Damien's music featured in upcoming Salma Hayek project!

I didn't see a news post about this, so I wanted to give you guys a heads up in case anyone wasn't aware... I'm reviving my old username because I just had to share this with somebody. :)

Salma Hayek recently screened an early version of her pet project, based on "the Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran, at Cannes. It is an animated film and looks gorgeous.

Anyway, I was reading an article about the project when one of the animators commented that "the music is also going to be great on this film. Gabriel Yared wrote the score and there are songs by Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Lisa Hannigan." Another animator commented that he animated to a rough track of one of Damien's songs and was looking forward to hearing the finished version.

Somebody also embedded (in the comments section of said article) an Arabic YouTube video about Hayek's project, and you can hear Damien singing in the opening seconds of the clip (which is what perked my ears to his involvement in the project in the first place!).

Find the article here

Hooray! :hello2:

Interesting... Damien and Lisa working on the same project :)

borneoman 05-25-2014 10:39 AM

oh nice! at least this will be properly released for sure (unlike The Dragon)

there is an interesting comment too:
I really want to see the finished film, especially because I haven't heard Damien's final mix for "On Children." I animated the whole thing to a rough track (which also sounded great).

^suggests Damo has done a song called On Children...

Hannah25 05-25-2014 02:27 PM

From this link it looks like Lisa and Glen did the music for 'On Love' together. Would suggest that there's a Lisa/Glen duet and a separate Damien song to go with 'On Children'. Exciting news, regardless! :hello2:

Glo just sent me the link to the trailer (the movie is out this summer in the US) and it includes a Damo song:

I did some research and I think that this is not a new Damo song, at least not the lyrics. What Damien has done is put music to this poem called On Children, by Kahlil Gibran, who is the author of the book that has inspired the movie

this is the poem:
On Children
Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

if you noticed, the part he sings in the trailer is the last bit, the "Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness" part

The latest trailer has been uploaded and features a duet with Glen and Lisa. Damien is listed with them at the end of the trailer:

Also, it appears that the full movie has been uploaded to YouTube?? Literally saw that just now so I haven't checked it out yet...

borneoman 05-02-2015 03:47 PM

That song sounds gorgeous. Can't wait to hear the full version.

Glen & Lisa´s song is also based on this poem On Love, so again, like Damien, they added music but the lyrics are this poem:

Damien Contributes Two Songs for New Animated Film Kahlil Gibran’s ‘The Prophet’

Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet was produced and spearheaded by Salma Hayek-Pinault and is based on the classic, internationally acclaimed and best-selling book by celebrated Lebanese author, Kahlil Gibran.

Damien is contributing two recordings to the film’s soundtrack including the original song “Hypnosis” composed specifically for the project. The Prophet soundtrack will be released July 31.

Listen to “Hypnosis” here.
there´s another song then, must be the poem, as this one is an original song :D

carrroline 06-12-2015 04:44 PM

Oh wow, i love his vocals in this one!

Thanks, Vere!

eva_arg 06-12-2015 04:45 PM

Nice song. Thanks for posting, Vere!!

glo32 06-12-2015 05:16 PM

Yes the one base on the poem is On Children - this one looks like written for the film.
Great!

borneoman 06-12-2015 08:24 PM

How is it?? (Cannot listen at the mo)

Lyrics??

melodie 06-12-2015 11:33 PM

quick transcription of the lyrics, some parts missing:

When you know who you are
And can see through your veil
Your old fears become wind in your sail
Then your heart (??) unfurled
From the hypnosis of your world

When you know who you are
The darkness, the light
Love loves it all
‘Cause love has no fight
What has passed is a dream
What is not here is not what it seems

So pull yourself together now (x2)

When you know who you are
And have nothing to hide
Love’s at your feet
The hands at your side (?)
When your ears are your words
The silence can always be heard

When you know who you are
You can’t help but let go
You know no-one’s right
You know you don’t know
The paradox becomes less absurd
As your hypnosis unwhirls (?)

So pull yourself together now (x2)

What’s the matter with…
What’s the matter with…
What’s the matter with you?
Did it crush, did it shatter?
Did it break or did it scatter?
Did it tear your little heart in two?

What’s done is over
If you want something new

Just pull yourself together now (repeated)

All I have is all I need
And all I need is here now

glo32 06-13-2015 12:07 AM

^ thanks!

I think it's
"love's at your feet
and a hand's at your side"

borneoman 06-13-2015 07:59 AM

not my fav Damo song, at least on first listening, disappointed...

daavo 06-13-2015 03:09 PM

It's so unlike a Damien song that I can't help but feel that I only 'like' it because it's him and his voice. Anyone else and I wouldn't give it a second listen tbh.

It does sound better though if you close your eyes and imagine it playing over the credits at the end of an animated film - which I guess is its exact purpose!

I'm sure that 'On Children' will be much better :smiley1:

borneoman 06-13-2015 04:03 PM

sounds a bit like Under the Tongue and those songs he did with Melanie... as in, not very inspired :)

carrroline 06-13-2015 04:33 PM

I like these lines
Quote:

When you know who you are
And can see through your veil
Your old fears become wind in your sail
It might not be as intense as some of his other songs, but I like the vibe.

Was this better than The Auld Triangle, Marti? I know how much you like that song.

mikerennie 06-13-2015 05:54 PM

Unsure how I feel about this song at the moment.

Here is a download link for anyone that wants it.

Circa1992 06-13-2015 07:12 PM

I like the lyrics, and of course, I love his voice...but I think I'd like the song better if it was just Damien and his guitar.

acquadigio 06-13-2015 08:02 PM

Actually I find the trumpet fits in pretty well. I've got comfortable feeling listening to the song so I like it, but I also love "Uncomfortable" which brings me uncomfortable feeling so I don't know exactly what my taste is :D

eva_arg 06-13-2015 08:24 PM

I find I'm being drawn to it as the song progresses. Maybe when it starts is not getting my attention but asround halfway there it wins and I end up loving it.

a trivial thing: I can't find the tweet now, but someone commented on how the drawing of the guy in the artwork is wearing Damien's clothes and I just find it very amussing :D

Does anyone know if the Glen/Lisa duet has been released as well? Really interested in that one....
