It's Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. He was in the german resistence to Hitler and wanted to kill him (but failed and died for that). 20th July 1944. 60 years ago now. Edited by: Hendrik

wow that's interesting, shaun...

i just mean: if we remembered, i mean REALLY remembered and REALLY understood what we can learn from that damned period, why are we still not trying to work actively to avoid fascism or any kind of fanatism in this world?

this is of course a rather 'naïve' statement. i mean it nonetheless. (what a hippie i am!)

I think there are a lot of people who still believe they're actively working to avoid fascism and fanaticism. I for one do the best I can in my line of work! And I dont know if anyone has forgotten that war! I definitely havent. Yay for remembering, its so so so important. It was always a dream of mine to go the holocaust museum in washington DC and I went in December, it was INCREDIBLE. Unfortunately though, there are always going to be people who are ignorant and therefore are racist, fascist and prejudiced. I think we all as individuals have to work in our own lives to eradicate that thinking and ensure that our children are the same.

I went there in Sep 2001, one of the most powerful museums I have ever visited. At the end I couldn't help but cry, and that doesn't happen a lot with me. I thought I had pretty much seen al the horrific images and heard all the horrific stories but to be confronted with them all at once and that big hall with all the photo's of families and people who were killed in the war, that was just overpowering. I had no idea it would affect me in that way.

well while i take your point cille, but i think that if people really had forgotten WWII then fascism woukld be much greater than it is at present...and I know that it is on the rise again.....but everytime it seems to make a large gain, people always stand back and say 'remeber germany, remember italy'.....such as the time of the last presidential election in france when Le Pen made 17% of the poll....on the second poll, literally hundereds of thousands came out to vote against fascism, and i think an appeal to the memory of the last war played a major role in that....i think that if we can keep the memory of atrocity alive, then fascism will always be kept on the margins where it belongs

i guess you're right... a lot of people are aware of what history can teach us.

i just can't help thinking that maybe we haven't changed the way of living that breeds fascism and the likes. of course it's really hard to think of a way to really change that effectively because fascism seems to be a symptom of multiple factors in society; social, psychological, educational, economical, religious, etc etc etc.

hehe, wheels, you're absolutely right... hi fellow weirdos!! *waving at screen*

Her profile says researcher/reporter, Shaun.... I wondered that too. I also try to stamp out fascism and intolerance and oppression in my line of work-- I'm a social worker (that's right-- bleeding-heart-liberal-leftist-leaning-tree-huggin'-social-w orker-- that's me!) well as we speak i'm on a study break, but i hope eventually to qualify as an academic historian and fight against the kind of revisionist nonsense that certain far right historians are churning out these days - such as extreme post-modernists - in a bid to legitimise extremism so i guess we're all in the same boat, or soon will be! we rule!
