Tipped for the top.
There was a piece in the ticket yesterday about various music biz giving their opinions on what will happen in 2006. This was one of them:

i think he really meant that he can turn Lisa into Dido, a comercial success, those biz value artists' talent in their way, business way.

Lisa doing the music to a rennee zell film.....(*cough* *cough*...im trying hard to avoid a certain topic) Imagine silent night when shes running down the street after colin firth/hugh grant/the pope etc. Doesnt work really. IT would fit something more like lost in translation or shawshank redemption |

shoot me in the brain and call me suzy, but i like dido... however i hate it when people compare me to being the next "?" even if it's someone really cool... people wanna succeed in their own way for their own reasons. Nobody can comercialise lisa.
That's a funny thing though "comercialising"... sometimes even the ones who think they know everything, are supprised by the success of something which is not expected to be comercially pleasing. I never in a million years thought the darkness were going to be anything but a cool underground band that i liked. and i'm afraid that there's no way of making sure that bands and musicians that you like, will only ever be featured in films that you like, sorry to say it. Just be thankful that damien doesn't get squished into our ears 24 hours a day, blunty style (although i'm hearing "cold water" in quite a few tsunami adverts)

to be brutally honest lisa can go be the next dido if she wants. don't get me wrong her contributions to damien's music are amazing but if she went on to be a solo artist i wouldn't really seek her music out. on the other hand damien's work could stand on it's own quite nicely in my opinion... not negating the contributions of the rest of the band, but i would be just as interested in damien solo with just his acoustic guitar... |

lisa the next dido??? that's not too good cause Dido was eh, so-so, then kinda disapeared. If Lisa ever really breaks mainstream, she'll be MUCH better than so-so and remain (at least I'd still be playing her music 20 years after its release ) as for her being the best of her generation among the irish, i can't say too much either way cause I haven't heard enough to compare, but she is hella good!

Hmm, well I agree with the small number of posts exonerating Dido - it's really a matter of preference, and her music is credible and can incite pleasure and empathy in many listeners. That said, I see Dido's voice as stirring. Lisa's, meanwhile, is haunting. I'm inclined to think that music by Damien Rice wouldn't be as powerful without Lisa's contribution; her voice is exquisite, (imagine the Blower's Daughter without 'Did I say that I loathe you, / Did I say that I want to / Leave it all behind' if you will...)
I do however dislike the journalistic tendency to label one artist as 'the next (insert name of previous musical phenomenon with comparable charms - and similar hair - here)' as it does undermine individuality and innovation. Lisa could doubtless produce some excellent solo material. Though I'd rather she and Damien continued to collaborate for the time being...unless of course the new album never does appear and Mr Rice decides that he would rather go and live on a vineyard, (which is of course, entirely possible... ) As for Damien being the next David Gray and James Blunt being the next Damien Rice (above criticism of this view aside for a moment,) David Gray and James Blunt are, quite frankly, a bit dull, even if their ditties are pleasingly melodious. Damien is about passion, and expression, and as such he is without rival.
