As introduced by Damo 2004-02-25, the previously untitled new song is "Rootless Tree." (Note, this is the song some people had decided to call "f**k You") To eliminate any possibility of confusion, I've attached my transcription of the lyrics from what is the known debut, 2003-12-08:

What I want from you
Is empty your head
But they say that you
Don't stay in your bed
We do
What we need to be free
And it leans on me
Like a rootless tree

What I want from this
Is to learn to let go
But we fade
??
Fracture the times
We were blind
When we needed to see
And it leans on me
Like a rootless...

So f**k you, f**k you, f**k you
And all that they ????
Im leaving, Im leaving, Im leaving
There's nothing in you I need
Hate me, hate me, hate me
??????
And you can let me out
Let me out, let me out, let me out
Hell when you're around
Let me out, let me out, let me out
Hell when you're around
Let me out, let me out, let me out

What I want from this
It to learn to let go
No not from you
From all that is old
Killers reinvent and believe
And it leans on me
Like a rootless...

So f**k you, f**k you, f**k you
And all that they ????
Im leaving, Im leaving, Im leaving
There's nothing in you I need
Hate me, hate me, hate me
??????
And you can let me out
Let me out, let me out, let me out
Hell when you're around
Let me out, let me out, let me out
Hell when you're around
Let me out, let me out, let me out Edited by: Mario

Ah well

Okay, I need to set something straight.

I don't know where the idea that the song was titled "????" came from. Thats what Pat and Ashley labelled the track, because we didn't know what it was called.

i hunted down the official name of the song and apparently its called '????', it was actually written down as that as the setlist but then maybe there was confusion what with marios setlist. theres a thread somewhere that i posted called new songs. though all these names seem fine im betting that its not any of these names its called im sure its not damos style. more than likely just called let me out. but lets go with rootless tree.

It's very possible Damien had yet to title it, hence the '????' on the setlist. Also, Damien is very uncertain on the whole setlist issue... saying he plays without them often and other ideas. The '????' could have had a personal significance to him when he was writing the setlist. Perhaps he was torn between playing some older song or this new one. The four question marks may signify something like this.

I don't know what thats about Neil, but this is the name. He says: "This is called Rootless Tree" and goes into the song.

I think that the lyrics that you're missing are due to some of the existing ones possibly being incorrect. I've listened tothose partsover and over with justthe vocal parts boosted and the backing instrumentation turned all the waydown and this (corrections are in caps)is what I believe they are:

The first part of the"what I want for you is to empty your head" verse is correct but then the second half of it is "what I want from US is to learn to let go/We fade theFORESTS and fracture theTIDES weGO blind when we needIT to see...

Chorus: SOF.U. 3xAND ALL THAT YOU DOI SAIDBLEED IT 3x There's nothing in youAND YOU CANhate me 3x hate me SO GOODTHAT you can let me out 2x let me outof hell when you're around etc.

One important difference that I'm percieving about the last verse is that the last two lines ofit are all one longsentence otherwise it doesn't make sense to me.This is what the lyrics are there:

"IKNOW notOF youBUT OFall that is old: killers reinvent and believe and it leans on me etc.

I think he's referring to himself as the (mercy)killer of this relationship which has gotten soold and tired and rottenthat it hasdied (which is why the tree is rootless).

There's one more thing I want to add/amend. I'm almost positive about half of the "let me out"s that he does are actually intermittentlyalternated with"let me UP"s which also make a wholelot of sense if he's feeling like he's being crushed under the weight of a fallen tree and is strugglingand (in typical Damo fashion)mustask/demand her helpbefore he cangetfree.

As for the title although I liked f**k YOU's directness. The metaphor of the rootlesstree goes all the way through almost all the song's lyrics and is therefore more fitting. As far as the confusion over the previous title being proper or not I look at it as the fact that it's a new song and the title probably wasn't decided on for sure (and who knows if it will stay this way either yet?)

Just a couple comments. First off, your interpretation is at least if not more valid than mine. When I said I know they are accurate, I was speaking much more generally than you are. That transcription was made back in December just to see if anyone could ID the song.

What show did you listen to? Those are what I got from the Brooklyn show, its possible he made minor changes if you're listening to a show from this current tour.

He often runs words together and slips into his Irish speech patterns, so the you's, I's, and uses are often interchangeable to my ears.

Thanks Mojo,

That was the best sounding version of Nine Crimes I've found. The other ones were too quiet and cut off 40 seconds before the end of the song...

Mario,

I got mine from Neil's briefcase (which if I remember the earliest thread about him posting he got from one of your shows so it's probably the same concert). As I said I'm not completely sureif my lyricsare right either.

In fact,I went back and listened and I'm now convinced unabashed is correct about "and all we've been through" rather than "and all that you do" (which isgreat because I honestly didn't think that was right because I thoughtthat wasa pretty weakline but I couldn't figure out what it might be and now it's much more in keeping with Damo's level of sophisticated lyricalgenius).

So now all I need is for somebody to tell me where to get an mp3 of Front Door...
