I cant take my eyes of you
Ive always wondered about these lyrics. They seem so out of place with damiens normal, uncommercial lyrics.
I cant help feeling they are mocking love songs or something, especially because of the last line. What do you think? EDIT: I just found this on damienrice.com board, its preety cool, talking about his uncommercial side. "He learned to play the guitar after one of his sisters boyfriends played the guitar, and he got into it then. He was into fishing before. Interesting story about his education- my old guitar teacher told me a story about another music teacher he knows that was in his class at college. They had to do a composition and had weeks to do it. They all previewed theirs the day before, but Damo had nothing to show for it. So he went out that night and recorded street noises- dogs barking, babies crying, couples shouting, cars, etc....and handed that in as his composition. Apparently the class were stunned silent and the teacher didn't know what to say" Last edited by Iwasatabarwiththis, lady; 01-15-2006 at 12:23 AM. |

Oh you mean the poster on DR.com
But presumably s/he was Irish if in school with Damien... so college would mean 3rd level... If they meant school... well I don't know any schools that get classes to compose music... leaving cert is very different to a-levels.

As I said Leaving Cert is very different to a-levels.
I don't think it is mocking love songs... I never thought of it as that commercial.

i don't see it as commercial because I believe what he said about not intending to sell more than a thousand copies or whatever exactly he said. His music , whether one song or not, is bound to appeal to the masses. I live in America and most people that I know who found out about Damien was because of the Blower's Daughter and its been discussed on this forum before, but they think it is a good love song...such as the discussion as to whether to use it for a wedding or not a couple months back.
When I listen to it, I think those lines are so powerful. The repetition, the simplicity. He doesn't have any catchy line after rhyming with it. It is something everyone can relate to, something he obviously went through, but in my eyes its so broad that a lot of people experience that emotion and you can't blame him for captivating it in a song. I like it. As for the last line, I think he is just being overly realistic and cynical. Have you ever been in the same situation over and over with the opposite sex and you always come out okay in the long run? I have. You get over it and when he says, "til I find somebody new." I think he is just being cynical and realistic. that is just my take on it though. interesting about his composition if it is true. no reason not to believe it in my eyes. |

Hmm... I'm kinda divided. On the surface, it does seem kind of commercial. But when you think about it, was Damien Rice really sitting there, writing a beautiful love song, and he started thinking "Hey, I know! I should use this line to make a cynical comment about the commercialism of most love songs these days?"
I think it probably just seemed right to him at the time. We probably shouldn't try to probe into an artist's mind, cos half the time they don't know why they write what they do either! |
