Sweet Home Chicago

Who is headed back to the Atheneum this Friday?

mandarific 11-10-2014 05:19 PM

That would be me! Would be nice if it didn't rain this time, but I won't be getting my hopes up. Would have liked to switch to a different seat if someone abandoned their tickets/got a refund/etc, but the theatre never got back to me. Our seats weren't bad last time, though!

Also just got tickets for Glen in Milwaukee on Valentine's Day, FWIW.

Shillelagh 11-10-2014 05:48 PM

Me too!!! Pabst is such a great venue

borneoman 11-10-2014 06:09 PM

is he also gonna do the radio show with people that he was supposed to do but cancelled? (cannot remember the name now)

Wooohooo!!! I'm a bit bummed we weren't able to get closer seats (someone was buying for me and did it online not over the phone) but on the other hand...this will be our fourth time seeing Glen and the last time I was literally touching the stage and about got whacked by Rob's guitar...so I think we'll be okay in the mezzanine ;)

XRT. Doesn't sound like it. We've emailed them a bunch. And Damien's help email. No response. They had said that day that if he reschedules they would call us to come back but they were massive jerks too so I kinda doubt they give a crap. JAM has been dogshït throughly this whole thing. If it hadn't been for Damien specifically saying to move it back to the Athenaeum a lot of people would've been really screwed.

I think I got row J on the right. I've seen Glen loads and been up there too. It's great but there's really not a bad spot in the house. I'm just glad I got an aisle.

823freckles 11-11-2014 12:44 AM

I'll be there on Friday to see Damien!

melodie 11-11-2014 02:00 PM

bluebeagle 11-12-2014 01:07 PM

I'll be there! So excited, Friday couldn't come fast enough!

mandarific 11-14-2014 05:18 PM

Did anyone try parking near the venue last time? We're planning on doing that tonight (last time we parked outside the city and took the L in) so I was curious if anyone had any experience with the parking situation. :)

verenita 11-14-2014 05:30 PM

enjoy. it'll be special!

conanemily 11-14-2014 05:46 PM

I think it will be special too! :) look forward to your reviews.

Shillelagh 11-14-2014 07:31 PM

I parked next to the Diag. Bar just south of the venue. I was fine.

DesoleInBoston 11-14-2014 09:36 PM

Have fun tonight guys! Ask for Camarillas!!!!

signalfire 11-14-2014 09:37 PM

Have an amazing time with round two, everyone!

Shillelagh 11-14-2014 10:02 PM

Just picked up the tickets. Damo was doing sound check I got to hear takes a lot to know a man, the box, toffee pop, elephant and volcano.

eva_arg 11-14-2014 10:31 PM

ooh how great if he plays It Takes a lot...

bluebeagle 11-14-2014 10:35 PM

I took the train last time as well, but I'm driving today. I'll be heading there soon so I hope to find parking too. So excited! The day is finally here!

mandarific 11-14-2014 10:41 PM

We're on our way in! Went through Milwaukee instead of Rockford / Schaumburg this time, but looks like we'll be okay to make it on time. Google seems to think we're about to hit a lot of traffic but we're at least already in Illinois, sooooo.

I'll be in all purple again with glasses and a half my hair shaved with a thor-esque dude if anyone sees us and wants to say hi! :)

(Also I'm kind of jealous I missed the sound check!)

soChildish 11-14-2014 11:23 PM

On my way too, would absolutely love to hear Toffee Pop!!

InspirationDestination 11-14-2014 11:29 PM

Would be great if you get Toffee Pop and It Takes A Lot! I hope he plays all the new ones! Have a great time!

RenataAQP 11-14-2014 11:54 PM

soChildish 11-15-2014 12:32 AM

;( no piano tonight

Excited though!!

mandarific 11-15-2014 12:33 AM

In our seats up in section 8! Don't see a piano tonight, which is kind of a bummer, but I bet the show will be awesome regardless. Very different / less gloomy lighting tonight too ;)

Dunno how much I'll post, but my instagram is also mandarific for pics!

LOL great minds post at the same time? ;)

Anyone else just catch that the first song on the "radio" before the show was "Feelin' Good?" the box office guy even told us he was feeling good too, ha :)

dawno 11-15-2014 01:16 AM

Have a great time! Can't wait to see pix and read about the show!

bluebeagle 11-15-2014 03:02 AM

Anyone waiting around to meet him after the show?

soChildish 11-15-2014 03:09 AM

Well that was absolutely amazing!

