Calling All Eskimos...
O.k. this is it, I've asked for advice in passing before but now I'm really planning my trip to Ireland and would love some help. I have a list of sites and places I want to see and I am trying to put together a rough route. Basically I'm looking to see a lot of the common stuff, Newgrange, Trinity College, etc. But what's really important is experiencing the place and the people. I want to see the scenery, the country, go into authentic pubs and listen to real music and old men tell stories and talk to people. I'm trying to get a good balance here, I don't want to do completely touristy stuff but there are certain things I'd like to see. Here's my very rough list so far...oh yeah there's way too much stuff here for my seven days but that's why this is a rough list: Dublin, Trinity College, Stephen's Green, Temple Bar, etc., Cork, Wexford, Delgany Church in Wicklow, Newgrange, Some very traditional places in the west (where Irish is spoken)...ah it's all too much. I really want to enjoy the place, I don't need all the stuff you know, just want to get into the land and the people. Please help guys, any tips would be awesome. Um...and sorry for the novel.

By the way, has anyone read McCarthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy, he's a travel writer who's half Irish half English, it's f**king hilarious. "The 8th Rule of Travel states: Never Pass a Bar That Has Your Name On It" So on that note has anyone heard of Johnny Fox's pub in the Dublin Mountains, supposedly the highest pub in Ireland...if so is it cheesy or worth checking out, I wouldn't want to violate the 8th Rule after all....ooh or Fox's Bar in Galway.
o.k. I'll stop responding to my own thread now, just so excited.

hey jenn
if you want to get to all/most of those places you are going to have to plan this trip military style. day1 - get a tour bus of dublin city - you will get to see all the sights day2 - head to newgrange day3,4 - head to galway(take in the sights, traditional pubs & the gaeltacht(irish speaking area) day5 - to cork(take in blarney(kiss the blarney stone) day 6 - head to wexford day 7 - back to dublin this is just a rough guide - your best option would be to rent a car and drive to your various destinations plus you will get to see more of the countryside. if you want to experience real traditional ireland stop off in little villages and towns along your road trip off the beaten track. ive read McCarthy's Bar and it is quite funny.I ve hear Johnny Fox'S is supposed to be good but it is abit of a trek to get to - but if you have a car no bother. anyway hope this info is of some help to you. pm if you need anymore. best of luck.

dublin - frankly i don't like it much but it's worth seeing. trinity (the book of kells), shopping, christ church cathedral, whelan's pub, the spike (biggest waste of time and money known to man).
galway/mayo - west of ireland, irish speaking area. galway's a great town, i love it. there's a place in the middle of nowhere, delphi, with a great outdoor centre i went to last year. it's also a spa, so if you're not into the outdoors you can get a mudbath or something! cork - best city in ireland (and i'm not biased at all! ). kiss the blarney stone, go to west cork (SERIOUSLY, if you want irish speaking, take a day trip to cape clear, an island off the coast of west cork, i spent three weeks at irish college there last summer, it's got pubs with old men speaking irish, etc.), go around the city, which should be nice especially cos it's european capital of culture and it's summertime and all that, buy a "people's republic of cork" t shirt (i have one in irish, they're class), look out for me! kerry - my least favourite county in ireland, i don't even know why, i just don't like it. but, it's got nice scenery etc.

Wow, thanks for all the advice guys, keep it coming....PLEASE! What do you guys think of Longford? It's just that there's the center of the Fox Clan there and I was thinking about going through...not sure though.
Why Wexford...I've always just heard it's so beautiful there but I know the in the West it's more traditional/Irish language etc. So I may have to decide between the two, or spend a little less time in both. Is it a good idea to rent a car...are they complete crap and overpriced? Ah kill...can I stay for free then? And will your mother cook for me? Actually you are on the stop I must see my killian and do a little damien sighting too. And I'm coming to Cork...no matter what! Oh yeah, I'll be coming at the end of October I know there are some art festivals going on, anything else? I'm still researching. Also how much is ripped off when it comes to lodging? Nothing luxurious, nice little cozy places with earth and atmosphere. Thanks so much guys, you know I appreciate it...also we should have an eskimo gathering when I'm there...oh pleeeeeease, can we?

jen!!! listen wexford is in the south east not west.....very sunny in the end of summer.....a bit crappy weather like in oct.
I myself am from dublin....so i can help ya there....urm, and im fluent in irish so i can talk and teach u all u want! i could bring u to an irish speakin café called "café trí-d" in which u order in irish etc.....I LOVE IT THERE!!! u dnt have 2 go as far as the galway gaeltacht to get all irish speaking, there is a gaeltacht in meath, about 45 min away from cent. dublin, new-ish established gaeltacht but still, its not 5 hours away like galway is. Howth in dublin, u have to see, pitty is not in summer ur coming as its just fantastic there...I like to go there and paint. Its just by the sea, and there's a nice long stretched pier to walk on "Maud's Icecream" place and then u get "fries" when u go home. And its on the dart. As for accom. U would want to get accom that by a very regular bus and or a dart station (aka the train) trust me it comes in handy!! PM me and i'll see if i can help. Urm....anything else??
