Default Local papers review of 9.... Harsh...

Four years after the magnificent O and Damien Rice finally delivers the follow up. He shouldn't have bothered!
Things start well with Lisa Hannigan taking lead vocals on the sublime '9 Crimes' but although 9's first half is strong it's just rehashing the O formula - wounded romanticism, swelling strings, sparse acoustic guitar, big choruses - only less successfully and with O's engaging emotionalism replaced by bombast.
With 'Rootless Tree' and 'Me, My Yolk & I', Rice becomes a bad parody of himself and from there it goes south. Still nothing will prepare you for 'Accidental Babies'. I never though Rice would stoop so low as to write a 'Do you think of me when you're having sex with him?' song. It's 6.35 horrific minutes you'll never get back!

Hmmm...

It's one person's opinion, don't think Mr Rice has to worry about lost sales from such a badly written review. I don't agree with the simplistic reasoning, but I do agree those three are quite weak songs. Maybe not rootless tree as much, but the other two are skippers for me. *waits for tirade of abuse*

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but that review reads as if it came from a high school newspaper. (No offense to anyone of h.s. age, of course... you all know what I mean.)
I really like Rootless Tree and Me, My Yoke and I, there are weaker songs on the album, really *coughDogscough*

Ah well, the author of that little piece is probably a HUGE Brittany Spears fan.

Agreed. If anything, it's not even up to that standard.
