Yup, it's an Islamic country (but a harmonious one; there are Malay (mostly Muslims), Chinese and Indian plus Sikh people thanks to colonial history).

Not like it's not practised here though, just secretly. I mean, gambling is forbidden under Islam, but we do have one casino resort.

P.S. Sorry for late reply, I'm supposed to be working haha

I wouldn't call it "harmonious" if they easily ban homosexual artists and great, controversial stuff like David Slade's recent film "Hard candy" (also banned in Malaysia, China etc.). That's a bit like calling the German Democratic Republic (GDR) a "harmonious" state. I think, y'all get a new government.

Picked up Poses the other day after hearing so much about him, but not overly impressed as yet. Are the other albums better or is this as good as it gets?

I like his debut (1998) even more. Although I wasn't too impressed with Want One/Want Two generally seen, apart from a handful of songs (might have to listen to it on another place, more complex stuff).

Well, it's "harmonious" in the sense that the country does not support terrorism
But I understand your chagrin. Thing is, the religion is so integral a part of the Malay culture, the population of which is the largest in the country, while homosexuality is not. In fact, many are mistaken that homosexuality is as much cultural as biological.

Well, I dunno..."terrorism" is a word that can be stretched. Isn't it a form of terrorism as well, if the leaders of a country ban and censor almost everything and treat their citizens like children? Isn't it terroristic, if a big group of people in a country tries to attack minorities/distinctions (homosexuals etc.)? I mean an attack on true love, humanity.

I bet there are far more secret homosexuals in Malaysia than you can imagine, it would be just soo unnatural if there aren't any. They might be just too scared to reveal the truth. Some men may lead a heterosexual life now with wife and kids only to "hide", it's not unusal (and yet sad). What would a homosexual get in your country if he opens up?

In fact, many are mistaken that homosexuality is as much cultural as biological.

What do you mean by that?Oh, and don't get me wrong, I'm not 'attacking' (offending) you or anything, just wanna ask.

I agree with the semantic part of your post; I take terrorism as there being no condoning of life-threatening activities under the guise of Islam. Just goes to show again how significant a role language plays in our lives haha (I remembered reading how UN stayed its hand in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict because Israel's attack did not amount in severity to certain pre-determined categories?)

"In fact, many are mistaken that homosexuality is as much cultural as biological" Oppss.. sorry! What I wanted to write was "Homosexuality is not so much cultural as biological" Sorry! Was typing the post during work speed was the essence hehe. I mean, many hold that homosexuality is cultural, i.e. a practice of a particular culture (Greeks, dutch etc.). Reducing it to merely a practice means one has the choice NOT to practise it as much as practising it, thus grouping it along with cannibalism, Indian's sati, the Chinese's giving of angpows, etc. Reasoning thus deprives the biological factor from homosexuality, which I think is unfair. And since it is not so much cultural as biological, a human condition rather than culture-specific, I do not doubt closeted homosexuals are everywhere in our country some might have come out, who knows? Just that in the media they are not really granted a voice. But recently our media have been showcasing the plights of the transgendered so we're slowly opening up (plus with the onset of technology and the Internet, I doubt our censorship board can do anything haha).

I'm sorry this is so long! I think our censorship board pales in extermity compared to China's.

let it grow on you. on 'poses' i love especially 'in a graveyard', 'rebel prince', 'cigarettes and chocolate milk' and 'one man guy'.

his masterpiece, however, is want 1 & 2 imo. - esp. want 1. this means i love 60 % of what's on those albums, and the rest i don't care about much. Rufus is an excellent songwriter, but sometimes he goes a bit too far with streamlining his arrangements. again, imo.
I don't like his debut much for some reason; it bores and annoys me too much.

I love some of his on stage comments. for instance, at Roskilde festival he described axl rose's head as a 'concentration camp for hair'. ugh!

Look at him there, multi-tasking like a real lady (I for one couldn't play a single note straight if somebody interrupts me like that)

Listened to it again this morning and still only feeling "meh" about it. Poses is easily the best track. I dunno, I was expecting it to maybe be more theatrical or something (based on what I'd heard about him).

if you're looking for drama, go for the want albums - maybe esp. want 2 - or his debut. His debut is very cabaret'ish.

And don't believe Cille (there's no such thing as an individual opinion!), ClosingDoors, the debut is great, it takes a while til it grows. Just like this here. *porn breather*

well, i think his voice sounded so strained back then, it annoys me to listen to it after quite a short while.

I couldn't listen to it all day long either, but when i grab it after a couple of months it's beautiful again.

I wanna marry the part in "Baby" where he sings "If you bring along your needles, then I'll bring my sharpened pencils, and draw one more comic tragedy".
