The Box - Meaning
While we are on the discussion of the meaning of his songs (see colour me in thread) I am interested if anyone knows more about The Box. He mentions about how he wanted to talk to someone (a male) and decided to communicate through song. I believe in Brooklyn he said it was someone who he admired. Could this be to Glen or former band members?

From different openings, I think he is speaking of/to himself in this song.

yes, in the story the friend is himself
he tells the story that we all have supportive friends but we all have this unsupportive friend that always tells you that all you do is **** and not enough and la merda (he said that at an Italian gig) and this friend always try to bring you down... but one day he woke up, went to brush his teen, look at this friend in the mirror (aka himself) and said, **** it. but actually donīt think the song is about that. I think itīs more to do with not wanting to commit in what society wants you to, especially in relationships...

I think he's speaking to the side of himself that wants to put him in a "society" box. Or whatever side of himself that wants people to like him, puts on a mask, and all.
So it's the "free" Damien speaking to the "boxed" Damien. I think that he feels that he's holding himself down from being totally free. |