He did "The Bottom Shelf" and some outros I wasn't familiar with after "Amie" and "Accidental"

Not in order (trying to piece it back together)

9 Crimes
My Favourite Faded Fantasy
Coconut Skins
Accidental Babies / ??? ("I can make it easier on you")
Elephant
Woman Like A Man
I Don't Want To Change You
Colour Me In
Amie / Sex Change (?)
I Remember
Volcano

The Box
Bottom Shelf
Rootless Tree
The Blower's Daughter
Trusty & True

We're out by the stage door but there aren't a while lot of other people. Gonna stick it out a little bit and see?

Edit: there's maybe a dozen folks out here!

Circa1992 11-15-2014 04:34 AM

Interesting...he didn't play The Greatest Bastard. Looks like a great setlist though. :)

Short video I took of the end of Volcano (which closed the end of the main set):

Longer notes later as we're currently on the way home, but he did say he'd be back in April / touring "before summer" and I got a hug :) Great show, back soon to review.

Shillelagh 11-15-2014 05:03 AM

And. I'm hammered.
Fücking. Great show.

soChildish 11-15-2014 05:04 AM

Heres some crappy recordings I took on my camera. I was in the front row so I tried not to take pictures/audio as much as possible. Hoping someone recorded the whole show. Totally amazing. I seriously dont know if I've ever heard anyone sing with so much passion before.

Accidental Babies "Outro" (clip) (I think this is a cover?)

Amie "Outro" (clip) (Google says it's a song called "Sex Change"?)

The Bottom Shelf (full)

InspirationDestination 11-15-2014 05:33 AM

So excited that you got Bottom Shelf and Sex Change! I haven't listened to them in such a long time. The Accidental Babies Outro is a bit of the Truth is not Enough, I think. Thank you for sharing!

Looking forward to more reviews and videos! Can't wait for the hug story! Spring tour- woo hoo!

Circa1992 11-15-2014 05:35 AM

Love the pics! And YAY about the hug AND the upcoming shows in the spring!

tessalasset 11-15-2014 05:50 AM

Ooooh so he didn't end up playing It Takes A Lot...?

That set list looks rad. I'm SO excited for my brother to see him tomorrow. He's going to be blown away and he doesn't even know it.

mandarific 11-15-2014 05:58 AM

Okay, we're officially out of the city so I can take the time to type since I don't have to help navigate :) The show was AMAZING, completely blew me out of the water. The boyfriend and I both agreed we didn't miss the piano one bit even if it would have been nice.

In no particular order:

- He opened with the professor, which is one of our favorites, and you could tell right away he was in much better form than the last show! Held out that last note way longer than I ever think I've heard him sing it (in recordings from other shows, anyway, this was my first time seeing him live.)

- He played colour me in at some point and that just melted me. I am completely in love with that song.

- Bf and I were thrilled to hear coconut skins as it doesn't seem to come up live often that I've noticed and it's one of the songs we really shared, for lack of a better word, when we first started dating :)

- I always thought I wouldn't miss the "big" songs live (and I admit I was glad we didn't "waste" time on cannonball, though I do like that one) but blowers daughter had me nearly in tears. Boyfriend said: "that was the moment it really hit me like holy **** we're seeing damien rice!!"

- was so surprised by bottom shelf!! And sex change!!! AAAAHHHH!

- trusty and true might be my fav off the new album and was no less magical live. I got a full recording of it and the talk before it, will upload when I get home on wifi to not waste our data plan lol

No proper merch, just cds. Got a non-deluxe copy to keep in the car.

Stage door was... Weird. Very different than I've encountered before, largely I think because there was no line set up or anything, just a cluster of people... Most of whom seemed to have no idea that he didn't do autographs or photos, so when he did come out there was some awkward like... People sharing expectantly and him being like sooooo

Still, we all got to stand around and chat, one couple in particular talked a lot about God knows what, I chatted with him briefly about how Glen was coming back to play in Milwaukee in February. When his manager(?) looked ready to shuffle him off, a few people got handshakes and then I asked if I could give him a hug and he said if course :)

It was about 20 degrees outside so I don't blame him for wanting to get on his way, but every time I see an artist at the stage door I find myself wishing some people were more respectful for one reason or another. (Though I was super relieved no one asked about Lisa... Was kind of waiting for that to be honest)

I REALLY wanted to ask him wtf happened to mustard seed, but Mr and Mrs talkative made it difficult to interject so I tried to just stand around awkwardly and be polite :)

Also after the show someone did ask if he preferred beer or wine... Wine it is!

That's everything that comes to mind for now....I'm sure there will be something else along the line. Will link trusty video when it's up, looks like it recorded mostly not awfully
