Default Lowlands Festival

Apparently Damien is playing at the Lowlands festival (17-19 August) in the Netherlands:

Really nice line-up. And that's just the beginning. I really wish I could go...

18 & 19 Aug = V Festival in the UK, so I'm assuming he'll play the 17th in Lowlands...

The official Lowlands site doesn't confirm it yet. But if he'll be there it's another reason for me to work hard and get money for the tickets.

I don't know, so far they've said we should be patient. But I think they add new artists to the line-up every week or something.

Next weekend is the Pinkpop festival in Holland, traditionally they will be announcing the first names for Lowlands then.

But if the names that are being leaked now are anything to go on, it will be a great edition

I know!
Arcade Fire, Interpol, Kings of Leon, Nine Inch Nails, Damien Rice, Saybia (HAHA NOT!), Sonic Youth, Tool.

Of course, Morten's only response was: "where's the smashing pumpkins!?"

We'll bring a cd player and a cardboard cut out of Billy especially for Morten, then they'll sort of be there!

a video of "I remember": click here

the audio stream of his whole performance:
click here (I only here noise, so the stream might not be working properly, but they'll prolly fix that soon. Or maybe it's my stupid computer)

the reviews have been quite harsh, and to be honest, it wasn't his best performance, but it was by no means bad.
His guitar string broke, and then he ****ed up the words and tuned his guitar wrong, but it was funny because he finally seemed to loosen up and this helped his performance.

I'm always terrible at rehashing setlists, and to be honest my brain is still a bit fuzzy after the festival. But he opened with 9 Crimes, him on piano, and he ended with WLAM. In between that he also played Volcano, Cannonball, Delicate, Dogs, Me My Yoke and I, Coconut Skins, I Remember, The Blower's Daughter, not necessarily in that order and i might be forgetting some songs.

He played on friday, in the biggest tent of the festival (holds 18.000 pple, plus you can watch it from outside on screens as well
I was standing upfront (of course ) so i don't know if it's true, but apparently the tent was by no means filled to capacity.

He wasn't very talkative, but like I said, he seemed to loosen up after the guitar string broke.
The reviews I've seen are pretty bad. They say that his music works better in an intimate setting (which is true, but that doesn't mean it's not suited for a big crowd) and that Damien compensates too much for the loss of intimacy with big gestures and long intros and over the top climaxes. One critic even called him "pompous"
How very dare he

I really enjoyed the performance, however he didn't blow me away.

An unexpected surprise for me was Patrick Watson he played early afternoon on Sunday, and it was a real treat. hadn't heard of him before, but I'm definitely going to check him out.

Arcade Fire were brilliant, Tool was good, and I really enjoyed My Brightest Diamond.

More audio and video from the festival can be found here

click on Vrijdag voor friday's performances, Zaterdag voor Saturday's performances, and Zondag voor Sunday's performances

I know - maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe it was the fact that they decided on a bit more experimental and instrumental set because Maynard (the singer) has been struggling with a throat infection recently, but after 30 minutes I got a bit distracted. I started to focus more on the fact that I had to pee, that I desperately needed something to drink, and by that time I had also been standing for 4 hours, and my feet were just hurting. All that combined made it a good performance, but nowhere near thye WHOOHOO experience it was last year at Roskilde.

Arcade Fire on the other hand: WHOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
It definitely made up for the disappointment of them cancelling their European tour back in March.

aw, wish i could've been there, really! rain and all.
and it is true: it's impossible to enjoy the music with a full bladder. But you just gotta be drunk enough to not care about peeing in a bottle

the rain actually wasn't that bad. It rained a bit on friday and at night, but during the day we even had sunshine.

And I'm never that drunk that I don't care about peeing in a bottle,
but when I think about it could have solved 2 of my problems during Tool: my full bladder and my thirst.... hmmmm...... eeeeeeew

hey if you just carry around a small container of fruit punch concentrate, mix it in there and VOILÁ! the pee won't taste through as much! and hey, blend that with vodka and the party starts all over again.

Yup, provided they will have artists that are worth waiting long enough for to mix pee punch in the process

Does someone know what that sound was just before this gig?? It was some kind of ehm, a lot of pianos, very minimal thing . Maybe this is something played at more gigs of Damien? It almost felt like it was supposed to be.

^didn't Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell already do that..?
Well, maybe the world needed to be re-conquered.

Yes, before the Copenhagen June gig there was also about 10 minutes of piano stuff that grew in intensity and almost made me crazy - sort of reapeating the same pattern over and over.
