Default riddle of the day (a good way to win a free beer)

someone told this to me at work tonight:

You and two of your friends go to a hotel to rent a room. The room is $30 (or euro or pounds or whatever). You each pay $10. After the bellhop takes your bags up to the room, the front desk clerk realizes she overcharged $5 for the room and returns the difference. The bellhop keeps $2 as tip, and you each get back $1. So you each paid $9, and $9 x 3 people is $27, and $30-$27 is $3. But remember, the bellhop only kept $2. Where did the extra dollar go?

hmm..........can't work that one out......the front desk clerk stole it?

Surely though it all adds up........the bellhop keeps $2 and everyone else gets $1 (1 x $3) - add that together and that equals $5!

that's a good one,

there is no extra dollar, you don't need to add on 3 to make 30. because she over priced. the actual price was 25, therefore you only need to take 2 from 27. which is what she did. rather than ADD 3 to make 30.

does that mean i have to concoct a new riddle? i don't know if i know any.

Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.

Is the answer hungry by any chance?

Ok....A worm is at the bottm of a 40ft hole. It can crawl upwards at a rate of 4ft in one day, but at night slips back 3ft. How long does it take to crawl out of the hole?

I'd say 36 days because he doesn't slip back anymore at the last day...

On my way to Vienna about two years back I got to know two English guys, they told me this riddle. But I think I heard it in a movie as well.

what is more powerful than god
more evil than the devil
the rich need it
the poor have it
and if you eat it
then you will die

Nope...not 36 days either. Good riddle you've set - will try to fathom it out.

Is it not 37 days for the same reason? Not that I'm sad enough to have just sat here with a piece of paper and worked it all out or anything...

Excellent....37 days it is (not off course that you were sad enought to sit etc. etc.). As you got it right, I think you now have to try and set one.

Hadn't we better wait to check that someone got the answer to PenguinBoy's riddle right first? It'd just be confusing to have even more riddles flying around at the same time. No, I'm not stalling, honestly

Hmm, fair enough then, I guess I'd better just get on with it! I can't think of any good riddles, unfortunately, so you'll probably get this answer to this one pretty quickly:

Johnny's mother had three children. The first was called April. The second was called May. What was the third child called?

Because Poe wrote on both?

Why are 1989 pound coins worth more than 1987 pound coins?

Because if you have 1989 pound coins you have £1,989 as opposed to £1,987?

Good call on the Poe answer, it wasn't what I had in mind, but it works.

I think this is the official answer to the missing dollar riddle (but the other one works too). I found it on the internet:

The following night two friends check into the same motel. Once again the clerk charges them $30, or $15 per person. After the clerk remembers the total rate is only $25 he sends the bellhop upstairs with five $1 bills to pay the two friends back. The bellhop knows he got away with larceny once so he tries it again. But this time he pockets $3 and returns $2 to the hotel guests ($1 per guest). So each of the two guests got $1 back from their original $15. Therefore each paid $14 which is a total payment of $28 for the room. Now the bellhop has $3, the guests paid $28, for a total of $31....THERE'S THE MISSING DOLLAR!!!!

uhmm...this "solution" lost me...i think i'll go with what penguin said.

my turn: The man who invented it doesn't want it. The man who bought it doesn't need it. The man who needs it doesn't know it. What is it?
