Hey
This was the first time i have seen him live and i found it amazing! He Really rocked me out for the first few songs but there were a few songs lacking that special something he usually has in the middle. It picked up however, and he started doing the more popular songs. i was right up the front and he asked what we wanted to hear and i shouted up the professor cause its like my favourite song and he looked at me and said ok and he did it so i was very pleased with that!!! :-) Fionn Regan and Pedestrian were also very very good, would recommend them to anybody. Damien, im not worthy!

fionn reagan was horrible on Tuesday night, better on Wednesday night but still not great...the only good thing about his set was his drummer because he looked like an animal :P

Here's the full setlists for both nights, I took them down as they were being played but there was two or three songs played over the two nights that were getting their first performances. On a whole I'd tend to agree in saying that the first night wasn't as tight as the second night. I reckon that if the band had played the same quality show both nights no-one would have been really able to argue with the quality of the performances. The reason the first show will take a bit of a beating is that the second show was the kind of performance that you dream of seeing once every two or three years. The first night was somewhat held back by the positioning of the band onstage too, they were standing in a line that was placed a bit too far back on the stage, on the second night they were all dotted about the stage along with about fifty candles and some incense, which made it feel a bit more spontaneous and less like a zoo. Also the way the second show started was nice, with the band coming on in increments, it sort of slowed the whole thing down, having a seven-piece ensemble appear out of nowhere was weird on the first night.
The real treats over the two nights were things like hearing Lisa sing Nine Crimes, she's added new vocal parts to it too, and they sound absolutely great. Coconut Skins now has drum, bass and electric guitar parts to it and they really are fantastic, the second night it sort of took on a more paced feel and Damien's vocals for it were quite strong. Is That It My Friend? is a genuinely fantastic song, and I would say is probably in the vein of Cheers Darlin', but the fact that it's been hoarded away for so long is a crime. The version of Volcano on the second night was so tight it almost sounded like a studio recording, I mean it was literally perfect. The best part of both shows overall was hearing Lisa play a song... She was amazing. Just amazing... Anyway, here's the setlists; Tuesday 29th August 01. I Remember 02. Rootless Tree 03. Delicate 04. Me, My Yoke And I 05. Woman Like A Man 06. Nine Crimes 07. Insane 08. Is That It My Friend? 09. Accidental Babies 10. Volcano 11. The Blower's Daughter 12. Older Chests 13. Coconut Skins 14. (Violin Piece By Cora) 15. The Professor & Babylon & Child, Man, Silly Dog & La Fille Danse -------------------- 16. The Blower's Daughter Part II 17. Eskimo 18. Cold Water Wednesday 30th August 01. The Blower's Daughter Part II (Solo) 02. Amie & Sex Change (Solo) 03. The Professor & La Fille Danse (With Lisa & Vyvienne) 04. Volcano (With Lisa, Vyvienne, Shane & Tomo) 05. Me, My Yoke And I (With Full Band) 06. Old Tomatos & Delicate 07. Woman Like A Man 08. Nine Crimes (Longer Version With A Jam At The End) 09. Cheers Darlin' 10. Coconut Skins 11. Eskimo -------------------- 12. Accidental Babies 13. Cannonball 14. Rat In The Grain 15. (New Song By Lisa) 16. (Piece By Vyvienne & Cora) 17. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part I (Vyv On The Rhodes) 18. (New Song By Full Band With Damien & Shane Playing Cowbells) 19. Rootless Tree 20. The Blower's Daughter 21. I Remember (Second Half)

Anyone remember the line in accidental babies that seemed to be thrown in on the spur of the moment, cause I haven't heard it in any other versions of the song. Went something like:
well you held me like a lover, sweaty hands and my foot in the appropriate place, **** this bit: between her legs and telling her you're looking for her soul!!! **** or something like that? That was on Tuesday! Or maybe I got the songs mixed up!! |

That was part of Coconut Skins, but you're right, he has changed part of the second verse of Accidental Babies from what it used to be... Just not to that.
And yeah, I was the one who was cool/sad enough to turn up frighteningly early for both shows. But then it kinda paid off, because the band recognised me from the first night and I was talking to Tomo and Vyv during the day, and they were really cool, and Lisa gave me a big charming smile when she came out on stage on wednesday, and I believe I had either a heart attack or skin failure, which was an experience in itself. I don't think the cowbell song was a cover, It felt like something Damien would write, and it seems a bit mad to put in all that extra effort just to cover a song.

but this is my theory.. i think he has gems like that one tucked away that he's never played (or only played once in a crowd obviously devoid of any real tapers) that no one has heard, and he's really going to surprise everyody with the new album.. or maybe even at electric picnic i got to hear a bit of the cowbell song! a very kind person called me on their cell phone while they were playing it i'm very happy about that.. i thought it had to be a brand new song i didn't recognize it at all.. |

the Cora Venus Lunny piece from the first night is Bach - the Courante (i think) from the Cello Suite in G. she played a few movements from it in her solo set at EP as well. i felt bad that he put her on the spot like that on the Tues night gig - was talking to her on Sunday night at Big Tree and commiserated with her about it. Wednesday night was definitely better than Tues - hadnt heard Nine Crimes before and i love it. Volcano was amazing that night also. saw him performing all over the EP weekend and his headline set especially was fantastic - crowd was amazing i thought!

Yeah, he's a good guy. That 'penny in the slot' song is really pretty. I was talking to him over the weekend,
he doesn't get a day off until march... which is tough going.

He just said that he had a lot of label pressure to tour the entire world before they'd help him out with any promotion, and that when he's not playing he gets about 20 phonecalls and 100 emails a day, all about business. It really made me realise why most musicians couldn't give a toss about trying to appease people, it's pretty hard to do the whole music business thing and try to find time for personal pleasures like eating and sleeping.
