Default Guess who I bumped into last night?!

Last night (Wednesday) I went to see Ray LaMontagne at the Union Chapel in London . It was a truly, truly amazing gig - Ray on his own singing to a beautifully quiet audience in an awesome venue. It was one of those magical evenings where every song sends shivers up your spine.

Anyway I hung around afterwards, managed to get Ray to sign my CD and was skipping out the Union Chapel (hey - Ray had just signed my CD and sung the most heartachingly powerful songs for 2 hours) when who do I notice on the steps but... Vyvienne Long!

I was just trying to (subtley) explain who she was to my girlfriend when I notice Lisa standing next to her! At this point I'm sarting to get very ... excited (not in a pervy way thank you!) when I notice that the group of 6 or 7 people are in fact the band and the man my girlfriend and I just walked past is Damo!

At this point I'm just dumb-struck!

After 30 seconds of "should-I-go-and-ask-for-their-autographs-'cos-its-not-their-concert)" type thoughts I finally pluck up the courage. However as I wander over and politely wait before interupting their conversation - the group head back inside. Not wanting to shamelessly run after them I quickly 'grab' Shane and Tomo and ask them for their autographs. After quickly clarifying that I did realise they weren't playing tonight and that I did realise who they were we had a very nice little chat.

I'm afraid I'm terrible at recounting conversations but the general gist was:
Me: So, when are you guys going to come and play here in London?
Them: Not sure - think January or March
Me: Please play somehwere small and intimate like this.
Them: We'd love to but that's not our decision unfortunately.
Me: But you should come here soon - the new album is amazing. And anyway, you've been in the US too much recently.
Them: We've been in Ireland finishing the album!
Me: It's been worth the wait - are you really proud of it [stupid question I know!]?
Them: YES!
Me: What you doing in London
Them: Jools Holland etc.
Me: Did you see tonight's Ray concert [another stupid question - they're standing on the steps outside the gig!]?
Them: Yes - it's a lovely venue.
Me: Of course - you've played here before.
Then followed a final plea for them to come and play somewhere like the Union Chapel in London (with a suggestion Tomo throws an artistic tantrum if his demands aren't met), a request for their autographs (on my Ray ticket!), and grovelling thanks for them talking/being so nice to me. Shake hands and goodbye.

Came away convinced that they are two of the loveliest guys in the world, chuffed that they all like Ray (who along with Damo, makes the muisic that keep the world turning), and with a written promise from Tomo: "Simon - see you in March-ish".

Spent the bus journey home jibbering like an idiot too my girlfriend and unable to take the smile off my face. ...And also wondering whether Damo, the band and Ray were stood at the bar having a drink and chatting about the pressures of 'second album syndrome"!

What if you ask someone if they want your autograph, that's always good for a laugh. Photo's are better though.

Can you describe briefly the introduction and if any comments were made about each others music...I find it intriguing what artists think of other artists... that's how I got into Radiohead... interestingly enough...because Damien said one of his favorite songs is 'Pyramid Song'.

Well, after I stopped gushing to Damien about how much I adored him..hehe, my friend came over and said, Damien do you know Ray. He said no, so we walked over and said, Damien..Ray, Ray...Damien, and I think they shook hands. Then Ray commented to Damien that he loved the album...that it was great! Damien said thanks and asked Ray if he had been out in the countryside yet....Ray said no...and Damo said, he'd love to take him out and show him around...so Damien got Ray's number on his little Red cell phone. (Obviously, don't know if that actually happened) In the meanwhile, I was just awe struck, listening to them talk and being in both their presence...legends!

Damien didn't go to Ray's show that night, he was just there hanging out with some of his friends. I spoke to Damien & his friends again outside the Village when everyone was having a smoke...about being over on holiday etc.

I think that pretty much sums it up...it was an amazing night all around, Ray gave a brilliant performance that night as well.
