Billboard news: 9 is in at #22 in US Album chart!!!!
From billboard.com
Damien Rice's "9" cracks the big chart at No. 22 with 45,000, becoming his best charting and sales week; his 2003 album "O" only managed a No. 114 peak. |

Yep, Wheels you were first looking at last week's chart. Every week, Billboard first announces the new number 1 and all the entries in the News section and then later they update the Chart section...
I think 45,000 sales is great!! That's a lot considering he has zero radio or TV airplay!!! |

Anyhow, I'm glad Damien's doing much better this time around - maybe he'll be inspired to add a few more gigs onto his US tour, and maybe that'll lead to him come up north of the border? Maybe? Oh well, a girl can dream. It's still great news though! |

Yeah, that'd be nice. The solo gigs he did here last summer were amazing.

Astonishing news! He practically debuts in the top 20 without any visible support aside from word of mouth.
I agree that 3 minutes on Leno and 3 on Conan does not count for real TV airplay. Clearly, in this case however they did quite the trick in converting watchers into buyers. Same with MBE for not being significant radio play because the folks who listen to that show mostly already know and love Damo. I think what we're finding is that the internet and YouTube in particular is having an amazing effect here. Essentially, outside of his bigger fans nobody really knew this record was coming out until right before it actually did. Even when and a few days after, I had to tell all the people who I turned on to him over the years personally that album two existed. perhaps it's the Calgon approach and many of our fellow Yanks heard from acquaintances across the pond. I mean there's just been almost no publicity about it and the single/video won't hit America 'til at the very earliest next week. I'd guarantee you though that this "Grey's Anatomy" appearance will push us right through into the top twenty.

I know you're not in the band Spamlet
I also don't think that Damien really needs a "cheerleading squad". His music is more than capable of doing that for him.

Agreed.
I meant more because we enjoy cheering for our beloved team due to our pride in them, rather than because he would ever need our assistance to win the game.

*puts away the pom-poms*
Are the US album sales (as opposed to the singles) soley based on sales?

What else could they be based on? Are you asking if downloads count?
Am I the only one surprised that there were more albums bought in the first week in the UK than in the US?

no wheels, the US (& NZ) singles charts are 50% sales, 50% radio airplay (maybe not 50% split but they are combined)

This is what comes of not having putting out the single/video here yet.
The other night I actually saw the video for "Volcano" on VH1!!! That just goes to show you how much they're itching to play a new one by him. They were basically bending over backwards to help promote an artist they clearly love, armed only with 2 year old clips!

UPDATE
Week 3, 9 goes down to 87, but good sales of 15,287 copies... So far 84,238 copies sold in 3 weeks in the US, not bad. Just checked the Billboard singles chart and 9 Crimes is not there...I was hoping that the presence of 9 Crimes on the I-tunes top 50 could break the song into the Singles charts but the thing is that for the US singles charts are 2/3 airplay + 1/3 downloads, so I guess downloads weren't enough... Maybe next week... |
