it's not about putting a price on art. It's to avoid people profit without the artists getting royalties for their efforts. That's why "bootlegs" are always free. Once people start charging money for it, it is not only illegal, but also artists will soon enough no longer support taping.
You should always get a life recording for FREE. In your case it's probably best you just ask who's willing to send you one and offer to reimburse for postage, envelope & CD-R.
