You guys are hopeless. Woman like a man is just sooooo much better than both of these songs. Hell, WLAM is so much better than MOST of Damien's songs. If not all. But that's apparently just me...

I agree with lin@ woman like a man is great, my favourite of the B sides. But le professor et la fille is a good choice too.

there are tons of unreleased songs.. and many different versions... it would be like combining O with 9.... and i think almost all of the songs we know about are listed in the post "help me find the music i'm looking for!!!", it's all unreleased stuff... well some of it is released, but most isn't :P... there might be a song or two i missed, but they are ones i've never heard of then :P

Strong, very well reasoned out argument you have there.

"The Professor" is just about as good as songwriting ever gets. Brilliant, thought provoking and witty lyrics, musical complexity, catchy as all get out and yet all of that is offset by deeply felt longing due to a self-knowledge that has tragically come too late.

I doubt you could even tell me what exactly half of the lyrics of WLAM mean.

She just likes WLAM better - I don't, but you can't really argue logically about individual taste now can you..?

I don't think he was objecting to his/her taste, rather the feeling that we were wrong, and s/he was right.

Well I read her post as more tongue-in-cheek than that - but who knows..

Whilst I agree that The Professor is incredible - I do think your post was a little patronising, i too read her post as a bit of a joke... Also, Professor isn't that musically complex as you say... perhaps melodically and structurally, but accompaniment-wise it really isn't very complex at all.

Also, I doubt any of us could tell you what half of the lyrics to almost all of Damien's songs mean. He's not particularly open in a specific sense, and his lyrics are very much open to interpretation a lot of the time. He doesn't even know what half of them mean. (Obviously I don't mean in a literal sense and I'm sure you don't either) But I don't think your comment was fair.

would u want to include "don't explain"?
is "your ghost" a cover?
"boring afternoon"? (it's a juniper song i think?)
"Desafinado"?
"little sister"?
"my city ****ty"?

lonely soldier has been released as a charity song hasn't it?

Don't Explain= cover
Your Ghost= cover
Desafinado= cover
Boring Afternoon= it's there under Juniper songs
Lonely Soldier= it's there
Little Sister= are you talking about the Juniper song that says "Little sister's been watching you.." or about Baby Sister? If the latter, then it's there.

That was no argument at all, it was just my humble and purely subjective opinion.

I know what the song means to me. And that's totally enough.
But now that I think about it, I realize that most of my most favorite songs in the world are songs I can't really decipher lyrically. Probably because it makes them timeless. Depending on your mood, situation or age they might have a completely different meaning. And I love that.

Well read. Note to self: Use more of these funny little smilies.

Do you really think I could seriously question the musical taste of a bunch of Damien Rice fans? The Professor is an amazing song. We should all agree on that. I just like WLAM more and that's it. So relax and come down from your horse, Spamlet.
