The Frames
since discovering Damien, i've heard a lot of talk about The Frames, and Glen, and The Swell Season - but not being from Ireland I don't know much about them.
Are they anything to do with Damien (I know he likes them, and that The Swell Season are touring with him) but apart from that? Or is it just common for people who like Damo to like The Frames? Thanks Nine |

I will say I started listening to the Frames because I really liked that cover of Lay Me Down that I "thought" Damo did, even though in truth it was Glen Hansard singing with Lisa and Damien faintly singing as the third vocal (I think)... but they are really really great and you should listen to them too
and the Swell Season is Glen's side project away from the band and the whole entire CD is absolutely stunning as well. There's this one song on it called "Leave" and Damien wrote the song with Glen. If you read the words you can see Damo's influence.... I heart the Frames. Damo got me started on them but now they're really up there, shoulder-to-shoulder with Damien in my book now |

adding to that, they are obviously friends and in the U.S. a few years back the Frames opened for them. I believe Bumpman pointed out to me in the Swell Season song 'Leave', which was co-wrote by Damien... he only wrote the "la la...la da..." part. which is very damien-esque. there is an interview somewhere where damien explains their relationship...i wouldnt mind finding it...if i do ill let you know.
i really like the frames, 'revelate' for a download. |

when damien started to tour properly on his own as Damien Rice in Ireland, it was supporting The Frames, in 2001. the dublin music scene is pretty small, they've been good friends for a long while.

I've seen the Frame at electric picnic last summer. I never heard about them before, and they were one of the best supprises of the festival. Great band, great songs.
It was huge when they ended the festival at the big tree stage, with damo and all the special guests. I've downloaded some songs but wich album would you advice me to buy first? |

Glen's solo album "Swell Season" or the Frames' "For The Birds".
I'd also say Setlist is a good introduction but that'd be cheating.

Got to agree The Frames are fantastic, I first seen them at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, at The Arches, I got a ticket though The Frames messageboard and went on my own, such was my need to see them!
The sound was pretty poor that night but despite that it was still a great gig, Hansard's interaction with the crowd is great! I then seen them at The Queens Hall in Edinburgh, they totally blew that venue away! A must see live band! |

But you could just as easily get their second album "Fitzcarraldo" which has a lot of their classic songs like 'Revelate', 'Angel At My Table', 'Say It To Me Now', 'In This Boat Together', 'Red Chord' and 'Monument'. Due to the shocking lack of international distribution that the band have you're unlikely to find any of their albums in your local record store, so you'll have to buy them online from somewhere like Amazon or in the UK from Towsend Records. I would also recommend reading the article about them on Wikipedia as it will give you a quick overall history of the band.

And Nine, if you live in the US/Canada - then I'm pretty sure HMV carries an OK selection of their stuff online/instore (they definitely have FTB) |

I would love to hear Damien do a cover of 'what happens when the heart just stops.' I think it would suit him well. He did a bit of star star at the end of 'Still haven't found what im looking for' and i really enjoyed it.
If you are to buy 1 Frames album, i would deffinetely recommend 'Set List' Its the live version and you capture all the emotion and general tunefulness of the songs. I emailed Glen and asked him what, 'what happens when the heart just stops' was about. He said he couldn't really explain, but when you wish to stop feeling, it can come true |

I think if I had the chance to write to him or speak with him, there would be hundreds of sentences that I would build! god, I love the frames! for each day when I come home and manage to be alone, I have one chosen 'frames song of the day'. god gave a different skill to these irish men I like whatever they have done till now and the frames, what they do is just coming through the heart..

i got setlist for a fiver never having heard anything by them before, but i heard damien in an interview say them and radiohead were his favourite bands, so i thought i would give them a try. i didnt get into it at first, but then ages after i gave it another try and really loved it, played it for a month solid just about, what happens when the heart just stops is one of my favourite songs of all time, i always end up fast forawrding through the intro to it though, where glen explains how they thought it up. on the album its on its not quite so brilliant though. i love 'neath the beaches on another album i cant remember which...
