Default 09.07.07, Theater at Madison Square Garden

I am actually kind of surprised no one has posted a setlist yet (unless I missed it). Laura and I are in agreement that this was the best Damien show we have seen in New York, except for maybe the Hiro Ballroom for its intimacy. In our year and a half here, we have been able to see the Hiro show, Central Park, one night of the Beacon, Radio City, and tonight -- and tonight just brought the heat. Rawking, jammed out, relaxed, in control, long. It really seemed like he wanted to be playing for us tonight, wasn't stressed or sidetracked. I hope to have more of a review tomorrow when I find some time, but here is the setlist with a few notes.

09.07.07
Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York

One Set:
Then Go (electric; with guest on Rhodes)
Volcano (Damien on on Rhodes, then guitar) >
Me, My Yoke, and I
9 Crimes (Damien on piano)
Older Chests
Amie (brief Bang Bang tease)
"What the Night Is For"
Random Man On the Motorway (just Vyvienne)
The Professor (just Damien, Shane, and Vyv)
Elephant
Rootless Tree (Damien on piano)
"Happy Green Joe" (improvised song, in B and A minor; chosen by the crowd)
I Remember (with Bang Bang)
Coconut Skins (with guest on Rhodes) >
drums jam (with Joel on mini kit) >
Woman Like a Man

Encore:
Blower's Daughter

The electric Then Go, Volcano, and Me My Yoke was a boisterous and loud way to start the show -- exactly how I wanted it. Older Chest is always a treat. Amie was long and jammed, although something seemed a bit off between Damien and Joel (even though I enjoyed it). "Happy Green Joe" was not happy, but it was a bit green and dealt with Joe from Ireland; very well done, nice and dark. I Remember was great and long; Shane was clearly loving the heavier sections of the night, smiling and grooving. And the jam out of Coconut Skins was very enjoyable. I guess they played longer than he was intending as they encored with a quick Blower's Daughter.

I will try to write more tomorrow. Great stuff.

I agree that it was probably one of the best shows i've seen. It did seem like he didn't want to stop playing for us! Minus the encore, the set was perrrfect. I was so glad to hear 'what the night is for' and ohmygosh I seriously don't remember him jamming out so many times in one show!

Loved the getting hit by a car story. hahaha.
sometimes i wonder what's in his head!

He was saying something about how you sometimes go out of your way to help people, like a woman is walking out of the store carrying boxes in one hand and her kid is hanging onto her other hand, and you go over and try to help her out by taking one of the boxes for her and as you do, her kid runs out of her other hand and gets run over by a car.

he also went onto say it's also like going up to a dog and giving it food, and as it takes the pieces of food, he also bites your hand off.

very grotesque tonight. haha

(then he played rootless tree)

Really enjoyed the show, it was my first time seeing him without Lisa so I had been a little skeptical but no complaints . Met him afterwards also, which was cool. More tommorow when I have a computer with a space bar!

The improv song was in Am and B, not Bm and A. Seems like a small difference, but if you play music its a world apart. The two chords don't quite belong together, which is why the band took so much time trying to figure it out.

Last night was my first Damien "experience" and I did not leave disappointed. Maybe just a little stunned by it all.

What a fantastic band he has. My only wish was that they had started on time; he told the crowd they'd played too late into the night and had to get out of there so they quickly did The Blower's Daughter and left. I think they were having a great time and would have loved to kept on going. I sure wish they did.

They went on so late because a lot of the crowd (myself included) hadn't made it into the venue on time.

I've just uploaded two videos to youtube, one of which is a 4 minute clip of happy green joe taken from the front rail, just between Vyv & Joel, and can be found here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdSW9n9Ncx8

Though I had a great spot, my videos are a bit dark. And truthbetold, knowing that this would probably be the last time I'd see Damo for quite some time, rather than shoot a lot of footage, I chose to simply enjoy the gig.

you may have been just to the right of my friend - a tall, thin, dark haired guy. vyv was slightly to me left, joel was pretty much right in front of me when he played guitar, the mini kit was off a bit to my right.

He actually referred to the haircut in happy green joe... some lyric about arriving in town with hair and taking a razor to it... sadly, i did not capture that part on the video :-(

yeah i was right underneath joel. i was to the right of this tall brown curly haired kid and this shorter girl with dark hair though so i'm confused. haha

also, i didn't like damo's haircut either. : /

That's what I had written down, Mario. Just flipped them last night. It was after midnight, lol. Thanks for the correction.

then you must have been a few people over to the right from me... my friend has straight dark hair, and i'm short and blonde

his haircut was the first thing i noticed when they walked onstage, my friend exclaiming to me 'he shaved his head!!!'

ahh yes i think i know who you are. did you notice towards the end of the show when this group of girls came up behind and started talking during songs about their cameras? I was getting pretty pissed at them, I shushed them and gave them dirty looks but they still annoyed me.

p.s. i am also a short blonde and i had on a white shirt with striped shorts, if by any chance that sounds familiar haha.

yes, there was a point when i heard some chatter behind me - i was seriously aggravated too but ignored them as best i could. i will never understand why people attend shows and then feel it's ok to talk during the performance.

i was wearing a black tank top, denim capris, and black sandals.

I was greatly impressed by the show last night. I think this is excatly where damien has been wanting to go but no offense in some ways lisa was holding him back because there really wouldn't have been a place for her in this element he went for last night. I loved that he started with then go, when i first heard it at the la show bootleg i feel in love with it and finally being able to see it live was a wonderful treat. Amie was also a top notch song and the fact that he made up a song was crazy.

i agree the show was incredible. the drum solo that brendan and joel did was amazing. loved the standing room too. I was right in front of the drummer on the rail so it was perfectt
i got backstage after the show too and got to meet everyone. it was incredible they were all so nice and damien told me how he had cut his hair the day before when they got to new york. he just decided he wanted to shave it off
vyv is hysterical and so sweet and joel was incredibly nice (and gorgeous)
little disappointed by the short encore but the rest of the night made up for it tenfold

haha long story short we ended up befriending some security guards and getting passes from people who were leaving the afterparty. apparently most of the band wasn't there for the beginning of the party so people were leaving and we got passes from them

Arrow Video of Encore

Here's Blower's Daughter, taken from the front row center stage. I have more video, now I just have to find it. It was quite the night!

I loved the show. I was lucky to have great people around me. And, I loved the haircut.
