Default back to your man

Not sure it's already posted cant find it , but this song sounds So much Cohen...famous blue raincoat among others,......also hear a bit of 'beast and beauty' and 'is that it my friend' and baby sister, which is a cohen sounding song

with that I think the song is OK but i expect better....this song will sound great with VyVienne though

I like this a lot, it's got a real Cheers Darlin' feel to it. Love his melancholy stuff .

I'm not surprised EM heard "Is That It, My Friend?". These verses are almost the exact same melody just with different words provided. That reason, coupled with equally lazy lyric writing make this easily the least inspired song I've heard from him in years (especially coming right on the heels of the magnificent, aching yet sophisticated "No One Need Know"). I'm guessing many of the folks who are finding this beautiful/ melancholy/sad (all absolutely attributable to ITI,MF?) must not be getting much of the lame sexual innuendo/puns it's rife with. As is my custom, cliched though they may be, here are the lyrics:

Back To Her Man

The look of hunger in a woman with heat
Is enough to lift an old man from his knees
Like the piece of a puzzle he's been lookin' for
He was leanin' to dyin' now he's comin' back for more.

The look of a woman when she gets you alone
You can't see what's comin' but there's blood in your bones.
There's powder in your pocket and ships in your sea
Well it doesn't often happen but it happened to me.

Then she goes back to her man
Back to her man
Back to, back to her man.

There's a look of war in the way that you go
But the lead in your arrow is loose, don't you know?
And all that you've got is lost in the game
Of picking your own pockets for someone to blame.

There may be nothin' above the art of love
Depending on who you're dreaming of
And you can't escape when it feels like rape
But who's raping who?

Then she goes back to her man
Back to her man
Back to, back to her man. (2x)

She don't love him
She don't love him no more
Love him, love him (2x)

She don't love her man
She don't love (2x)

She goes back to her man
Back her man
Back to, back to her man.

I love the melody of this song but not the lyrics. Guess he was channeling Cohen both musically and lyrically... On first listening to this at the Paris aftershow I already found the opening line kinda gross (The look of hunger in a woman with heat) and I was like my mind didn't wanna believe he really said 'woman in heat'... too dark and twisted...

i love that euphemism to be honest (and i am a woman )
also i think "There's powder in your pocket and ships in your sea" line is brilliant!
thanks again spam!

I love the song too. But I think it's "there's power in your pocket, and ships in your sea".
Very Cohen-esque. Thanks for sharing and the lyrics.

Joyful,

Yes, I could have gone either way on which word is sung there: in your defense, he holds the "w" out really long which is not the natural stress point that a hard hit "d" would create, still I can't help thinking I hear a stealth one snuck in there (though that could admittedly just be an illusion due to the creation of very ample vibrato and/or the mic echo of same) which makes it sound less clear cut. The meaning, however, is the same either way since it would refer to gunpowder which pairs so well with the other nautical reference in the same line (if so, I'll at least give him credit for not stooping to the even more hackneyed "gun" or "cannon").

Each verse is loaded with ancient jokes about dudes either getting an erection or not being able to. I have nothing against this comedic tradition of shifting virility when it's well done (Shakespeare is the undisputed master of it) but sadly, this time around, our unusually adept penis writer didn't really bother making up any new ones.

Spam,

Reading your previous posts, you seem to interpret songs on a waaaaaaay deeper level than me. That's cool, and you may be right, but I still think it's power. And, IMHO, it's referring to his penis. The whole song screams of sex and longing to me. Like a lot of his other songs... It's not the most original thing ever, but I like the song well enough.

I hear "power" too and makes more sense to me too as Joyful says...

for what I understood this is one of the songs recorded in Iceland...

^Glo, a couple of people mentioned it in Paris and Audur (the Icelandish eskimo) just confirmed it to me... she said he did record it a couple times in those recording sessions in Iceland and he also did the same thing of making the people sing the chorus...
