Wow! How awesome is that?
I'll be in germany in about a week so I have all of my 20 fingers crossed, hoping he'll stay there and do something near bavaria... I'm praying so much that he will, that I think Damo will be the first artist that'll turn me to a religious person |

It's still two weeks till Oslo. So he might just stay in Berlin and do some busking the meantime.

From what I've heard, busking in Germany is mostly illegal... at least in the big cities
But maybe he'll do some last minute secret show or something! Hoping I'm not too optimistic... |

Both happy for and jealous of the people who will get to see him tonight. I wish he plays in Cologne too.

I got to the hotel shortly after 8pm. A brief conversation at the doors and I got in. Soundcheck with his drummer friend from Berlin with parts of Woman Like A Man and I Remember, solo soundcheck with half of what's been called Wild And Free here. Then the two of them went off to get some food. I managed to say hello and hand him a copy of "Shelter" for the road. "Something for me? So this is your work?" were his words, he seemed surprised. I'd think this happens all the time. I tell you it's great, having the circle coming to a close. A bit more than 5 years ago he sort of sent me on this songwriting trip when I was at one of his Berlin gigs and now this.
Back from getting food Damien and his friends sat outside on the table next to us, waiting for the band that was playing first to finish their set. We went inside and man it was packed. Damien & co made their entry through a window near the "stage", it was a hotel bar after all. Here's the setlist: The Professor Delicate I Remember Elephant Older Chests Woman Like A Man Cannonball Volcano --- The Box 9 Crimes The Blower's Daughter & Creep --- The Greatest Bastard Amie Eskimo He barely told stories but there were some details I never heard before. I'll share them in my next post. "Goodnight! Go home!" were the finishing words for the night. I couldn't hang after the show, had to get the last train back to the suburbs. I guess he just spent the night with his friends. Last edited by Canadian Island; 08-08-2012 at 10:22 AM. |

I'm so happy for you that you got to be there! Sounds like a great, intimate show.
It always surprises me to hear how humble and down-to-earth he really is |

you lucky people
He even did the greatest bastard in the main set. This is the first time he's done that. Everyone at the entry was told not to take any movies. Damien did not say anything about everyone filming like stupid however. He is said to have stayed there after the main gig endet. I bet he did an aftershow as well. The music notes were just the hotel's light stuff from whenever they have live music there. The Greatest Bastard wasn't really part of the main set. It was the second encore. The show was meant to be "a short set".
Introducing The Box/Wild And Free Damien talked about those two types of friends he seems to have. One being supportive and loving and the other holding you back in life, despite being friends. One morning he saw the latter one in the mirror and that's when he wrote The Box/Wild And Free. I think The Box is the better title now. You know... putting yourself in a box. There was a little thing about the Amie story that I didn't hear before. The girl offering his room with the big window and the stars, they were friends for years. And in the milisecond of her offering the room and saying she'd sleep in her sisters room, there was this thought of "Oh, after all these years?" and that by that time he didn't know if he felt comfortable with this with her in that moment. Then he said that he did, je just didn't know it back then. Tiny new perspective. I liked that. So... he was in really good physical shape with a neat haircut (just telling for those who were afraid he'd go for the hobo look). He still loves to play The Professor and all the stuff from 'O'. The Volcano choir thing was there and it was fun. His guitar play was quite sloppy more than once but he made up for it in intensity, just as he always does. I didn't take pictures or videos or audio recordings. There were many many people living their lives through lenses and I'm sure more will pop up on the interweb today. |
