I'm a mother of a 3 year old daughter residing in Jakarta, Indonesia.

I'm trying to write a few children story books. ONe of them is about a trip to Alaska. the problem is, I've never been to Alaska. I need information regarding the following and I was hoping any of you can help me by supplying the correct answer. I really appreciate this.

1. How do Eskimo people say hi in Alaska? I vaguely remembered about spitting on your hand and put your hands together.. not sure if this is accurate.

2. I need an Eskimo name for a boy. Can I use Mikihasi (I made it up) as a boy name for an Eskimo boy?

3. I heard they catch fish in Alaska. What type of fish ? salmon? I need 2 types of fish that they catch in Alaska.

Thank you so much for those who can help me. or if anybody can recommend a website about Eskimo culture, I really appreciate it.

Regards,

arleen

Erhm... I don't think any of us know anything about Inuit culture... just Damien Rice music...

Try Canada's National Inuit Organisation here (http://www.tapirisat.ca/)

arleen, delighted to hear from you... I think "Mikihasi" is a nice name but unfortunately not suitable for an eskimo boy. One of the most beautiful eskimo names is "Banjaxed". It means "Eskimo God"in some regions. This name would be perfect for your book.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

ah ok. I see.

Yes, I think Banjaxed would be a great name for a boy, but if you consider re-writing your story a little bit, you'll find that 'looly' is quite a popular namefor the eskimo girls. Similar to 'Banjaxed' in that it means 'eskimogoddess' in certain regions. In fact, it would be a great title for your book - 'Looly and the Eskimos', or, 'Looly, Queen of the Eskimos', or, Looly's Iglooly'

Happy writing.

Dear all,

Thanks for all the reply.

I'm so sorry that I was clearly at the wrong place, asking wrong questions to wrong people.

I guess being a Mom has made me oblivion of any kind of bands or music (except for my Beethoven for babies CD).

At least I get to make some of you laugh :) (even thought that wasn't my intention. I think it's a good by product :)

Wheels, thank you for the link. I'm looking at it right now and I will use their contact list to ask for help. Thank you so much.

Arleen

No problem Arleen... and as you found us, why not check out Damien Rice's music? His first album 'O' is available most places and your baby would love it!! smileys/smiley4.gif

Wheels,

OK. I will look for it next time I go to CD store (which is probably 2 years from now :) anyway. is it a rock and roll band? where is it most popular? in the US or europe?

I emailed the senior editor of the Inuit magazine that I found at the link you gave. hopefully he can help me.

Arleen,

if you want to hear Damien's stuff before you buy, just click on the mp3s section at the top of this page. Also check out the videos section as they are great live.

The music is... well... hard to explain... have a listen, I'm certain you'll love it. smileys/smiley4.gif

Banjaxed, I think it's called irritable bowel syndromesmileys/smiley5.gif. (Only joking). Hope you feel better soon.

first, i thought it was strange that why someone wanted to write a story
for her child about something she didn't know, then it could be a good
opportunity for her to learn something since she was reaching out to
find. nothing wrong with that.

secondly it was funny how she accidentally came here. it was funnier how you guys tried to help out.

thirdly, it shows Wheel is very good and fair hearted, also very deligent to promote Damien.

fourthly, Banjaxed coincidentally had discomfort along the thread, hope he feels better now.

i don't know why i have to reply this onesmileys/smiley5.gif

Just been thinking about Banjaxed's pain in the pit of his stomach, I don't think it's irritable bowel after all. I think it may be something to do with his heart... has he made a special connection with Arlene perhapssmileys/smiley2.gif! What do you guys think?
