Vyv is back?

This forum section needs a kick start since that hacker wiped out 6 months of posts... and since Vyvienne played with Lisa on Friday (and Saturday??) I thought I'd post.

She was in great form in Cork at least. Played cello and even piano! Didn't get to talk to her and find out what her plans are for the next few months though... or where she's been hiding...

Daniel 12-14-2008 10:35 PM

The moment was wasted on Friday night when someone shouted a compliment out, or was it I love you (its wasn't you wheels? ;)) to Lisa (just after she introduced Vyvienne), Lisa replied "Random Man".
...on a Motorway should have followed really.

Wheels 12-14-2008 10:36 PM

No, wasnt' me who shouted... But yeah, I half expected Vyv to start playing it for the craic! :)

eva_arg 12-14-2008 10:50 PM

She got married in the autumn so presumably doing the whole marriage thing! My friend's dad did the music for her wedding.

She said she was gonna record an album at some point over the next year or so though when I saw her last August so hopefully that'll pop up at some point!

Rai 12-17-2008 04:16 PM

^NOOOOOOOO!

Either I drank too much, or my plans of marrying her are ruined! I'm devastated, have to get some more booze... :P

mariaoran 12-17-2008 04:19 PM

^In order to maintain your happiness... you drank too much :)

The Tall Guy and The Long Gal

On Feb 17th, Vyvienne and trio of violas and violins (but little or no violence) were guests on The Ryan Tubridy Radio Show. Click here, and check out the "Tuesday February 17th 2009" show. If you don't have the time to listen to Ryan's whole show, he's a nice guy and won't mind if you skip ahead to 34mins 40seconds.

April FooldayFM

What better way to herald the arrival of spring and the end of winter time than to get up extremely early (for a musician) and broadcast some Happy Thoughts to the nation? Thank you to The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show team for having us on (not like "You're havin' me on - it's April Fool's Day").

Rai 04-02-2009 09:27 PM

Weird and great as usual. :) Even if I can't stop thinking about this song whenever an antelope is mentioned in a musical context.

verenita 04-03-2009 04:14 AM

thank you so much, becci!

The Long option
Published Date: 16 April 2009

Vyvienne Long has invested everything - emotionally and financially - into her debut LP and can't wait to hear what you think. Alan Owens spoke to her before her Belltable date this Friday evening
MY FIRST reaction to hearing the song Happy Thoughts by Vyvienne Long is one of surprise - her delicate and quirky vocals mixing freely and naturally with her plucked cello, the song moving toward a soaring finish, drums caught betwixt, a bass line McCartney would relish filling out the latter part of the song.

I thought Long was merely a cello player in Damien Rice's band. How wrong I was.

In fairness to the Dublin-born, classically trained cellist, she laughs at this admission on my part.

"That's good," she laughs.

"I think that's good. I can put my "new" sticker on. I have been fairly low-profile up until now because I haven't been gigging a whole lot, I have averaged a few gigs a year because I have quite big band and it is a big operation organising gigs – but I think now is the time to get out."

As she gears up to "get out" – which transfers into a short, whistle-stop tour of the country, including a date in the Belltable this week – it seems a good bet that a lot more people are going to discover this quirky performer.

Like me, you may have heard Vyvienne before and not even realised it – be it on Today FM, where her innovative cover version of the White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army' wowed listeners, or perhaps it was through the recent Easi-Singles advert that Happy Thoughts wormed its way into your subconscious.

That uplifting song was originally intended as a secret track on Vyvienne's forthcoming debut album, 'Serenade for Caterpillars', but instead wound up on television, charming all that heard it. If Happy Thoughts – and 2006 EP Birdtalk – are anything to go by, Long's debut should be one to get very excited about.

"I haven't fixed a release date, but it is almost ready and I am just waiting to get the last bit of work on it done, and then I need to get going with artwork," explains Vyvienne of the album, which will feature everything from French horns to a boy soprano choir.

"I went all out and invested everything, emotionally and financially – it is the biggest project ever undertaken in my entire life. I can't wait to see what people think of it."

As Vyvienne takes her first dainty steps out into the light from behind Damien Rice's shadow, with whom she collaborated on albums 'O' and '9' and also toured all over the world with, one can't help but think of comparisons with Lisa Hannigan, who also emerged from within Rice's cadre to huge fanfare.

On this point she says simply and with tongue lodged firmly in cheek: "I think we are each quite different and that is really good. I suppose you could say our personalities are quite different, and musically we are quite different – and equally brilliant."

Joking aside, it seems her time with Rice et all has left her prepared for the road ahead.

"I think it has definitely inspired me, because it was a world I wasn't involved in up until then. I suppose I am going into this knowing all the work involved, but I can't say that I wouldn't have found this path if I had remained in classical music."

borneoman 04-16-2009 03:13 PM

so it looks like her album will be called Serenade for Caterpillars!!!!!!

Found some info on a new charity gig!

Who: The Nighthawks People are putting on a very special show.

What for: in aid of Concern

Where: the Project Arts Centre 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

When: October 27th 8-10:30pm

How much: 17.50 euro (15 euro concession) call (01) 881 9613, or by going to this link

What/Who: All these fine people have given their time free-of-charge.

Vyvienne Long first came to prominence a few years ago as the cellist in Damien Rice’s band. Then, in 2006, Vyvienne released her wonderful debut EP, entitled Birdtalk, and it quickly became obvious that she was a hugely talented singer-songwriter in her own right. Vyvienne is also a wonderful live performer, and, not surprisingly, she has sold out venues all over Ireland. Vyvienne is currently putting the finishing touches to her debut album, and her recent single ‘Happy Thoughts’ has enjoyed extensive radio play (and, yes, it’s used in that TV advert too!)...

There's a teeny tiny bit about it on the IrishTimes website too.

I'm not quite sure how all of those people will fit into a 2.5 hour show, but it sounds like it'd be a cool night.

RonjaGirl 10-24-2009 06:46 PM

^Anyone going?
