Well! What can i say!? I dont have the words to describe how brilliant that gig was tonight! I had being saying for day's that i was expecting something different from tonight, since the advertising of the gig was delt with so differently to others. and the fact that i was all seated, and a solo performance. These factors all pointed to an intimate atmosphere, and i wasnt wrong! When i saw them setting up the stage, with candles and insense i knew what mood they were trying to set. And it worked! Damo arrived on stage to his usual reception, and opened with Lonely Soldier. I had feared the crowd would be like before, and shout throughout the performance, but was surprised by the fact that you could hear a pin drop. It was amazing! The second song Damo hit us with was The Professor and was predictably wonderful. But what followed was the best versions of Woman like A Man and Prague i have ever heard. His use of the pedals and distortion mic was fantastic. The hairs on the back of my neck were standing! (edit: Delicate was played between WLAM and Prague) He stops to talk after a laugh is raised, when he seems to be unsure of what to play next. After a shout from the audience, he agrees, and goes with Toffee Pop. Then Older Chests.... Brilliant! Volcano followed. The crowd were still considerately still, allowing Mr.Rice to play the longest most weirdly wonderfull merge into Be My Husband. That started with him using the loop pedal to great affect, and stepping back from the mic, with his voice slowly fading be began to slouch over and sing into his guitar. I guess the pick up was amplifying his voice, but with an echo, together with him lightly strumming. Still singing, he began to tap the guitar, then to drum it to the beat of Volcano, slowly forming the beat to the Nina Simone (whoops!!) track that Lisa usually sings.

The Blower's Daughter part II and Amie followed. With a great rendition of Childish using a kazoo (plastic duck whistle thingy). (Which he dropped at the end, but managed to quickly grab the distortion mic and continue). I Remember, followed. Great use of the pedal and dist mic again! The encore: Damo arrives back on stage (after a fair amount of time) with a bottle of wine and a wine glass in each hand. He sips his drink before cracking into The Blower's Daughter, Cold Water into Halleluiah and Cannonball which all seriously seriously impressed me! Damo called Sinead (from the supporting band ....*something knives???*) and his friend out to perform a song if never heard of!, while Damo played on a mini guitar. They left Damo alone on stage, and he picked up is bottle and glass. Pretending to be drunk, began to tell the story of how Cheers Darlin was writen. With the song playing in the background, he begins to sing, swigging from his glass, and swaying back and forth from the mic. His pretence of a drunk became more authentic, as he consumerd nearly two thirds of the bottle, as the sang. purposely missing his que for the beginning of a verse, as he downed his drink. Said his thank you's and goodbyes to a prolonged standing ovation! Edited by: daol20

I would also like to add that it was brilliant! I hadn't heard Childish for a couple of years. And the kazoo was inspired. Just a quick question, are the 'toffee pop' girls eskimo friends? If so, I would like to thank you for making that part of the gig so fun. Also, I assume it was you guys that started the crowd off doing Lisa's bit during Volcano? I agree that the crowd was very good tonight. I think it helped that everyone was sitting down (and in seats an' all, unlike Galway!). Missed Lisa et al., but Damien never disappoints, of course. P.S. daol20 you might want to edit your post, I'm sure Nina Hynes would be very flattered to hear she's been accredited with a Nina Simone song |

I was stuck beside them. And although that was funny during Toffee Pop, they and their boyfriends sang BADLY through the whole show. Everyone infront of them seemed to be pissed off. The two girls were bearable, and at times funny. But their bf's couldnt sing to save their lives. And one o them wouldnt shut up shouting "Loneliy!", repeatidly. They didnt ruin it thought, as i was near enough to the speakers not to hear them too much.

Oh yeah the Lonelily guy was annoying. Was he also the guy who took the joke about reminding Damien about the words a little too far in the Blower's Daughter? (If it was you I apologise ) I can't believe I've got a final tomorrow. I'm crazy. Crazy I tell you. Dan |

It's possible he didn't plan it, it just sort of 'happened'. It was one of those gigs. Besides, I think he was singing it into a little man living inside his guitar. When he went into Blower's Daughter Part 2, the people who had never heard the song thought "This has got to die" was just a way of finishing the (by then lengthly) song! |

he did 'babylon' and some other cover during the professor too, i'm glad the gig was recorded... which he actually did mention during the show, i think 'lonely soldier may have been the best song (for me anyway).
I just hope the recording gets released (in some way or other)

That's what I felt. Although the first few words of The Professor were followed by a lot of cheering, which is pretty impressive, and bodes well for the new album sales, assuming that's going to be on it. And I agree with Bumpman, 'lonely soldier' was probably my favourite, although that was mostly because I'd never heard it before. I started thinking 'early Dylan' through it. Dan |

I agree it was great, but the higlight for me was the different amazing version of songs that i'd already heard. Loneliy Soldier was performed as you'd expect to hear it on an album, and he hasnt reached that point were he becomes so familiar with a song, that he begins to experiment with it... to spice it up, and keep himself interested in it......like "Woman like a Man" and "Prague"....if you get what i mean.

Does that make any sense? Edited by: daol20

It does. But I love listening to new songs in their 'pure' form. It reminded me of when I heard The Blower's Daughter for the first time. Except I wasn't in a big room full of people then, I was in bed. But much of a muchness... I did like the spaceship taking off at the end of Amie. By the way, I'd also like to know what that other cover was. Maybe half past one in the morning isn't the best time to expect answers! Dan |

Ah so that was you! It was a spaceship dammit, have some respect! It was pretty cool having the whole room go "Jeeeeeeyaaaaaaaysssssuuuuuuusssss" to themselves as they wondered if Damien was trying to burst their eardrums. Dan |

Oh yeah, what an ego boost! She looked pretty timid coming onstage. And he was right, by the way. They both should be hired to the band. With them alongside Lisa and Vyv, it could be the prettiest band to come out of Ireland since the Corrs. Better than the Corrs in fact. Maybe even Bellfire. Dan |

Jeff Buckley sang that a time or two live, and I've got a recording of it somewhere. It is hard to listen to either of them sing that song in a serious waywithout chuckling a bit.
Edited by: cneill

Damien also sing's Portishead's Glory Box on occasion Quite convincingly, I might add. Though Lisa's version sounds more, eh, right I'm so tired, of playing Playing with this bow and arrow Gonna give my heart away Leave it to the other girls to play For I've been a temptress too long Just. .
