Those looking for a left-of-the-dial holiday treat need search no further: Like its older sibling, Maybe This Christmas, this Yuletide collection offers new spins on old chestnuts and original compositions that evoke seasonal splendor. In the former category, "O Holy Night," rendered in a spare, piano-led arrangement by Avril Lavigne and Chantal Kreviazuk, spotlights the skater-girl's sweet soprano and the wispy chanteuse's huskier delivery. Martina Sorbara's lovely, romantic "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" also takes its subject seriously, while Oh Susanna's roadhouse-gospel rendition of "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and the Flaming Lips' quirky "White Christmas" get more creative. The originals do the same -- highlights include the Barenaked Ladies' wryly humorous "Green Christmas," reprised from The Grinch soundtrack; Badly Drawn Boy's "Donna & Blitzen," reprised from About a Boy; "Christmas Song," an acoustic pearl from the Dave Matthews Band's debut; and especially Rufus Wainwright's lush "Spotlight on Christmas." Somewhere in between is Damien Rice collaborator Lisa Hannigan's a cappella "Silent Night," where she applies new, darker-hued lyrics to a familiar melody. With a portion of the proceeds going to the Marine Toys for Tots organization, Maybe This Christmas, Too honors the season's spirit as much as it does its music. Lydia Vanderloo

All Music Guide
Maybe This Christmas, Too is the second installment in Nettwerk's Christmas album series and again collects some of indie rock's best and modern rock chart-toppers for an enjoyable holiday listen. Artists like Rilo Kiley, Guster, and the Be Good Tanyas go against tradition to deliver their own Christmas carols. Keeping with such a formula, Rufus Wainwright's "Spotlight on Christmas," which was exclusively recorded for this compilation, is classic chamber pop with a warm spirit. Adult contemporary chanteuse Chantal Kreviazuk hooks up with a fellow Canadian, punk dollface Avril Lavigne, for their own version of "O Holy Night," while the Flaming Lips get a little bit funky on "White Christmas." Maybe This Christmas, Too will appeal to both casual and die-hard music fans of all ages. Like the music, the artwork done by Cosmic Debris (Emily the Strange, Oopsy Daisy) is equally fetching. A portion of the proceeds made from Maybe This Christmas, Too once again went to Toys for Tots, a charity supported by the U.S. Marine Corps. MacKenzie WilsonEdited by: JAKE
