violin pick-up question

does anyone have any suggestions about how to wire a violin (not of the electric variety) in order to get a clean sound while playing at a venue? it sounds like sh*t through a mic and the pick-ups i've been trying to adapt are dangerously close to scratching my violin, which i'd like to avoid.
