May 24th - Press Release…Press Release…

TICKETS GO ON SALE TODAY FOR MAJOR CONCERT AGAINST BUSH'S WAR - FEATURING TOP IRISH MUSCIANS Christy Moore and Damian Rice

Contact : Richard Boyd Barrett 087-6329511

8,500 tickets go on sale across the country today for a major concert in the Point Depot on June 19th where top Irish Musicians will perform as part of the build-up to the protests against US President George Bush.

The concert titled "When Bush Comes to Shove" will feature Christy Moore, Damien Rice, Mary Black, Kila, The Revs, Katell Keineg & comedy with Barry Murphy (Après Match).

Saturday 19th June – The Point Depot, Dublin. (Doors Open – 5.30pm)

A number of leading Irish musicians are to perform at a major concert in the Point Depot on Saturday 19th of June as part of the build-up to the enormous protests expected the following weekend when US President George Bush is due to visit Ireland.

The Concert has been organised by the Irish Anti-War Movement, one of the key groups who organised last years 100,000 strong protest against the US war on Iraq. The IAWM are also one of the prime movers behind the recently established STOP BUSH CAMPAIGN, which will be organising the demonstrations during the Bush visit. SIPTU the country’s largest trade union who are affiliated to the IAWM are also major sponsors of the event. Hot Press, the country leading music magazine is also sponsoring the concert.

The concert is aimed at raising awareness of the issues involved in the protests against Bush, particularly highlighting opposition to the US war and occupation of Iraq. Tens of thousands of leaflets and posters advertising the protests against Bush on June 25th and 26th will be available from stalls at the gig. The funds generated from the gig will be used to finance the costs of organising and advertising the STOP BUSH CAMPAIGN protests taking place the following weekend. Any surplus funds will go to the Irish Anti-War movement to finance its on-going anti-war work.

All of the musicians have generously offered their services to perform at the concert free.

Richard Boyd Barrett, chairperson of the Irish Anti-War movement and organiser of the gig said:

“The shocking pictures of US soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners and the on-going massacre of civilians have fully and finally confirmed how wrong the war on Iraq was and how right over 100,000 people in this country were to take to the streets in protest last year.”

“George Bush lied to the world about weapons of mass destruction. More than 10,000 innocent Iraqi’s and hundreds of US soldiers have paid with their lives for that lie. The war has not liberated Iraq but plunged it from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein to the tyranny of a brutal occupation.”

“Through protests and in every opinion poll the huge majority of people in this country have made clear their opposition to Bush’s war. They have also made clear their opposition to the continuing support being given to Bush by our government in allowing Shannon to be used by the US military.”

“This concert is one of the key events taking place in the run-up to Bush visit to indicate how the opposition to Bush’s war agenda spans across every sector of society and across the musical spectrum. It will be a platform to encourage tens of thousands to take to the streets in protest against Bush the following weekend. ”

“Our biggest problem has been getting a big enough venue because we know that there are simply enormous numbers of people who will want to support this event and the protests against Bush. We had planned for a much bigger outdoor venue but were unable to get planning permission because of the new planning regulations that require 16 weeks notice for an outdoor event.”

“However, the Point is the biggest indoor venue and with a capacity of 8,500 will send a very clear message from musicians and fans that the warmongering of Bush and those who support him must stop.”

“We are also at pains to emphasise against that this gig and the wider antiwar movement is in no way anti-American as some in the pro-war lobby falsely claim. We see this event and the protests as an expression of solidarity with the growing anti-war movement in the US itself and with the dead US soldiers who are victims of Bush’s war along with thousands of Iraqis. On the night we will have Iraqi, US and Irish anti-war activists speak out together as a united international voice against war and occupation.”

“As well as an important political event, this will be a great musical event in the great tradition of anti-war and protest music going back to the 1960’s and beyond. There has never been a more important time for musicians and indeed all sectors of society to make their voices heard against war and the dangerous direction in which George Bush is trying to take the world.”

“The anti-war movement is very grateful to the musicians who have offered their services for this event and who have had the courage to speak out against war. A special thanks has to go to Christy Moore without whose help this event would not be taking place. I am hopeful and confident that the public will also support the gig and the protests that follow.”

Tickets for the event are €30 standing €33.50 seated. (Plus €2 for agents / 12.5% phone and Internet bookings) Tickets from The Point, Ticket Master – Usual outlets. Ph: 0818 719300 Internet: www.ticketmaster. Also from CTB at Liberty Hall, Dublin. Ph: 01 8721122 www.libertythall.ie

Well, since Saddam was on Bush's and the US's payroll until just one month before we invaded Iraq... is there really that much of a difference?

[And if you didn't know that, that's not a hidden fact or anything. Saddam and his administration received more than a million dollars from Bush's Administration for some Saddam project, a month before we invaded.]

p.s. Target has a great sale on Birkas, in case yours doesn't come out of the cleaners in time... Edited by: Beat Surrender

I don't even know where to start with this one...

edit...yeah I do...First, it's a burqa and it's most commonly discussed when talking about the oppressive regime of the Taliban in Afghanistan. But finding that out might take some actual research on your part. Wouldn't want to trouble you.

I'll figure out if I feel like dealing with the other problems I have with your post later...Edited by: GlttrGrrl
