He wrote a song called Closer for the movie. Not in the film of course. Did it ever surface?

Imho Closer is one of Damien's weakest songs... but if you bear in mind it was written for a raunchy scene in a striptease club

actually, they ended up using The Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up instead, right? (or am I making this up??)

I always liked it too but I do think to fully appreciate it you have to look at it as a parody of the kind of songs you'd hear in a strip-club. I still maintain that "Accidental Babies" was also a song that was written for "Closer".

First and foremost it's the strong correlation of the lyrics (for example-perhaps the most infamous scene is the one where Larry grills Anna about whether she prefers sex with Dan) but also look at how perfectly it fits into the timeline:

The first time I met Damien (April 22, 2004) I asked him about a number of things including new songs he was writing. He told me he'd been writing not just for the next album but also for film. The Paste magazine interview conducted during one of his two NYC Beacon Theatre gigs (either a week before or roughly two weeks after I spoke with him, but not released until several months later in July with an August cover date) confirms it in even more specificity:

"If Rice is surprised by the new life he’s created for himself, he should be. Especially considering how unlikely it is that he’d be fielding phone calls from the likes of filmmaker Mike Nichols, who wants the singer to create music for his forthcoming project, Closer. (Needless to say, Rice promptly accepted.)"

The first time Damo played "Accidental Babies" was on July 1, 2004 at the Grafton St. HMV music store and although several here recorded it, he'd asked that it not be leaked because it was a song he definitely planned on putting out.

The film of "Closer" was released 6 months later.
