Great, more publicity for Lisa!

My tip would be Florence and the Machine, but I'm gonna go to the bookies and stick a tenner on Sea Sew

whoop! Go Lisa!

Not a bad list, and I doubt she'd have any worry from Kasabian (utter garbage).

Glad to see Bat for Lashes on there, but my money would probably be on Florence too.

From Lisa's myspace...

"!"

l can't transcribe the high pitched noise of excitement that I'm
involuntarily making right now, but "!" sums up my feelings best.
"Sea Sew" has just been nominated for a mercury music prize.
I really can't believe it. For myself, the lads in the band, Una,
Nurse Ben, all of the people who worked so hard to put this record out
and be heard, it's an incredible honour and unbelievable gift.

As I way saying... "!"

Now, to the bar, I'll explain on the way!

From the beeb

LISA HANNIGAN - SEA SEW

Released: 4 May, 2009
Highest chart position: n/a
Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan recorded her debut album in just two weeks - and spent almost as long hand-stitching the artwork that makes up the cover.

Many will know her from Damien Rice's albums O and 9, where her sweet, soulful voice provided a counterpoint to the rock singer's more strident vocals - most notably on the hit single 9 Crimes.

The pair's creative relationship ended in 2007, when Hannigan was sent home in the middle of a tour. "I had become pretty outspoken about my frustrations at the direction the band was going in, and I'm sure he was starting to find me a pain," she later said.

The success of her solo material has made up for the split - with invitations to appear on Jools Holland and the main stage at the Latitude festival.

Monthly music bible Q said of the record: "Sea Sew exudes the sort of simple, homespun charm that many strive to achieve but so few succeed in pulling off."

Florence & The Machine will probably win it. That's not a comment on the quality of Ms. Welch's album or any of the other nominees, it's just a feeling I've got based on the UK press and the Mercurys.

That Horrors album is shockingly good considering how horrendous their first album was.

from NME:

The nominations for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2009 were announced this morning (July 21) – and bookmakers William Hill have made Kasabian and Florence And The Machine the early favourites.

Both the acts have been given odds of 5/1, while Bat For Lashes, Glasvegas and La Roux all have odds of 6/1.

Lisa Hannigan, Speech Dabelle, The Horrors and Friendly Fires have longer odds, at 8/1 each to win, while The Invisible, Sweet Billy Pilgrim and Led Bib are outsiders at 10/1.

The winner will be announced on September 8.

The odds to win the Barclaycard Music Prize 2009, according to bookmakers William Hill, is:

Kasabian – 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum' 5/1
Florence And The Machine – 'Lungs' 5/1
Bat For Lashes – 'Two Suns' 6/1
Glasvegas – 'Glasvegas' 6/1
La Roux – 'La Roux' 6/1
Lisa Hannigan – 'Sea Sew' 8/1
Speech Debelle – 'Speech Therapy' 8/1
The Horrors – 'Primary Colours' 8/1
Friendly Fires – 'Friendly Fires' 8/1
The Invisible – 'The Invisible' 10/1
Sweet Billy Pilgrim – 'Twice Born Men' 10/1
Led Bib – 'Sensible Shoes' 10/1

I hope Lisa wins I like Bat for Lashes too Florence is growing on me... rather her than the horrible Kasabian!!

Here a short article from the irish times:

Quote:
Irish 'outsider' excited about prestige music nomination

“I’VE NEVER been so excited about anything before,” said Irish singer Lisa Hannigan just after being nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize – the annual award given to the best British or Irish music album of the year.

Hannigan (29), from Kilcoon, Co Meath, was nominated for her Sea Sew album and is on a shortlist of 12 for the Mercury Prize.

“To get the nomination is great” said Hannigan. “I’m already looking foward to the awards ceremony in September but realistically I know I am an outsider.”

During Mercury’s 17-year history, only a handful of Irish acts have been nominated (including U2 and Van Morrison). Hannigan’s nomination alone guarantees increased record sales and media exposure.

Hannigan first came to prominence as the vocalist with Kildare musician Damien Rice. She spent five years touring the world with Rice before going solo last year.

Sea Sew has sold 45,000 copies, including 15,000 in Ireland. She has been making inroads into the US with appearances on the Jay Leno and Steve Colbert chat shows.

Hannigan performed her Lille song at the announcement ceremony in London yesterday. She has been inundated with media requests since her nomination.

William Hill bookmakers have Hannigan at odds of 8/1 to win.

I think of the unlikely winners (as in the ones that haven't been getting a lot of coverage from the UK press this year) Lisa is the most likely winner if you get what I mean.

Of all the nominees that I've heard hers and The Horrors are the only records that I like. The Horrors winning it would provide a good narrative for the press to write about (risable first record, utterly derided by the press aside from the NME and dismissed as fashionista Camden douchbags and then they go off with Chris Cunningham and Geoff Barrow and come back with an excellent follow up) and the Mercury likes a good story to go with it's winners (Antony, Elbow).

For whatever reasons it normally goes one year on, one year off where they'll give it to an expected winner and then the next throw a spanner in the works and give it to an outsider.
