Default Software to create music notation?

I was just wondering if anyone knows about one? Because I've been looking everywhere for a, preferrably free, software that lets me create my own sheet music. It just doesn't seem to exist! Has anyone got any tips?
Thanks.

There's software called finale, I think you get a free trial version at their website...

http://www.finalemusic.com/

I think the free on is called finale notebook.

Sibelius is, as I understand, the 'main' music notation programme out there.

It's very not free, but *COUGH* y'know *COUGH* there's always ways *COUGHCOUGH* round these things *COUGH*.

I have used sibelius for the three tabs I have contributed to this site (see the tab section; 9 crimes, accidental babies, rootless tree live) and feel it produces a pretty nice output. However, I'm not sure it's worth the money for amateur stuff when you are just messing around, cubase is quite a common package that does scores, although it's not overly great last time I looked at it, we used logic audio at college, that seemed pretty reasonable, although I believe it's mac only these days. I think most of the midi sequencer programs have some score functionality built in to them these days.

Unforunately I'm not up to date on what's available on the free front, I'm guessing there must be something half decent out there though.
