What an impossible thread!
I have too many favourite songs!
Im just gonna pick what I'm listening to right now!
"No Place to Hide" - Declan O' Rourke
Such a sweet sweet simple gorgeous song, one of those songs that can tell an amazing story with just a few words!
Precious lyrics and a beautiful melody!
Everyone should check it out!

"He had nothing left to lose, just his lonliness and pain"

"She lay awake now in the darkness, where an old piano glistened in the night/he dreamt he found a little boat and sailed away upon the tide"

Speaking of Declan, here is another gorgeous line from his track Galileo (someone like you)

"who puts the rainbow in the sky, who lights the stars at night, who dreamt up someone so divine, someone like you and made them mine"

WOW!

i'm so pleased to hear people mentioning Jeff Buckley, songs like 'Satisfied Mind' 'Lover you should have come over' 'forget her' and obviously 'hallelujah' are fantastic.

but as others have already said, picking a single song is far too difficult, so instead i'll just list a few great ones that spring to mind (in no particular order)

1. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
2. Bob Dylan - I Shall be released
3. Santana - Samba Pa Ti
4. Coldplay - Swallowed in the sea
5. Damien Rice - Older Chests
6. David Gray - Birds without wings
7. The beatles - while my guitar gently weeps
8. Eric Clapton - Tears in heaven
9. Jason Mraz - You and I both (acoustic)
10. Keane - She has no time
11. Neil Young - My my, hey hey
12. Oasis - Live forever
13. Radiohead - Karma Police
14. The Smiths - The boy with the thorn in his side
15. Stereophonics - 1000 trees

bear in mind, these are ones that i can just think of, off the top of my head

I can't stop talking by NoMeansNO

I'll be back with more, but at the moment nothing beats that bass riff and the lyrics/vocals:

keep myself awake at night
I try to stop, but I can't fight
That voice that whispers ceaselessty
The one that only talks to me
It tells me what I have to fear
It spits its venom in my ear
It calculates and carefully
Enumerates its strategies
Round and round its loves and hates
It endlessly reiterates
It never stops, I've never heard
The silence of that final word

But I've got to stop talking, I can't stop talking
There is no stopping a brain that keeps talking
I know it's not healthy, I know it's not true
I don't even know who I'm talking to
But I can't stop talking, I've got to stop talking
All night and all day I have something to say
I drone on and on, though I know it's not true
I've got to stop talking, I'm not talking to you

The truth around my tongue is curled
A chain of words that binds the world
In a fever, all I
Is captured in my commentary
The why, the who, the where, the when
Let me repeat them all agai n
And then again my voice will sing
The praises of it's babbling
The arguments that I dissect
Are lucid, cogent and correct
And if you foolishly object
I'll Gram each word back down you neck

[Chorus]

If I'm the talker, here's the thing -
Just who the hell is listening?
And if I am not tongue but ears
Then whos voice is it that I hear?
I swallow, choke, and clear my throat
Here comes another anecdote
A narrative of restlessness
Of what's been done and what is next
Does it love me, does it not?
Will this seduction never stop?
Hear the clacking parrot's beak
That speaks and speaks and speaks and speaks

Of course what I meant to say is one of the songs that means the most to me is swordfishtrombones by Tom Waits

"Now some say he's doing the obituary mambo
Now some say that he's hanging on the wall
Perhaps this yarn's the only thing that holds this man together
Some say he was never here at all"

It would have to be a Jeff Buckley song. Either "Grace" or "Hallelujah".

Other than those, some of my favorite songs are:
* The Veils - Lavinia
* Antony And The Johnsons - Blue Angel
* Bright Eyes - Easy/Luck/Free
* Carrie Tree - Early Morning Train Ride
* Damien Rice - I Remember
* David Gray - Please Forgive Me
* Emiliana Torrini - Lifesaver
* Goldfrapp - Lovely Head
* I Am Kloot - The Same Deep Water
* Muse - Blackout
* Radiohead - Exit Music
* Ray LaMontagne - All The Wild Horses
* Rufus Wainwright - Poses
* Ryan Adams - Sylvia Plath
* The Veils - The Valleys Of New Orleans
* Tom McRae - Ghost Of A Shark
* Tori Amos - Precious Things

I love making lists =)
