i thought it was an amazing gig. highlights included david arnold joining them on stage the last hour or so. they even played "play dead" by bjork. they also did "kids song" by mic christopher. bits of other cover versions that i remember... david gray's "babylon", "hallelujah", "purple haze", "seven nation army", "glory box" by portishead", and more i can't remember. they played every song from "o" i think and some others like the professor and "woman like a man" and "the blower's daughter part two". "cold water" and "amie" were even more fantastic than usual. at the end of amie damien had fun with his distortion pedal and he sat down staring up at the ceiling as he made spaceship noises and all the lights were dimmed and i was half-expecting a spaceship to appear... i thought joel shearer and pedestrian were great. and damien said they will be playing some dates in ireland in february. the other support act, lucas from galway", were joined by lisa on stage for one song. she sing backing vocals on it on their new cd apparently. two hours and forty five minutes of great music!

there was a guy on the top teir, right in the middle (deadly view) with a camcorder on a tripod, looking kinda professional. i wonder was that a vicar st. guy, or a Damien Rice guy, and will it be available.maybe thats your mate, cartman? the camera was digital so the quality should be good. my friend claire was snapping away with her camera all night. it aint digital but it has a massive zoom and a brighter than normal flash, so hopefully they'll be good.

I couldn't believe it when Damien came back on after saying goodbye, and STAYED on for another hour!
It became a surreal experience during the last half-hour. It was so soulful and sensual. I was ecstatic when they finally played Eskimo and I Remember. I thought they had decided to leave them out! They're two of the best. I'm pretty upset that the gig wasn't recorded for DVD because it was a truly amazing experience. Does anyone know it was recorded? I'm guessing it wasn't. It should have been. Ok Damien, so you ARE only some f**king guy. But when that f**king guy gets together with those other 4 f**king people, some of the most beautiful, inspiring, exciting & soulful music I have ever heard of in my life is produced. Last night was one of the the best nights of my life. </font> |

The only thing I'm interested in who recorded that gig.

There was someone on the official board, but that recording is missing the last half an hour or something.

I seen people following Damien around with video cameras before the gig when he was outside with people all around him. There was this Glen Hansard looking with ginger hair and a beard and there was a girl. They were then walking around filming the gig occasionally stopping in front of me (I was sitting to the left of the stage).

It wasn't. I was at both, and while his birthday gig was fantastic, Vicar Street was something very very special. Can't see him ever staying on the stage for another 2 hours 45 mins . . anywhere . . ever. Just an amazing night.

Thanks Kitten, I really prefer when people don't compare gigs. I think they should all just stand on there own

Emmett, I actually saw you that night. I was right above you in the front of the balcony (by the stage), so couldn't pop down. You seemed to be enjoying yourself
The people using the cameras and wearing the headphones were recording on behalf of Damien, not for themselves. |

i'd a balcony seat but jedi mind tricked the bouncer into letting me downstairs so gwen and i sat on the right of the stage about five rows back. had a fantastic view and couldn't believe the amount of people taking photos - was kicking myself 'cause i still had my camera all set up with telephoto lens and 1600 film *at home* from the thrills gig at whelans a week or two ago. i'd assumed they'd be confiscating cameras on entry as often vicar street is pretty strict. ahh well, nevermind!
i have to be honest, i was completely dreading the gig for weeks beforehand. it wasn't as bad as i feared it might be, but i wasn't blown away either. i'll probably end up writing a review at some stage because i've mixed feelings about it even now a few days later. i don't in any way want to imply it wasn't a fantastic show because it was, but i just didn't enjoy it as much as i've done others. sorry to those who hate comparisons with other gigs! but that's the truth :/ some parts were genius: seven nation army on the cello, the bjork song, even 'prague' was suprisingly enjoyable but on the whole i think i'd just seen it all before once too often to really get the buzz. the second support act - pedestrian - definitely have potential though, would like to see them again in a year or so and see how they've progressed. all in all, damien's done incredibly well for himself as we always knew he would, and long may it continue. i'm just not sure if i'll be in the audience again until the next album comes out... maybe give some other fan who's not as biased and jaded and cynical or a pain in the ass a chance to see him ;D |

Yeh Aisling, I actually noticed you got downstairs (somehow spotted you across the other side of the venue). I was very happy by the stage though, so I wasn't even going to try getting downstairs.

hehe... yeah it was a simple matter of
me:"*waving ticket* do i really have to go upstairs?" bouncer:"yes" me:"do i really have to go upstairs?" bouncer:"yes!" me:"but do i *really* have to go upstairs?" bouncer:"ahhh go on then...*let me through*" i'm getting shockingly cheeky these days. and yeah jeweller i'm with you on that philosophy! rock on... x.... or y... or z... or whatever 'the angry album' is going to be called.... |

ya i got all nervous and just couldn't go over, well i nearly gathered up the courage at one stage while my friend was gone to the bathroom but then he came back and i bottled out. i was to the left of (the person who i think was) Emmett and slightly above him, i had a brown chord coat and skirt on and black snow boots, long blonde hair tied up in a pony tail (straight hair). were you with emmet?
