Overall, I do like the song- less for the overly familiar chords/strum pattern than for the lovely melody and powerful lyrics (is that a hat tip to GnR's magnificent "Catcher in the Rye" perchance?) As for Julia, i think she's actually got a lovely voice and think A) she's likely not even a professional singer but rather a fan or someone whom he met recently. He has a history of bringing unknown folks/fans etc up for a chance to sing with him like that. They're often understandably intimidated and nervous. B) The contrast was intentional. Let him get loud and emotional and let her be the opposite. I thought it was quite effective. Speaking of fans, I wonder what it was like for Damo meeting such a huge influence as Thom. Do you think the "10 Days to Barcelona" trip came up? I wonder if they'd ever duet on "BD2/Creep"...

Here are some photos from the performance that I took.
As is so often when Damien performs, the room was dead silent and I was in the second row. So not to be rude and to enjoy the performance, holstered my camera most of the song. Thus, the photos are not very dynamic. Basically I took two series of shots on continuous shooting, they were taken at the peak of the song while the crowd was clapping and just as he was finishing up the song. Please enjoy, but don't use without permission. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fightth...7623272085303/

-In terms of the movie, I'm still not sure what to make of it. Unlike a lot of documentaries, it does not have a well structured argument. It was more of an awareness raising film since it showsthe various points of views on the situation in Tibet. It displays the wide spectrum of various people/party's beliefs, but it left me without a great sense of direction or hope.
Visually the movie was stunning and it had a great score. On the down side, I felt that it was a bit too long and slightly unorganized. But then again, that's just my opinion. If you're looking to understand the full scope of the Tibet situation, this is not the answer. If you are looking for a fresh perspective on the situation from key players, this is definitely a must watch. -I didn't notice the Thom Yorke contribution. -As for the studio version of "what if i'm wrong," the movie only played about a minute and a half of the song about 80% of the way through the video. The beginning starts with some monks in the vein of cold water. I'd be curious to hear the whole song.

wow thanks for the pics, amazing spectacular!!!!!!!!!!!
and yep, I've heard/read in different places that the weakest point of the movie is the editing... which might still be fixed if the movie opens in theatres...

This song tells me that Damien lives musically.
He is so right to sing that "what if I am wrong" song.

any luck finding who that Julia is? The voice sounds very very much like Julia Stone (of Angus & Julia Stone), you know, a bit like too much helium but she's not blonde afaik
and Spamlet, I think it was just Damien there, no Thom Yorke...

Yes, this is true. Damien was the only musical artist invited to perform that day but I'm sure he's met Thom by now. Perhaps they ran into each other when the film makers were conducting the recording session for the musical score. And then, in a spark of inspiration, they both agreed to write a song together and record it on the spot!

Im glad you've posted the link. Amazing! Very much like seeing an old friend you love dearly after a extended absence from them. you're happy, want to cry. amazing lyrics. i just keep hitting replay. As for Julia, no she's not Lisa, but I do like her voice. Not so much jazz like Lisa but still very pretty. Does anyone have a mp3 of, or know where to purchase, this performance?
Cheers Jamie

Yes, I meant they must've met at least once at some point since agreeing to work on the film. I know this isn't the first time both acts have been involved with the same causes or played the same festival but I think something so involving as scoring is a whole different level of interaction.

^would be an interesting meeting. I have this theory that the success of Damien is partially due to O being the perfect followup to OK Computer that Yorke never delivered... but Damien did instead. So he stole all the purist Radiohead fans that didn't like the post-OK Computer change of musical direction

As far as melody, this song could use some work.
As far as meaning, this song gave me the chills. Stunning lyrics. Damien's voice sounds INCREDIBLE. Plus, it actually sounds like a Damien Rice song! Hallelujah! The girl at the end sounded like a thirteen-year-old who won a "Sing with Damien Rice" contest at her school. The only thing good about her was her stockings. Sexy. I wonder where she got 'em. |

Wow. Actually a new Damien song that's on constant repeat here. I guess the melody will be clearer in the studio version, but the way he sings it is just brilliant. It touches me.

I love how incessant it is. That's probably my favorite part, he just pounds and pounds and pounds right before the chorus.

I want to hear the studio version!! And yes, I miss Lisa's voice even in her own cd. It doesn't sound the same. |

Oh dear... Yeah... I'm not trying to be argumentative or pick a fight (at all) so, white flag and social disclaimer laid...
I actually think she sounds worse on that YouTube recording. That was hideous, to my ears. Terrible tone. It's almost like a little sister (who can't really sing, but everyone has always told her she can) stepping up to perform after Sunday dinner. Augh. So, for me... Please, please, please don't let her be part of the studio version of this song. K, thanks. |

Since Damo took some extra time off since the 9 tour, it makes total sense for him to learn the drums in the mean time.
Damn, that is one talented man! Could you imagine how amazing it would sound if he knew the violin?! Last edited by Valentino; 02-13-2010 at 08:02 PM. |
