"Never" / "Eve, the apple of my eye"
Hey everybody. I have a question for the Damien / Juniper experts.......
Bell X1 has a great song called "Eve, the apple of my eye." I believe that this was actually a Juniper song first called "Never" and that Damien either wrote or co-wrote the song. Does this sound right? Also, do any recordings exist of Damien singing this song? I suppose its possible that they recorded it as Juniper, but I also think that Damien was including this song in his live sets around 2004. |

Yep, I have a recording of it from somewhere. Don't know too much about it, 'cept that it's definitely Damien singing it... It fades into another song at the end but I forget which...
I probably downloaded it from someone from here's sharing folder so they probably know more about it. If not I'll upload it for ya later.

This is one song I definitely like ebtter in Juniper's version than in Bell X1's. When Damien sings it it's much rawer and not so radiofriendly.. Me likes

Thanks! If any of you wouldn't mind sending either or both versions, I'd love to hear it.
Was I right in saying that it was written or co-written by Damien? |

I am pretty sure I first heard Eve synched from Cold Water-very similar chords too. I heard him sing it at Vicar St 2nd Feb 2004 (intially the best concert I had attended but then realised EVERY Damo gig is similarly breathtaking!) I hadnt realised it was a Bellies song until later and then became a huge Bell X-1 fan too which is nice. Yes heard the Gemma Hayes version too which is ace but sadly not an immaculate recording. Also heard the Juniper songs and must admit I quite liked the Never version! Dilemmas. I dont have my Vicar St copy to hand but am pretty sure it was played on the first night where it was all standing (3 Feb was all seated and a better behaved crowd) Am I talking bollocks and simply imagined this??.........

^I could kill for the Gemma version...
I also have a Never sung by Damien but I don't know from where I got it (it might have been from here: http://bellx1.davejeffery.com/Upload/ but the site seems to be down). Its without any add-on songs and not the most passionate performance. I preffer the Bellies version, the bitter self-ironic lyrics fit Paul much more.

As far as I know, there are at least 3 Juniper versions in circulation. "Never, Live at Home", "Never, Live at the Olympia" and the 2fm version. He played it live towards the start of 2004 as an intro to Cold Water, which he said at one of the shows was inspired by the song (it is the same chords after all!).

^You could try to change the name of the file. That usually solves this issue. Try only "Never" first and if that fails, be creative and use something like, dunno, "wombat".
Edit: The Zshare is working fine. Muchas gracias

^I don't know. But its curious that despite all the co-operation and interaction that goes on inside this music scene, they did not really work together since Damien bailed out.
This Gemma-version is soooo great. I just love her voice, its hard to explain, but they way she "jumps" notes is just like an uilleann pipe...

^I read in an interview with Paul Noonan that they are indeed "still close"... but if Paul was hesitant to ever work with Damien again, I'd understand that sentiment.
The ft. Gemma version is lovely, thank you |

That Gemma version is great. Thanks glo!
It really seems like a completely different song than the Bell X1 version. |

Thanks for this
I really prefer Paul's voice on this one. I'm really digging the bellies... Lovely stuff though...

"Damien was the driving force behind Juniper, he's that kind of person, he cuts huge swathes through people's lives. I will always look for Damien's approval about things because he was so instrumental in all of us finding a voice in the first place. "Of course, part of me is fiercely jealous of his success and his lack of appreciation for that. But I've known him since we were 13 so what we have is beyond the music lark, I feel. I'm not in touch with him that often nowadays, but there's still an indelible mark there." |

i forgto ask for the lyric...
i found eve, apple of my eye lyric, but juniper´s version seems different at some point... specially at the end... does anyone know what they say? bell xi lyric: You left it, I sent it I want it back You left it, I sent it I want it back If I had you here, I'd clip your wings Snap you up and leave you sprawling on my pin This plan of mine is oh so very lame Can't you see the grass is greener where it rains You left, I died, I went and you cried You came, I think But I never really know I've served my time I've watched you climb The wrong incline But what do I know (but you never really know: juniper´s version) Accept it, Don't let it Turn the screw (**** you up: juniper) Accept it, And let it Scream back at you (**** you up) Now this applies both equally to you and I The only thing we share Is the same sky These empty metaphors They're all in vain Like can't you see the grass is greener where it rains [In the garden Snake was a charmin' And Eve said let's give it a try Now lead us not into temptation But no matter how hard I try When in the garden and Snake is a charmin' And Eve says let's give it a try Eve is the apple of my eye And I lie behind you And a cradle you in the palm of me And I pat your hair down I think will we sink or swim? 'Cause we could do either on a whim] ===> bell x1´s version

I'm actually more interested in hearing Damien doing Jeff Buckley's "The Last Goodbye." That's an amazing song, but Buckley's voice was one of a kind. I'm thinking that the arrangement would have to be different to suit Damien. Has anybody heard this?
