Just out of curiosity, do all you songwriters write the lyrics or the melody first? Always wondered...

shane_b: i'm a singer/songwriter... good for you for wanting to branch out and set up new goals in a broader musical spectrum... i write all my own music and when it comes to performing in the studio i try to play all the instruments just to have a larger sense of satisfaction in saying "i did that" like you mentioned before...

hannah650: it depends... there's no set formula in which i create my songs... sometimes it starts with the guitar and sometimes it starts with the lyrics and sometimes it starts with some other instrument or sound or vision or melody... i think if a musician has the same method in which they create, most of their material will sound pretty similar... being able to approach things differently and uniquely is what makes music interesting and beautiful, don't ya think?

hmmm yeah i do think, interesting...

So if i was to write the lyics first, i would be writing a poem sorta? Cos in a way thats what songs are - poems with a tune (only usually way deeper than simply that)

im a pro singer songwriter and i sell my songs to publishin companies etc, i usually come up with the verse 1st, or the bridge, usually the chorus comes 2nd. The i give it a tune, easy as that.

i'm also a singer/songwriter and my biggest advice to allow
yourself to be inspired. Inspiration comes in many forms and
you have to be ready to seize it. carry around a pad of paper
for when lyrics pop into your head. Many of my songs have
started after writing down one line that randomly came into this
brain of mine. If you're interested in checking out my stuff, feel

that's me. rock on.

just write, whatever comes to mind. even if its three words. i have countless pages of all kinds of stuff. most of it not that good, but something simple ends up being something great. i have pages upon pages just filled with random lines. im very unstructured when it comes to my writing, but it works for me. it did take time and practice to "come into my own" as a writer. best of luck.

I THINK it doesn't matter what comes first! It depends on your own skills. If yourmore skilledon playing with the words you'll get first the lyrics, if you areskilledabout musicthen you'll get the music first. In the end it is the union of the two things that build up the song, so it doesn't matter which is the start...just start! But don't be too eager of writng down. Just wait for the right while, catch your feelings and then whip 'em out.

When I work usally the whole song comes aftera verse, which most of the timesis the one youfeelmore deeply and it is the one you can't keep lolckedinside. Then the frame (made up by words and note)

It is just a matter of getting in touch with your feeling anyway...

It is just my point of view, of course!

Good Luck!
