... I barely recently started listening to Regina Spektor and have fallen in luv with her!! :) ... especially her live performances!!! she sounds really good and so funny :)

So was wondering what you lovely eskimos thought about her??? And if any of you love her and have any suggestions on what songs to look for and such, it'd be muchly appreciated!

I adore Regina Spektor. I saw her live last year and she is just as charming and bubbly on stage as she is during her songs. :)

cille 11-13-2007 07:13 AM

she's a brilliant songwriter. I don't like her latest album so much, but songs and soviet kitsch are great albums. SO many brilliant songs in there. I love playing and singing Samson and learning from how she built up the song.

mariaoran 11-13-2007 01:18 PM

ooh great thanks Cille !! :) ... i am liking samson as well and i think the songs i like right now are mostly from soviet Kitsch...

Also, anyone know russian? or knows what she says on that last part of Apres Moi?? ... it sounds really good in Russian but i would want to know what it means... :)

Kilombo 11-13-2007 01:42 PM

Oh, I only have Begin To Hope but from what you say I definitely should try the older ones!! I already love the new one, can't wait to discover even better songs by her :)
Thanks for reminding me of that, lately so many people gave me advice on good music that I got kind of overdosed so I didn't have time to investigate some stuff that I really liked.. Regina surely is one of them!
And thanks for the vids, she has such an interesting aura around her, can't really say what it is (what she does with her eyes and eyebrows just makes me want to hug my monitor)..

Greets,
Kil

PS.: Cille, you cover Samson?! I would kill to hear that :)

I prefer the earlier, officially unreleased, albums 11:11 and Songs. Both Soviet Kitsch and Begin To Hope are somewhat overproduced, especially the last album. Regina is best when it's just her and the piano. It also gives more room to her vocal abilities and improvs. Samson is an old song from the Songs album and it sounds much better in its original version.

cille 11-13-2007 04:15 PM

I can't see how Soviet Kitsch should be over produced?

Cali 11-13-2007 06:29 PM

i tried to like Soviet Kitsch, i really did, i bought the album and i listened to it constantly for a couple of weeks hoping that i would eventually find it enjoyable, never happened, i hated it so much, it ended up on ebay. those things can't be forced i guess

Granted, in comparison to the simplicity and rawness of the first two albums everything that came after sounds "overproduced". SK is quite lovely most of the time (the quieter songs where the instruments don't drown out her voice), but it never quite manages to flow. There's that unnecessary whispers + crazy song intermezzo that just doesn't fit with the rest of the album and seems to be there just for the heck of it. Like Cali, I actually used to hate the album in the beginning, but have grown to appreciate it. And it's still heaps better than BTH where things really start to go wrong.

I love Regina, but I haven't seen her live yet. I started listening to "Begin To Hope", I haven't really listen to the other CD's yet, but I'll bet their are great too.
Mariaoran, I love the songs that you can't stopp listening to... :hello2:
If you want to listen to other songs of her you can take a look on her internet side...http://www.reginaspektor.com/index2.html
There is a media player where you can listen to all her CD's I think...
Does anyone know more of her unreleased songs like Baby Jesus? I'd love to her them! :hello:

mariaoran 11-13-2007 09:28 PM

I bought the last album before ever hearing anything on the previous ones and I really like it. I can see why some might think that a few of the songs on Begin to Hope are over produced but I still enjoy the sound. I think variation is good.
I guess what i'm saying is, give it a try!

I LOVE Samson so i'm looking forward to hearing the version on Songs since people seem to think it's better. I looked on Amazon and Songs was like $20 used, which seems a little steep, but I really want to hear Samson! :smiley6:

mariaoran 11-16-2007 07:14 PM

^Thanks viv, yeah i'm going to go for SK before i get the new one tho ... but i'm sure i'll end up buying all of them! :)

You can listen to the album version on the website Ronja posted!!!! ... it veeeery good! :smiley10:

...oh and viv Here's the official video for the song, it has a slightly different version of it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p62rfWxs6a8

mariaoran 11-17-2007 12:31 AM

I dunno if anybody is interested but i was browsing the net and found that the russian part of 'Apres Moi' is actually a poem by Boris Leonidovich and it goes something like this...

{original in Russian...}
Fevrale dostat chernil i plakat,
Pisat O Fevrale navsnryd,
Poka grohochushaya slyakot
Vesnoyu charnoyu gorit.

{Translation i found! :S dunno if its any good...Sounds very beautiful anyways .... :) }
February, take out the inks and weep,
Write about February on my moans,
But right now, thundering sleet,
In the black Spring it burns...
