Just out of interest, what size/thickness of plectrum do people use when playing their acoustic guitar?

Jgrg1984 10-11-2004 05:21 PM

medium...always try heavy but i just dont like the feel

Donsie B! 10-11-2004 08:48 PM

i actually find plectrums mess up my stroke 'specially on tabs so i actaully dont use em..do any other eskimoes do likewise?

Miss Pink 10-11-2004 08:49 PM

plecs are the work of the devil

sarahukuk 10-11-2004 08:52 PM

ive only just started the guitar but im not too keen on plectrums but they make it louder then when im using my thumb, so i've made a nice plectrum bracelet out of the ones i got

Donsie B! 10-11-2004 08:54 PM

y didnt i think o' that?!

Jgrg1984 10-11-2004 09:24 PM

i am obsessed with fingerpicking and strumming with my thumb. most of the songs i have written do not involve pics, but there arecertain sounds that you cannot get unless you are using a pic...you know there are those moods when you want to be loud...

Tomarse 10-11-2004 10:55 PM

I don't usually use a pick but as Jgrg1984 pointed out, to get some sounds you have to use one. When I do use one though, I use the Hot Picks range. They're nice to use but really brittle so they have a habit of breaking. It's not all bad cos the pics on them are highly ammusing so it gives me an excuse to get some more. Jgrg1984 10-11-2004 11:05 PM

i know these hotpicks you speak of, although ive never used them. i actually have a bagfull of pics from a place called "perfect pieteh" (atleast thats what it looks like on the pic), that my girlfriend brought back for me on her last trip to ireland. so those and random free pics are the ones that i use when i do.

tomas 10-12-2004 12:43 AM

well, i used medium picks (0.73) but my guitar teacher suggested to try
out harder ones so i did and currently i am using 1.13 pick which feels
pretty good...and of course i am not playing just with a pick, there
are songs that just sound better played with thumb/fingers or
fingerpicked...

It could be "perfect pitch" is a music shop in dublin

Jgrg1984 10-12-2004 07:05 PM

that is it...the print on the pics are a bit blurry

dramaking 10-14-2004 11:14 AM

when I started to play the guitar I used mostly thin plecs, because they are easier to use. now I use most of the time 0,73 plecs. actually it depends what kind of song I play. some songs sounds better with thin, some better with hard ones!

p.s. sorry for my bad english, I'm from germany!

Enoch 10-14-2004 01:20 PM

Your english is fine DK, better than some of the "naturals" on here

Me, I use mediums, Jim Dunlop Tortex ones, yellow in colour. Simply nothing else will do! I fingerpick also andgo between plec and fingerstyle (normally when I drop the plec inside the guitar midsong ....)

hippy shakes 10-14-2004 03:39 PM

I'm a medium pick man at the moment. Practicing loads of lead work on the electric so I need to use it. trying to master John Squire type solos. Always use the fingers on my acoustic though. Gives a much better sound.

treefrog 10-16-2004 03:12 PM

i'm a fan of the dunlop 0.60 myself...only for strumming though, i use my fingers for the rest

philio 10-23-2004 06:33 PM

which ever one hasn't fallen into the plecrum black hole.

preferably a nylon jim dunlop .73

Livo 11-05-2004 04:59 PM

nylon jim dunlop .46mm for acoustic mostly. but stuff like the heavy
part of "i remember" i use a harder one, usually a nice paisley grover
allman medium one.

Donsie B! 11-05-2004 06:41 PM

i lost all my pics

reyvee61 11-05-2004 07:57 PM

I use Dunlap Jazz III, they're tiny and have absolutely no flex whatsoever, just like fingers, that's probably why I like them.....

Tess 11-05-2004 10:13 PM

im useless i loose them all, or just accidently drop it in2 the centre bit of the guitar (im not big on technical terms) if i get distracted by something shiney...

reyvee61 11-06-2004 06:35 AM

I always drop em too, thats why I rarely use them....

sirois71 11-07-2004 02:58 AM

There is a product called "Gorilla Snot" that does wonders for not dropping picks. Just a little between your thumb & index finger makes the pick stick where it's supposed to be. And I use the Dunlop Nylons, .73 & .88 mostly, besides my fingers. These picks are great for tone, DO NOT BREAK & will last until you lose them.

reyvee61 11-07-2004 07:16 AM

I've heard of that but I guess we can use our own too.

Petra 11-07-2004 08:41 AM

eeewwwwwwwww

reyvee61 11-07-2004 10:06 AM

I know....meee bad!

Petra 11-07-2004 10:14 AM

he he

i actually gave up using plectrums and tend to just use my fingers now - could never get the hand of the plectrum - i dont do a lot of strumming anyway!

damien4pres 11-07-2004 10:54 PM

I just finger-pick, it gives it a warmer sound

reyvee61 11-08-2004 03:19 AM

Finger picking is my preference too.....

Dr:J 11-13-2004 01:52 PM

I'm a picker aswell. I only own plects that i've caught mid-air in concerts, meaning one from James Hetfield and one from the singer of Ash :)
