I was pretty shocked the first time I heard it, too (but only had the opportunity to hear it one). It also struck me as very commercial.
There was a message about this on the official meesage board. I think it was from Damien. Here is what it said: Posted by damien on 2003-09-22 10:26:03pm just so you know, i don't like this new cannonball remix i had large arguements with the people i'm working with over the whole situation it was my choice at the end of the day, and in a situation where my head was wrecked with people asking for a remix of this and a remix of that, i just made a deal with them where they could put out this single, and NEVER EVER mention the word remix to me EVER again it's a long story and it had my head wrecked, to the point where i took it out on my hair as usual and shaved my head. the labels were getting all kinds of people to remix songs and i was just saying 'no' to everything they sent me. i got so tired of it i just wanted it to end, so i ended it by giving them something that they wanted and making a written agreement that they would never ask it of me again, to be done with it for good from my point of view i'm not bothered whether or not radio play the music we make. they didn't do it in ireland, and we did fine there, so i don't have any need for them to do it elsewhere. the management and the record labels are not artists, and think differently. they obviously like to sell as many records as possible. i understand where they come from, but don't agree. this is not a problem for me. in truth, i don't have to do anything i don't want. i allowed this cannonball remix go ahead because i wanted the subject to be closed, where everybody in the team felt somewhat happy about the situation. i am happy that the topic will never be raised again. it's a remix of the song by someone else. it's not my style. i don't like it. some of you may like it. others may not. f**k it. if you don't like it, ignore it. |

I'm not sure if this has been posted here, but has certainly appeared on the official board, but on the reverse of the singles there is a note from Damien as follows..... Please note the tracks 1 and 2 are not true representations of Cannonball the song on the album o. They are remixes. Please listen to the album to hear Cannonball. Thanks, Damien |

omg, i've heard that, it's pretty bad, it's WAY too fast, and the bass line ruins the song. about the remixed cannonball, its just as bad, if not wrose... |

WOW! That's horrible! To use the British expression, "pure sh*te." I'm amazed it hasn't already gotten heavy airplay in the U.S.

Not the same version as the one in the B&W video, is it? The "video version" is actually quite nice, wish there was a CD single of that. (Or maybe there is... This is America, we're the last to know...)

I like the CD single version of Volcano, besides that was Damo's own interpretation not some person or group of people who think they understand the song enough to re-interpret it. Would love to hear more of this remixed version of Cannonball, but from what I can hear they added that sweeping, dramatic symphony sound to make it come off all lovey-dovey/ melancholy and kinda cheesy.

i HATE the remix version of Cannonball thats being played all the time on radio 1. I know it's definitely not the Cannonball that I know and love. It has lost all emotion and tenderness, and when people say how much they like Damien Rice, I'm thinking "You don't even know the half of it!!!!!" hey, that's just my opinion. think I'll just take Damien's advice and ignore it.

I was thinking of that, too. It's kinda melodramatic. And doesn't have that passive energy (???) of Damien. It's faster, too, right? I've only heard it once, only cos I don't listen to radio. |

yeah, it is a lot faster, and because the drums are like synthesised, it all sounds so fake. also, heres a bit of music terminology!!, the ritardandos (when the music slows down) are completely lost, infact I dont even think they are used at all. the whole song seems such a rush from beginning to end, there's no passion related to the words that is shown through the music at all. its not damien's fault and there's nothing that can be done now. it just a shame that such atender song has been mauled by some big cheese in a sound studio who has no concept of beautiful music.Edited by: lonelilly_lil
