Yes Rue! Glen was pretty adorable and excited when he gave his speech.
It looked as tho he didn't know what to do with his excitement ...
it was bigger than his suuuper tall body!!! ;)

His reaction when the award was announced was sooo cute as well!!!!! :hello2: :hello2:

Ps.. he-e the igloo pretty much just collapsed for me... its all back to normal but it was not so good for my freak out ;)

Thanks to the wonderful Frames board (which had over 400 people on it at one point!!), here are the acceptance speeches:

Glen Hansard:
Thanks! This is amazing. What are we doing here? This is mad. We made this film two years ago. We shot on two Handycams. It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand. We never thought we would come into a room like this and be in front of you people. It's been an amazing thing. Thanks for taking this film seriously, all of you. It means a lot to us. Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all the people who've helped us, they know who they are, we don't need to say them. This is amazing. Make art. Make art. Thanks.

Marketa Irglova:
Hi everyone. I just want to thank you so much. This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we're standing here tonight, the fact that we're able to hold this, it's just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it's possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don't give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are. And so thank you so much, who helped us along way. Thank you.

What a perfect anti-dote to all of the drama kings and queens of Hollywood.

Thanks Shar for posting the speech. I hope they put it on youtube.

No problem! I'm so excited for them :D

Just give it a few hours ;) I bet it'll be up by the time everyone wakes up tomorrow.

srahman24 02-25-2008 03:48 AM

From the Carpetbagger blog at the New York Times.

Glen: “I just got a text from Bono. That is the biggest thing in the world that can happen to an Irishman.”

Rue Saint-Denis 02-25-2008 03:54 AM

Overall, I'd say I liked this Academy Awards. I'm going to head to the theatre on wednesday to see No country for Old Men, since it got so much recognition.

mariaoran 02-25-2008 04:02 AM

Turn to E! they're doing a post-Oscars show and showing some highlights from the show. Maybe some Glen and Mar in a bit???!!! :)

Also there's also some vids already up, like Marion's speech so it shouldn't be long!!!!!!!

edit: Videos up on the "Once" thread!

Couldn't watch online, so just catching up!! So happy>shocked at Once winning best song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And wow at the presenter bringing Marketa back to finish her speech... has it ever happened before????? usually it's the other way around, they kick you out as soon as possible...

Great that Bardem won!! and he gave a very very patriotic speech ;) And why wasn't Penelope Cruz sitting with him????

The oscars for actresses really surprised me. Happy for Tilda Swinton, love her since she did Orlando. And i was rooting for Julie Christie, will have to check this La Vie en Rose movie now!!

mark. 02-25-2008 11:22 AM

cille 02-25-2008 01:14 PM

Couldn't watch it last night either, but managed to stay spoiler-free and watched over pancake brunch - and brok into tears and got sweaty palms from the moment Glen and Marketa started singing - and all through their two acceptance speeches too, felt like my friends had won or something.. Go team! So nice that Marketa got to do her speech, it was the best speech by far!

Good show, Jon Stewart did a good job.

(oops! posted this post logged in as the boyfriend first)

Hendrik 02-25-2008 03:29 PM

Fair play to Mick Hucknall for winning his first oscar...

Felt so inspired by Marketa's speech! Definitely the best acceptance speech for the night, maybe ever. :smiley32:

So happy for Diablo Cody too

viv 02-25-2008 03:49 PM

I really liked that the audience really seemed to love Once. When Colin Farrell was introducing the song, everyone started cheering! And Daniel Day-Lewis seemed to say something to Glen as he made his way to the stage to accept the award and he (DDL) seemed quite pleased that they won.

Cali 02-25-2008 04:39 PM

marketa was probably the youngest winner and she gave the best speech

is the press conference anywhere online?

hazey 02-25-2008 05:16 PM

Poor Cate Blanchett, last night must've sucked twice as hard for her; nominated in two categories, awarded in zero.

Hendrik, why so serious? All the Simply Red jokes in the world can't save TWBB losing out to NCFOM.

srahman24 02-25-2008 06:24 PM

Cali, I haven't seen any video of it yet online - and they weren't on yesterday night during the post-show stuff on TV.

But this was released from the press room:

Quote:

Glen and Marketa on song at Oscars

Former buskers Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova are thrilled with their Oscar win for Best Original Song.

