dave&Tim or Dave solo. I have to admit I have a preference for Dave&Tim, L@LC ("") did hook me on them all those years ago. I have a few more bootlegs with them doing the more recent DMB songs and they work even better together now. Tim's solo songs during one show in particular were phenomenal.
All that said, the full band has a lot to offer that Dave&Tim can't, so I'd never want just one form of the music to exist.

DMB fans would kill you for saying Mayer sounds like them! :D Perhaps you mean just Dave's voice. I still don't hear it but each to their own. I think that guys studio stuff is terrible, but I saw him at Whelans last year and he plays well live. Pity the audience wouldn't have sounded out of place at a Westlife show.

Scon
08-09-2003, 09:29 AM
Oh and the guitar! Fender are a very respected brand so I'm sure it's a good one. I don't know the particular model well though. If you feel right playing it you'll know it's a good one. Enjoy (c:

I would agree with you that DMB is better than John Mayer no question butI thinkhis voice does sound fairly similar and he credits dave as one of his influences. I'd have to say some of the songs are a bit boybandish in the lyrics probably why u get some of them westlife fansat his shows which is no doubt annoying I have his live album any given thursday and it would be better if there was less screaming in the middle of songs alright! On the whole Band Vs Dave & Tim I'd agree that yes both have the positives Carter is probably the best drummer in the world and welcome in any song! But I'd have to admit I'm a sucker for the acoustic guitar and thats why I especially like that album Seen DMB live in giants stadium 2 years ago and they were amazing havnt seen John and I would be a bigger DMB fanthan John Mayer so sorry if caused any offense to DMB fans out there!

Scon

I like Mayer when it's just him and his guitar. When he brings in other musicians, they're the horrible 'play-by-numbers' session types who give him that horribly tacky overproduced style. The mayer/dave comparisoms are everywhere, and Mayer does list Dave as an influence, yes. I just find it funny how quickly DMB fansshun the guy.

I really liked him when I only had a few live tracks of him on acoustic solo and didn't know much else. I was really disappointed when I listened to 'Room For Squares'. So it was good for me to see him live breaking out into those SRV guitar solo's, seeing him loving it (c: Made me realise he still has something live. So I still wonder what the hell he was thinking when the album was being produced? Maybe he had no say, I dunno. He's a nice guy in person though. I have that live album but only gave it one or two listens. His live recordings are sounding too much like the studio stuff to me now.

I'm afraid for me it's going to same way with Howie Day. He blew me away live and I got his album straight away at the venue. The production didn't help any of the songs and they didn't come across nearly aswell as they did live. No creativeness or spark from the backing musicians, they seemed to just be doing the bare minimum required for the job, then leaving for the next one. I still enjoyed the album though, it had something about it. But recently I've heard some clips of his new studio stuff and I'm very worried )c: It's going horribly into the tacky area of over-production and over-simpliified backing musicians. Where Mayer has gone. As long as he keeps what I love about the guy live, I'll always be a fan though.

So as you can tell, I hate that 'pop' sounding production you hear on so many singer-songwriter's albums like Mayer and Mraz. It sounds dead, has no soul and no creativity to me.Some love it though, and good for them.

I agree on Carter Beaufordbeing one of the better drummers out there, yep. I always love his solo from Hallowe'enfrom the Recently EP. There's a thousand live performances that come to mind from bootlegs too.

My replies are starting to get way too long these days )c:
