Okay just came home from a party where there was i or 2 comments about Damien Rice:

1)Eskimofriend is some sort of drug, "so I look to my eskimofriend, when I'm down..."

2)In Rule no.2/Nine Crimes, rule no.7 should be about kevin not going to heaven (????)

3)Damien actually didnt grow up in Kildare but in Galway(cause apparently thats where the hippies of Ireland are from)

Anyway,I thought they were funny

Isn't his 'Eskimo friend' a Finnish friendof hiswho happends to look like or remind him of an eskimo?? Not sure about No.2 but i reckon that No.3 is just people voicing their opinion on something they dont know too much about.......but thats just me!

thats true daol but i really prefer sionna's mates theory... i can relate to that alot more!! i never actually thought of that and it does actually give the song more depth than it already has!

The other 2 theories suck tho! tell ur mates they arent liked and they definately cant stay

Yeah i agree! I'd like to thinkthat his songs had more hidden depth into them that just telling a story! Allows for a greater level of appreciation!!

Gatsby

keep the accent... its what makes him good... he isnt trying to be something he isnt by putting on a stereotypical american style accent he is singing it in his native thick dublin accent with a bit of a christy moore tinge into it and thats why i like him

Ha, ha, cool story! I first heard him on "Mystery Train" - the program that launched "Other Voices". I was completely blown away. His "Other Voices" appearance was awesome.

Such a unique style and I admire the guy for standing up for what he believes in, so I make allowences for a poorrhyme or two. I have both albums, the last single and some live tracks.

If ye like Damien Dempsey, what do ppl think of John Spillane from Cork? Or have ye even heard him? Personally I like him alot.

P.S. Alot of my friends that were at David Gray in Killarney gave out like sh*t about Damien Dempsey. They obviuosly just didn't get it, d'you think?? They had never heard of him b4

I think Damien Dempesy isn't for everyone, and that's OK, too.

Never heard of John Spillane. Does he have a web site or something?

Angela

I checked out John Spillane. He sounds very good. Sounds like he's quite a bit different live than on record. It always takes me a while to get into singer/songwriters, so tyhat's really all I can say at this point.

Why do you say he isn't for everybody?

FredDaNinjaPunk
07-29-2003, 03:33 PM
I know alot of my mates don't like him, that's all. They think he's too folksy!

Angela
07-29-2003, 04:46 PM
Well, if that's the only complaint .... !

FredDaNinjaPunk
07-30-2003, 10:30 AM
Yeah he's pretty good alright from what I've heard. He always plays in or around UCC but I've never caught a full show, only a couple of songs each time. Must change that when I go back.

To be honest, I haven't heard much of Damien Dempsey myself only what I've listened to on the net. I'd say I could listen to him though, especially live.

Angela
07-30-2003, 11:38 AM
Fred, if you can, see if you can watch a copy of Damien Dempsey's 'Other Voices' episode. Shows him at his best, I think (and local fans agree.)

Gatsby
07-30-2003, 11:49 AM
it takes a while to get into himi think... i was judging him by Damien Rice standards as i usually do with artists so he failed at the singing and his rhymes were pathetic when i heard them for the first time live... but theres just something special about him and after a good few listens it totally grows on u

Angela