"When we were kids, we used to watch the Oscars every year and talked about what people were wearing," Glen said following the win. "It's amazing to be here tonight."

Marketa and Glen won the gong for their song Falling Slowly from hit indie movie Once which they performed at the Academy ceremony.

"There's things you have to do," said Glen, referring to the performance. "You have to keep going. If you think about the size of it and if you get swept up in it, you're gone."

Glen and Marketa beat off three separate challenges from the movie Enchanted to win the statuette.

"My mother was sitting beside me and she was just so nervous - she's been so nervous since we were nominated," said Glen. "I was just welling up."

"These days films are being made for different reasons like money, and art is being compromised," added Marketa. "I think people feel this film was done from a very pure point and an artistic one. I also think it's a story of love and we can all connect with that."
And there was a great interview with Glen on RTE's Morning Show, which has been archived online.

And there's more up here:

Quote:

Hansard speaks about Oscar victory

Glen Hansard has been speaking to RTÉ about his success at the Oscars. Listen to the interview here.

Hansard and partner Markéta Irglová won the Best Original Song Oscar for 'Falling Slowly' from the film 'Once', in which they starred.

Speaking from a post-Oscars party to 'Morning Ireland' presenter John Murray, Hansard said: "I kind of feel a bit like a plumber at a flower show over here. I kind of feel like we're totally outside of all this but at the same time I'm kind of just trying to accept that it all happened. It's been an incredible ride this whole thing."

When asked if his win had sunk in, he said: "It's kind of sunk in so much that I've been walking around with this heavy thing all night. What was really amazing for me was getting texts from family and friends, it was amazing beforehand, and then I got a text from Bono and I was like 'Ah, my God, that's just amazing.' For me it was just like getting a text off the King of the Tribe."

Of his Oscars speech, Hansard said: "I don't know what I said, I can't remember a thing about it, to be honest - it was all such a blur. And I forgot to thank John Carney ['Once' director], which totally wrecked my head afterwards." For more on his Oscars speech, click here.

Asked about his future plans, Hansard said: "I'm looking forward to just taking a break, going home. I'm looking forward to having a few pints with my friends and celebrating this thing... putting the golden man on a bar and having a night out."

He continued: "We'll probably do a bit of a tour over here in America in the next couple of months. I'd like to think we'll play a few gigs in Ireland... but basically getting back to music. I mean, acting's not really my thing."

"The biggest thing for me tonight was meeting Daniel Day-Lewis. He was the only guy I wanted to meet. He was really gracious enough to come up and congratulate us, it was a wonderful night," said Hansard.

The singer also spoke about meeting the Coen brothers ("I'm just such a fan of all their films - in particular 'The Big Lebowksi' - it was great to get together with them"), George Clooney ("a really nice guy"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("a king"), Viggo Mortensen ("really, really sweet to us") and Matthew Perry ("a super guy").

Of the Oscar success of 'Once', he added: "It's like when you get off a roller coaster and you're dizzy for a few hours. Well, this whole experience has been two years of a roller coaster for us. I guess it's going to take us a few months to come down off it and I'm just looking forward to the quiet time after all of this."
People are definitely saying that they had some of the best moments, and speeches of the night!

I think it probably doesn't hurt so bad to lose when you've won the award previously(and recently). Plus if she plays her cards right she might still be able to secure a nomination for the Hazey awards in july.(first prize is a tattoo of Margarat Thatcher and a snow globe depicting the town of Kaupang, Norway.)

TVguide article: After the Oscars: Top 10 Press-room Moments

1) And (drumroll), the No. 1 best moment is all about keepin' it real. It's cheesy, but this is Oscars night, after all. Following an evening of self-aware schmaltz, glamour and celebrity, best-song winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova reminded us all what it's really about: purity, authenticity and art. Hansard spoke to why they thought Once did so well:

"Someone made this awful comment along the way [we make films]," he said, "that individuals are intelligent but people are stupid, so you can take the piss out of them, the masses will go for anything. If you believe that, there's no hope for the world. The intention is everything, it's not about making money, it's about making something real."

There's finally some post-award video up on ABC's website (it should be viewable internationally):

It's a bit of a pain but using firefox - right click - view page info - media - then scroll down until you find the cached image and hit save as. I just uploaded them to my photobucket folder after that.
