Don't be sorry... it takes a lot of courage to voice your opinion and to stick by it... even if some people may not understand where you are coming from...

I dont usually get into these things but and Im probably gonna trip myself up here but i'll give this a go. Its too vague a statement to say that "whats right and wrong is definied by society". Because then you have to ask who's society? (I dont mean to keep using the war type examples over but .....) Some societies at the time, believed it was fine for British, Spanish and French invaders to colonise whole countries and rape them of their nationality, and inforce their beliefs, laws and cultures upon them. Where's as now thosecountries go to war to protect the same type of countries they fought to'acquire' years ago. Why have those same countries general views changed?I believe ithas to be down to the education of people and the civilisation as a whole being improved. I dont think that the word "right" (in terms of morally acceptable) is a definite thing. It is what is 'considered' fair and moral, and that is governed bywhat you believe to be good. Whereas, 'right' and 'wrong' in terms of the law or intitlements are a definite thing. But there can be influences that hinder your ability to make the unbiased call as an individual,on whats right and wrong (in terms of specific issues) due to past expierences. Thats why "right and wrong"should be a general perception. The more controversial the issue the more the generalperception will vary. Maybe thequestion "whats right and wrong" is too vague...?? (Hope i've made some sense!! Ohh my head hurts!!.....)

This whole debate isn't new to mankind. Instead of reinventing the wheel, maybe you could start by searching the web for course material of a philosophy 101 course, where the discussion of ethics usually takes place. The multitude of arguments is rather well defined and systematically explored. It being systematic prevents you from getting a headache
Here's the kind of thing I was thinking of: Intro to ethics |

Im not that interested in it but thanks anyway Ang! I had a class in college last year that was all about the engineering code of ethics and Christ it was the most mind-numbingly boring subject i've ever had the misfortune to have to sit through!! Dont want togo down that road again!(Although maybe that was the lecturers fault) No offense intended to anyone here who does find all this interesting, its just not for me.

Ha, ha! Me neither! I thought of pointing it out for a long time (to kavu478, primarily), but was worried I'd get dragged into the discussion.
You can also apply mathematical logic to the moral dilemma argument and argue it through to its conclusion. I vaguely remember we did several of those as an exercise in college. |

To be honest, I've never really cared about this type of thing either. I was bored out of my mind until I saw the bigger picture. The goal of this topic wasn't to find the one defining answer but to try and get people to at least think of things for a second. I appreciate all the feedback that everyone has given me... |
