i think she's still stuck in the last turn of the century... things changed a while ago, but i don't think that message got lost somewhere on the way to her. the saddest thing for me is that some teachers think they don't have to learn anymore after they finish their education and just stay put where they left their programme...

^The problem is not really with her, she really seems like a perfectly all-right teacher (unlike some of her colleagues), but it seems that the whole educational system is plagued by this attitude. No surprise that it doesn't really work (there is a general feeling of desperation and futility among the teachers I've met).

Sorry to hear that, Rai. A lot of teachers I know have been expressing the same sentiments, and some are saying that teaching is just not fun for them anymore because a lot of their creativity is being taken away. Exceot for my sister, who teaches science in a sort of an alternative high school in inner-city Milwaukee. It's for students who have fallen behind, and she gets some pretty bad kids, but she absolutely loves it, partly because she gets a lot of freedom there to teach how she wants to, I guess because they are so desperate to get teachers in a school like that they will let them do anything.

I'm sorry Rai! I think most education systems are like that, in general. The teachers who stood out most for me, and were the most inspiring, in high school and university were always the ones that went against the grain.

Last night I did not sleep. Recently I haven't slept till 5 or 6 or maybe 7am. It was 6.30 this morning, and I decided to sit it out. I had lectures at 10 so I wasn't risking going to bed. I ended up writing a song that i'm proud of, and then drinking 12 (yes, 12) cups of coffee within the space of an hour.
When it came to the lectures, I was completely buzzing. I had lots of urges to shout up answers to this laid back lecturer..("Why does the BNF list side-effects in alphabetical order? It makes no sense")..(I was on the verge of shouting "It makes perfect alphabetical sense"), which would be unlike me
I told that lecturer that my friend "could take on the bull" that was in his lecture slides..thankfully he laughed, but I knew he would because he's a sound guy.

I managed to stay awake most of the day till 7pm, at which point I fell into a seriously deep sleep. Now I'm slightly ****ered, because I woke up there at 2am wide awake. I'll try get back to sleep...

My husband's company just laid off 11 people this week (thankfully, he is not one of them!) They laid off a bunch of people last fall, then switched to a shorter work week with less pay at the beginning of the year, and now this . . . I'm pretty sure his job will be safe as long as the company doesn't fold, for a variety of reasons, but it's still scary.

My sister was supposed to come to visit me this weekend.

She missed her flight yesterday, and booked another flight for today costing around 100euro at short notice. The flight was cancelled (from Dublin Airport to Aberdeen Airport).

...proceeds to consume a bottle of Red Square vodka in the next three hours

I'm sure your husband's job is secure! I understand the frightening nature of the situation though..especially if he's familiar with coworkers..staff moving..it's great that he'll be fine though

..How can I spend three weeks of the summer on a refund from a Glastonbury Ticket (I've no-one to go with! People bailed..cost £185..)? Willing to work and/or play and/or study.
Physics camp in Michigan sounds good craic..not

Maybe I should invent and solicit a "Nuclear Car Bomb" and be the first person to require Baileys on tap

Lol, it's my nephew's party, so it's going to be mostly family anyway, it'll be just like one of our normal family gatherings except with a few more people and presents & cake!

^Why would you want to give the ticket away? Even if your friends bailed out, you could still go and get new ones, its Glastonbury after all. With cider, bloody hippies and more New Age shops in town than lampposts. I'm sure its fun if you keep your mind in that certain happy state.
