Hi all... I'm new so I apologize if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything whenI searched....
In the song Eskimo, Doreen Curran sings the beautiful finnish verse, and I'm wondering if I might find the lyrics anywhere? I noticed they were not included on the lyrics page here.

Thanks!

now emmett theres a challenge for ya!!

administrator 07-29-2003 08:49 AM

wellllllllllllllllll... i've had two finnish people try to transcribe them but they were unable to, apparently it's a little indistinct. might be easier with the recording of damien singing it solo on the mp3 page if any finnish people want to give it a go. (and wheels i know you're not finnish so don't even try...)

bumblebee 07-29-2003 11:22 AM

I do have a Finnish friend who I'm sure would be willing to translate written lyrics for me....but she's not familiar with the song (I'm working on that!) and yes, they are difficult to decipher. I'll head over to the mp3 page & see if the solo recording is easier.

Thanks all! I'll let you know if I find anything out.

My finnish friend responded back! She's on the road travelling right now but will take a listen to the mp3s I sent her & will work on it when she returns in a couple days....

She said that lately she's surprised by all the random finnish popping up in movies and songs from other countries.. LOL

bumblebee 07-31-2003 09:49 PM

Ok, folks....I'm going to copy and paste the reponse from my friend in Finland. Btw, she LOVES the song and I've pointed her in the direction of finding out more about Damien's music. She listened to the mp3 version of Eskimo where Damien sings the finnish solo. Here was her input:

Ready for it Bee?

First I have to ask who is Damien Rice and why I haven't heard of him before! What a lovely song. I'm really picky when it comes to music, but this piece... Weepingly good. Touching.

Then bad news: his pronunciation is pretty bad (example:the word 'ystävä' he pronounces like 'ustava' - understandable of course if one tries to pronounce it like english) All the stuff he pronounced more or less correctly I got, but the rest are based on my guesses. Or maybe he got something grammatically wrong and therefore it doesn't really make sense. Do you have any idea why he used Finnish in this song? We don't have any eskimos, Damien.*giggle* Anyways, a good effort.
Some bits he actually pronounced pretty well - he just has problems with some vowelsounds like 'y', 'ä' and 'i' (it's not pronounced 'ei' but 'ee'). When I go back to Finland I can ask some of my friends to listen to it and see if they can fill in the gaps! I also want to find the album version to hear how it goes in that one...Well, that ends my Finnish lesson, on to the lyrics! Hope you have the encoding on "Western European" or something...you'll get a strange character!

in Finnish: .......in English:

Kosketa minua. . . . . . . . . .Touch me
Alla käsilläsi. . . . . . . . . . . 'under with your hands'*
Mua niin että. . . . . . . . . . .me so that
tunnen sinut. . . . . . . . . . . .I (or 'I will') feel you
Alla minua. . . . . . . . . . . . 'under me '**
alla käsilläsi. . . . . . . . . . . 'under with your hands'
Huuto sielussa. . . . . . . . . .A loud call*** in the soul
saa.... . . . . . . . . . . . . . .makes...****

Minä kaipaan. . . . . . . . . . I miss
eskimoystävää. . . . . . . . .an eskimo friend*****
Minä kaipaan. . . . . . . . . . I miss
eskimoystävää. . . . . . . . .an eskimo friend
Minä kaipaan. . . . . . . . . . I miss
eskimoystävääni. . . . . . . my eskimo friend

*'käsilläsi' means 'with your hands',so the word in front of that should be an adjective to make sense, like "touch me with your warm hands' or something. Or maybe he just sings 'lalaaa käsilläsi" which would make sense. I'll keep on searching what he might have meant with the 'alla' - I could have heard it wrong. 'Touch me with your hands' is the gist of it.

**again the 'alla'. 'minua' is a partitive form, so those two together don't make any sense - it would be like "under of a part of me" if I had to translate it somehow. I think he was trying to go for the equivalent of accusative 'me' and sometimes 'minua' is an accusative...but not here. So I think he is trying to say "under me" which would be 'minun alla/allani'

*** you can decide: 'huuto' can be translated as 'scream', 'yell', 'loud call', etc. Don't think he means 'yell'here, hehe... 'huuto' is almost any loud call/noise coming from a mouth - or in this case, soul

****I'm not sure if he says 'saa', it could be just humming something else, but it kinda would make sense if the following line was 'minut kaipaamaan..'. The whole thing would mean 'it makes me miss...'. Maybe he sings so the first time, and then moves onto 'minä kaipaan...', it was hard to tell. Very beautiful

***** Heh, translating is hard. Finnish doesn't have any definite or indefinite articles. So it could be 'the eskimofriend' or 'an eskimofriend'. But if he meant the former, he probably would have added some kind of a defining word in front of eskimo to make it 'the'. To me the latter possibility sounds better. It keeps an ambivalent mood to it, like it's anybody's eskimo friend, and only in the end the listener gets that defining word, 'my'. I don't know, for some reason I found this very moving.

I would like to hear your comments on these lyrics - and if my explanations are too, um, elaborate ( I don't want to use the wording 'screwed up'. ooops!) I'll try to put them in a more understandable form. I like this song very much, caught myself humming it when I walked around just now. Thanks for introducing him to me!

I found her input to be very helpful and insightful....
So there you go!

And she added this update, also:

======================================

Oh Bee Bee Bee Bee BEE!

I got the alla-thing! I think he might be singing 'halua' but just in a weird way!

'halua minua' would then be 'want me'
'halua kasillasi' would be 'want me with your hands'
It makes sense, yay!

Finnish is like the most f**ked up language in history...

Beautiful, but f**ked up

gothic flavor 08-15-2003 06:20 AM

I think the lyric goes 'Kosketaminua, älä käsilläsi vaan sielussasi... minä kaipaan eskimoystävääni.

Which would roughly be 'Touch me, not by your hands but by (or 'in', but it sounds a bit funny) your soul... i miss my eskimofriend.

Yeah, i'm finnnish, it's a bit hard to make out the lyrics but i think i got at least that part right. I'll work out the rest soon.

janedoe 08-15-2003 06:38 AM

Really class thanks guys, it brings the song to life!

gally45 08-15-2003 08:25 AM

Speaking of translations could anyone translate this for me

La fille danse
Quand elle joue avec moi
Et je pense que je l'aime des fois
Le silence, n'ose pas dis-donc
Quand on est ensemble
Mettre les mots
Sur la petite dodo

My french is not the best, merci beaucoup!, shane

FredDaNinjaPunk 08-15-2003 01:18 PM

the girl dances...when she plays with me and i think that i love the times of silence....one dares not to speak...when we are together...to put the words on the small sleep....(like put the words away dont speak)

i think so anyway..........i tried...what do the rest of you think??

daol20 08-15-2003 02:17 PM

Yeah, my French is a little rusty but it looks about right Lis! Its been sooo long since i've read or spoke French!

Sionna 08-15-2003 05:26 PM

I think "la petite dodo" is a kids bedtime story(called a 'beddy bye'),but I'm not the best at french. So I think the end is 'to put the words in the beddy-bye'.

LisaOBrien 08-16-2003 08:17 AM

yeah that's what i meant......nice one..so between us all the french words are done.....woo hoo.
