About: (#3003) - "Damien Rice / Patty Griffin"
AUSTIN CITY LIMITS gets introspective as the series brings viewers singer/songwriters Damien Rice and Patty Griffin. Rice is well known in his native Ireland for his intense and category-defying songs. Griffin crafts deeply personal songs that become universally emotional through her graceful voice. (10/16/2004)

Wooohooo!! Two of my favorites!! smileys/smiley4.gifI actually love Austin City Limits... it airs on public television and even when I didn't have cable TV with good ole PBS you still had Dr. Who, Austin City Limits, and basically decent programming for free! I will definitely be tuned in (with tape in decksmileys/smiley2.gif) for this one!

Thanks for the heads up, Brendan! smileys/smiley32.gif

Yeah, you asked me about it way back then. I haven't forgotten to look for it, but Brendan beat me smileys/smiley6.gifsmileys/smiley2.gif

They have an archive, too, so there might eventually have clips:

I'm not sure Felix but I'll record it (sure others will too!) and maybe we could get it to Emmett somehow to put up on the site? It's recorded in Austin, Texas and only airs on Public Television so don't know if you can get it over there. The show itself usually lasts for an hour and they feature 2 or 3 artists, so Damien's segment will probably be at least a half hour I'd think.

How long ago was it recorded? During the last USsweep or sometime last fall/winter??

ps- thanks for the link, Angela! smileys/smiley1.gif

Someone would have to record it directly to a PC, I guess. They have PAL TV over in Ireland (and most of the rest of the world), but we (you and I) will be recording a NTSC VHS. I don't have a capture card, though smileys/smiley5.gif

Emmett's PM to me indicatedthis was recorded around June 7th.

SisterMidnight

Ooookayyy... ya lost me already, Ange!smileys/smiley36.gif Capture card? Now that I think of it I guess they do have different tape formats in Europe... hmm... we must find a way to get this to the European eskimos tho! I'm sure they would do the same for us! (okay I'm going to sound like a total techno idiot but is it possible to record from TV to DVD? or is there a program like Audiograbber that would capture video? Emmett got those showclips from Ireland up somehow...)

Emmett's PM to me indicatedthis was recorded around June 7th.

I've never done it. But there are a lot of US eskimos around, hopefully some gadget freaks smileys/smiley36.gif

Yes, there are DVD's that can record. I think it's easier if you have cable and a TV capture card. You can record the TV signal straight to the hard drive. I think loveless is doing that.

Yes I have a Voodoo 3 3500 graphics card with built-in TV Tuner (http://www.sysopt.com/reviews/3500tv/boardpod-lg.jpg)

but I'm getting rid of that this week with a new ATI 9600 All In Wonder card.

Damn, I might even have a TV tuner myself. Those are two coxial cable connectors, right? Though my cable is in another room and I don't have a laptop. smileys/smiley5.gif

Loveless
10-06-2004, 07:55 PM
With the old TV tuner I had a TV aerial plugged straight into the back of the card and just used the signal from that, but yeah the new ATI can take in the Cable TV feed.

I have the exact same problem as you Angela.. need to run a coaxial cable to bring the Cable signal upstairs to the PC.

Have to get it done by Friday cos Other Voices 2 returns on Friday night and I want to start recording it with the new card.

Sorry Ange but you're the resident igloo techie.smileys/smiley2.gif I have a TV out too that works with an "S" adapter... ???smileys/smiley5.gif Ah sh*t I'm out of my league! Wish I knew more about this stuff! smileys/smiley18.gifAre there no American Eskimos that can help out here?? C 'mon guys! The 16th is coming up!! Any ideas? Anyone??

You gonna send a tape to Emmett, Ange? Will VHS work in Europe then? Are there copyright issues we should be aware of as far as posting it on the site? Have I annoyed you enough with my endless questions yet? smileys/smiley4.gif

I'm just really looking forward to the show (Damien and Patty!) and wish we could share it with our other eskimo friends, ya know? smileys/smiley1.gif

Angela
10-12-2004, 10:04 PM
TV-out is if you want to connect a regular TV to your PC. Windows XP supports two monitors, so you could add a TV to your regular PC/PC-monitor set up. Why would you want to do such thing? Maybe for viewing your DVD's on a cheap large screenTV using your computer's DVD drive.

The TV's here in the US differ from the Irish ones! our VHS tapes are NTSC format and in most of Europe the TV's have a higher resolution than our US TV's and to take advantage of that, the tapes are in PAL format.

I know, I know. The irony! The average American watches 6 hours (?) TV in poor quality and the Germans, for instance, watch on average only 2 hours TV but have the better TV's! http://www.eskimofriends.com/forum/smileys/smiley13.gif

http://www.eskimofriends.com/forum/smileys/smiley24.gifYoucan have aNTSC VHS converted to a PAL DVD for $20 or so.

Apparently it depends on what market you are in. If you go here: http://www.pbs.org/klru/austin/tvschedule/localtimes.htmlyou can look for a local broadcast by ZIP code. There's no listing for Boston whatsoever for this month. smileys/smiley19.gif

Yeah when we saw him after Amie my son turned to me and said "Did that just change your heartbeat? Because it changed mine?!" I just nodded looking amazed. I'm not sure what it did but it totally floored me! It was very intense. I think you're right on the interpretation there, Felix. I think the noise at the end of Amie is made by turning the speed of his looping pedal down. I couldn't move when he did it when I saw him. Also, when I saw him, the room went black and then a spot light was shone on a disco ball wich sent little lights all over the room. Really a good special effects combination considering how little it takes to make it.

I did watch and record the show Friday night. Honestly... not one of Damien's best performances imo.smileys/smiley5.gif I've always thought the ACL crowd would be a hard one to play to tho. I mean, it's Texas, and if you have kind of country/twangy material you can work the crowd better. Obviously Damien doesn't have anythingeven slightly resemblingtwang going on... thank god!! smileys/smiley4.gifHe did do the distortion/looping bit at the end of Amie but it seemed abbreviated and Krystian was right! The crowd looked downright confused! smileys/smiley36.gifOtherwise it was a very reserved performance and stuck to tracks from "O" with little embellishment or departure. I think it would have been better with Tomo there and Shane might as well not have been because I couldn't even really hear him. I found myself looking around going "Where's Shane?!" smileys/smiley4.gif

Patty Griffin gave a pretty good performance, but artists in general never seem to be completely at ease on Austin City Limits to me. (Maybe that's just me. I'm just always tickled to see quality acts... in any venue.) But Patty does have some kind of country-ish tunes and can take her voice there too... tho that is just a sample of what she does and is capable of doing... but she wisely pulled those numbers out for the Austin crowd.

I'm not saying Damien, Lisa, Vyv and Shane's performance was bad just not one of their best. They didn't seem to be feeling it. And the mix was off, sound-wise. I'm blaming it on the venue and their crappy soundman. smileys/smiley2.gif
