Wow. Phenomenal show. All of "O" up to Eskimo, performed acoustic. Whole band throughout. Started with a song I hadn't heard...top notch song. Lisa sang another song I hadn't heard, a capella, perfect, beautiful. Lonely Soldier, Baby Sister, Blowers Daughter II. I'm thinking that Insane is one of his best songs. Viv performed a Rufus Wainright song solo in her wonderful style. The first set ended with Herbie Hancock joining on keyboards. Herbie asked them to record with him yesterday, and they invited him to tonight's show. With Herbie on keys, Damien and Lisa shared "Don't Explain". Because of the way the encore ended, I don't really remember what was in there, though I think that's where something rolled into Be My Husband. Hallelujah was in there too. Herbie came out and Lisa sang a song I should know but don't. He added lots of beautiful keyboard improve throughout the song, sometimes playing with Lisa's timing. That rolled into this jam that included Damien scat singing riffs that Herbie played on keys, with part of "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", all of Cheers Darlin', some of Glory Box, Damo and Lisa singing imitating saxaphones, an all out straight-ahead jazz jam, and finally Tomo, Shane, and Herbie running the train right to the end in a blues rock jam with Damien throwing in funk riffs on an electric guitar. Like I said...wow |

That was my first Damien Rice show and all I have to say is f**kING
AMAZING....by far the best live performance I have ever seen! And 3 hours long??? Talk about getting your money's worth!!! Also heard a rumor that noah wylie was in the house....and could have sworn i saw jennifer love hewitt? Apparently Damien brings the stars out. But then again I could have just been delirious from the RIDICULOUS set I was witnessing! |

I agree. Every telling of the experience will pale in comparison to the
actual event. Best show ever, times two. |

Words cannot possibly capture a satisfactory description of tonight's show. It left almost all of us speechless. To fill in a gap or two [secondary] setlist: Tongue Volcano Older Chests Woman Like a Man - Damien broke a string during the song, so while it was being replaced off-stage, Lisa sang this incredibly beautiful and sad song that I do not know (song by Lisa) After Lisa's solo, someone asked Damien to play "A new one" and Damien said, "Play a new one? No." He then decided the band was going to play "THen Go" which Tomo started, but Lisa and Vyvienne told Damien they couldn't do that one for some reason, so then Damien started playing... Insane Amie Lonely Soldier Baby Sister Cannonball Blower's Daughter Pt. 2 The Professor & la Fille Danse (Vyvienne cover of Rufus Wainright) - I think it's called "Vibrate" - #Ian# knows (Damien song) - Damo told a story before this song - something about staying with a friend in England and feeling like he was losing the friendship Eskimo I Remember -> Be My Husband (jam w/ HERBIE HANCOCK) - I think this was an actual song, not a jam - I believe, as someone posted earlier, it was called "Don't Explain" and it was great. Damien was reading the lyrics from a piece of paper he held on his knee and Shane had sheet music on a music stand for this one Encore: Delicate Cold Water -> Hallelujah Blower's Daughter (FORTY-MINUTE JAM w/ HERBIE HANCOCK) - As mentioned earlier this jam included parts of Still haven't Found what I'm looking for and Glorybox and all of Cheers Darlin it was absolutely unbelievable |

That was the most unbelievable concert experience of my life. If there were more words to describe it I would use them… but honestly… there is nothing more to say.<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /> |

Yep, "Don't Explain" was the first song they did with Herbie. Billie Holiday made that song...very dark, sad song. REAL interesting the way they sang it, just beautiful. Could that be the song they recorded? Is it possible? I saw Angela McClusky perform it at the Troubadour back when she was lead of the Wild Colonials. Angela sings it Billie's way...sad, slow, with all the pain. The other song that seems to be new had a lyric about a "grey, grey room". Great rhythm and pace to that song, real standout. I've been to some amazing shows at the Troubadour....last night was the best. |

PS: that song about a "grey, grey room" is surprisingly enough called 'Grey Room'. Not surprising at all. Would have been if he'd called it "Dark Canvas". I don't assume a title until I've confirmed it. |

I've lurked on this forum for ages so I hopeno onethinks it's rude of me to post now just to say that I'm so glad this show was recorded. It sounds like such an amazing set, and the fact that it was at The Troubador makes it all the more special, and my god the jam at the end...I'm so looking forwardto hearing it if it's made available so thank you so much to whoever recorded it

I agree wholeheartedly. :-) Quote:
I'm almost positive that the Encore jam started off with an extemely slow version of Bob Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thum's Blues". As I was sitting there I knew the lyrics from somewhere, and I know for a fact that that portion ended with Lisa singing, "I'm going back to New Yor City, I do believe I've had enough". Then all the improvising started with the Herbie & Damien, as well as the "Haven't found what I'm looking for" and "Glory Box" Jesus....I have never been so satisfied with a show I had such high expectations for. BLOWN AWAY!! I'm still reeling. It was great meeting all you Eskimo folks as well. -Greg |

what an amazing show...anyone who missed this night missed a truly inspiring performance. Thanks to Damien, Lisa and the whole crew. Met Damien earlier in the day...one of the most genuine people I have ever had the privelege of talking to...and a man of his word...thanks Damien.

Hi. I don't post to message boards often, but last
night's show is enough to bring me out of my shell for a little bit. Yes, the setlist explains a lot of the show, but there are so many other moments to remember (and I'm already forgetting them). Maybe together we can remember more? This is probably a selfish post to get myself to write things down now, but hopefully some of you will have things to add. Thanks. - JJ - The thing that stands out the most is how happy each band member seemed to be - especially during the Herbie sit ins. Artists having fun in front of a crowd is an easy theme for the evening. I've seen Damien and band a handful of times, but I've never seen all of them smile as much as they did last night. - Damien mentioned the set was going to be slightly unplugged as they had just brought the equipment to do this song (Blower's Daughter) on the TV show (Leno). No distortion mic or guitar pedals. - Then Go. They were about to start it and Lisa whispered something to Damien and he indicated no and she (ever so shyly) mentioned she didn't want to bogart the show as she had just sung a song the song before they were about to play it. - Damien and Lisa scatting something vocally and Herbie mimicking it on the piano. Amazing. (During the last song/jam.) - Damien singing off mic Hallelujah. Absolutely gorgeous. - Damien drumming his guitar and singing into it on I Remember/Be My Husband. - Vyvienne played the piano part to Cold Water after Damien asked Herbie's permission so sweetly to use his piano. - The entire show had this feel to it like you were watching something you'd never forget - especially towards the end were you felt like somehow you had been given a peep-hole to one of your favorite artists rehearsal sessions. (That isn't meant to mean that the performance wasn't perfect - it was beyond perfect in so many ways. I just mean that there was an improvisational element to it was similar that of crashing a band practice. Very wonderful and something I'll always feel grateful to have witnessed.) - Lisa was out in the crowd for the opener near the bar and everyone was respectful and let her be and enjoy the set. Very cool crowd at this show. - The crowd really was great. Very small venue - practically an unadvertised fan only attendance. Some out of tune loud sing-alongs from a few of my neighbors during some songs, but their enthusiasm for the show made up for the fact that if this was taped - they may not be so happy with their additions to the Lisa and Damien vocals. I know most of the words to the songs too, but I know those around me did not pay to hear me sing. That being said - I was sober (as I didn't want to miss a thing) and the folks next to me were truly fans - just a little loud and off pitch at times and maybe a little more bold after a shot or two. So, no worries. Really truly a fantastic crowd. Oh no. This is all I can remember right now. See, I need help. Thanks in advance. - JJ |
