Live Looping.
I've been scanning round the internet for forums with musicians on them that may know a thing or two about live looping hardware, until I realised here is as good a place to ask as any!
So does anyone have a live-looping pedal? I'm looking for something around £150 (Preferrably cheaper!) with a decent performance at least, I'm thinking maybe a Boss RC20XL?Cheaper than what Damo uses too...What do you use? Overall looking for a decent sampling size, fair price, and easy to use. Any suggestions?

If you can get the RC-20XL for that price then go for it. I've got one and I love it to bits. http://www.thomann.de/ do them at a good price.
For looping it's actualy a superior piece of kit to what Damien uses, the line 6 DL4 is first an formost a delay pedal (and a really outstanding one at that) but it only has a 14 second (I think, possibly 16) looping capacity. The Boss pedal is a dedicated loop station and as such you can do more with it, you can put on and take off overdubs and stuff like that, you can also record for about a quarter of an hour. It's the pedal that Final Fantasy uses and he's the most impressive loop based musician I've ever seen live. I actuall think I saw one of them as part of Damien's live rig at the gig in LA in November at the El Rey but as far as I was able to see he was still using the Line 6 for his loops. A slightly cheaper option might be the Boss RC-2 it's a loop pedal that used the traditional boss stomp box casing but I don't think it's got the same range of functionality as the RC-20XL. Of course if you really feel like spending a ton of money you could get he big brother of the RC-20XL

i was actually going to go down the route of the line 6 dl4 but the looping time on the rc20 is much longer. even if you dont use it live it makes you learn alot from your own playing and is great for messing around. you'll be entertained for hours

I didn't know that the RC-20 was the one Final Fantasy uses. That's a pretty good indication of how good the pedal is.
He can do anything with it.

For loops? Yes, 2 line 6 DL-4's. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and checked out his board afterwards. They're they only ones I can remember but there were delay and reverb pedals there too.

How did you go and have a look at his board afterwards Ian?
I'm thinking about getting a few pedals, but at the moment i haven't been able to get any gigs or anything, plus the fact i have no money!

Do you know what sort of sound you want for your rig? I've got the following on my "I'm going to buy eventually" list ... and furthur down the line I want one of these... Also, not guitar pedals but I'd also like ...

Ohh, lucky you then.
Yeah, i'm into reverb and delays, very mysterious and perhaps ambient sort of sounds. Also though, a bit of overdrive and wah for different songs. Not exactly sure really, but those are the main ones, oh and maybe a loop. I can't work out what those last two items are!

Me niether. Looks like door wedge and a keytar...
Thanks for your help though everyone I can afford the Rc-50 but I think I'm going to stick with the Rc-20, I'll probably never use it live, just use it for a bit of a faff around. I've given up on gigging and writing songs, so it's really just something to do.

Googling has taught me that the wedge thing is an Ebow, an electronic bow for guitars.
and the keytar thing is a Suzuki Qchord....

Wow, my flatmate got a plain and simple RC-2 for his birthday yesterday, I've hardly put it down.
I can't believe how much fun I'm having! |

Crybaby's a lot of fun, but like a lot of other things it's been tainted by silly people overusing it. It only really should be used sparingly.

Mite aswell put my opinion in
for looping the DL4 is fine but not for the price the akai headrush is just as good, if you want a nice, cheap and simple loooper get that.

In the end I gave up and bought the Boss RC-20XL. I hope I gig enough this summer to make it back though!

Does anyone know what looper Kaki King uses: You can see it clearly in her "Gay Son's of Lesbian Mother's" video. Search youtube!

I'd love to learn how to loop properly - I reckon it would be like learning a new instrument though, it looks so damn confusing!
I'd be bound to lose my tempo half way through and everything wiuld f*ck up royally.

This has probably been discussed but I don't have time to read through the entire thread as I'm currently at war with Audity, but what's the cheapest loopymagiggy that you could buy to start off with that's any good?

I'd recommend diving right in and getting a decent one. As I said above I have the RC20XL and it's got more space that you'll probably ever use, but it's better than being confined to a couple of seconds (like you might be with cheap pedals). It's also got a reverse button
I wouldn't say it's as difficult as learning a new instrument... unless you're awful at guitar/your instrument of choice (which I know you're not), you'll be fine. It's fun too!

YO!
i think damo runs everything through the akai E2, which is good, and probably closer to your price-range but if your ok with upping you'd be wise to go eith the digitech jamman. in addition to the quarter-inch, it's got a mic input and compact flash storage. |
