uplifting music

Too much Damien, Ray (LaMontagne) and Nick (Drake) has been dragging me down lately... I'm looking for some uplifting tunes, preferably meaningful and clever & non-religious.
Any suggestions?

Oh man, that is like the hardest question ever for someone who finds depressing music uplifting...

Lisa's music is generally uplifting, right?

Hmm.. some Regina Spektor perhaps? I particularly dig her older stuff, her lyrics are quite clever and funny.

I also always enjoy me some The Band when I need something uplifting.

And how about Father John Misty? He's clever, but maybe not 100% happy.

Paul Simon works for me too, especially the classic Graceland album.

Ben Lee's album "Catch My Disease" is also quite uplifting and lovely.

Hope you can use any of that.

Thanks Cille! That's helpful.

Hehe :)
usually I'm just like that. But sometimes there's this one line that really speaks to you, grabs you, and gets you in a downwards spiral. Hard to explain, and very addictive. I guess some of you know the feeling...

Yeah, some of Lisa's songs are quite uplifting. I actually have a playlist to cheer me up that starts with Glen's 'Song of good hope' and ends with Lisa's 'knots'. (And has Vyv's 'happy thoughts' somewhere in the middle) :)

Will check out Ben Lee first!

Cool!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I just recieved Damien Jurado's new album yesterday, put it on...and it made me cry and cry and cry...didn't really need that :icon_scra

carrroline 01-22-2014 11:38 AM

I hate and love it when that happens ;)
But for now noted: avoid Damien Jurado's new album!

Well...as a huge Jurado fan, those are not 5 words I like to see in the same sentence. And it really is quite lovely. But yeah...

carrroline 01-22-2014 06:35 PM

:D hehe sorry...

And... I like Ben Lee :)
'catch my disease' is very lively, and it's working already.

cille 01-23-2014 07:01 AM

Yeah ben Lee is quite lovely, although his songwriting nopwadays seems a little lazy to me and he has gone a little too newagey hippie religious for me lately. Just look at the pics from his wedding with Ione Skye:

Apparently Josh radnor attended the wedding and wrote about it

carrroline 01-23-2014 07:24 AM

Oh nooooo... that totally spoils it. :)
Back to jack johnson it is... Although he can be quite annoying too.

Father John Misty is great, and at least he doesn't get me down. Maybe that should be the new goal... Not totally depressive ;)

cille 01-23-2014 07:34 AM

I don't think Ben Lee's hippieness ruins "Catch my disease", it was before he started semi-preaching. It's a breakup album (after he and Claire Danes broke up) but with a lot of hopefullness in there.

Yeah, 'not totally depressed' seems like the state to aim for for now :)

carrroline 01-23-2014 07:52 AM

True. You're right. And I do like hippies, you know.

cille 01-23-2014 08:22 AM

Yeah, me too. I sometimes use the term 'F u c k ing hippies' for fun, but then I am myself the biggest tree-hugging, peace-loving hippie I know.

eva_arg 01-24-2014 11:18 AM

probably not the most meaningful lyrics in history, but I love this version :)

carrroline 01-24-2014 02:11 PM

thanks Eva, I love it! :)

carrroline 02-18-2014 06:47 PM

I always forget about this one...
