Was keeping this under my hat until I got tickets with I did yesterday.
On october 27th Sufjan Stevens is playing the Douglas Hyde Gallary. If you don't know him he's a bit like Elliot Smith without the drug references and added God talk, or Nick Drake with less elaborate guitars. I think he's a f**king genius. Tickets are €12 each and when I bought mine yesterday there were only 38 out of 100 left. Tickets available from the gallary (arts block in TCD, nearest entrance is the nassau street one.)

I downloaded his last two albums (Michigan and Swans), though I must say I don't "put" him in the vicinity of either Nick Drake or Elliott. He seems closer to Iron & Wine, perhaps due to the religious references.

I listened to Roman Candle and Seven Swans back to back yesterday and I noticed a definate resemblance in the guitar parts.

I don't have Roman Candle (I only have Either/Or and a collection of B-sides) - I may well have missed something, Ian. I was thinking in more general terms of atmosphere, lyrical content, production. Do you know Iron & Wine? Glad to hear you are still listening to it, Petra. Seven Swans (don't know if I told you this before?) are songs that were written during the 'Michigan ... ' sessions - the (more religious) outtakes, so to speak. I love the title song, Seven Swans. Too bad I didn't have the other one yet at the time, otherwise I would have sent you that along as well. I still haven't decided yet if I'm going to actually buy either one, though - I'll need to listen to them some more.

I don't know Iron and wine, worth checking out?
I've also got enjoy your rabbit which is his second album, wierd electronica, its completely different, the fact that he produced Michigan after that is astounding.

Yes, Iron & Wine is highly recommended! He has two albums out: the home recorded debut, 'The Creek Drank The Cradle', http://www.ironandwine.com/IWcover.htmland his most recent venture into the studio, 'Our Endless Numbered Days', http://www.ironandwine.com/IWoend.html. Both are excellent. P.S. Oh, and thanks for the Rabit tip! I'll keep that in mind. Edited by: Angela

I saw Iron & Wine when I was in NYC last, and the show was incredible. But I have to say that the first album is not worth the cash, especially since you have to buy it on import. The sound quality is terrible. I hear the second album is worth it, though.

Ian, don't listen to Valerie I do respect her personal opinion, but there would not even have been a second album that any record label would have bothered to pay the production costs for if it wouldn't have been for the stunning debut album. That it was, like Damien's 'O', produced at home, has no bearing on the quality of the songwriting. Lo-fi production will always sound different from studio production.

eh, but you HAVE to admit that O's sound quality is far superior to Iron & Wine's debut. Seriously, recording it at home is no excuse. Look at Damien. Look at Cody ChesnuTT (stupid capital Ts).
