hm... there are too many options... what is your price range? what can your pc handle (inputs to soundcard)? is it loud around the space you'll be recording in? what is it for?

ah, i wasnt being specific enough...

well i was thinking in terms of a mic to use at performances, with a band, maybe - both loud and 'unplugged'... price range: nothing so far, as i cant afford anything right now, but ill save up for whatever feels right

i wasnt thinking pc-mic, more like a pa mic. i remember finding shure mics the best way back in my teens (the one with the light blue band? there are prolly thousands of models like that today...), but i really just wanna go for the better one...

info enough, or need i be even more specific?

yeah, the shure's the way to go if you're going to use it for
performance. shure sm58 is industry standard, really. i'm a cheap-o, so
i'm currently using an sm58 copy.

yup. it performs surprisingly well against the sm58, so i like it, and
other people who have sm58's think that they're using one, so hey, all
the better. if i ever get anywhere i'll upgrade but it suits me just
fine. i think it's called an shs om-500.

my recommendations:

-shure sm58 (can't go wrong)
-audix om2(never used it by i have the om-5 and it beats the shures for sure)
-sennheiser e835 (used once and was really impressed)

you pretty much can't go wrong with any of these though...

ok, i'd really love to hear some experiences from some fellow female singers, cause it could be different with different voice types. any good experiences with mics for soprano voices?

mcis do vary from person to person and it also depends on what sound you like the best... some people have some odd tastes when it comes to what they want their vocals to sound like so it really does depend... do you have a good local music store with a good return policy...

i'm not sure, really. but i live in copenhagen and there are at least 5 music stores, so i can ask around.

i know that in most (if not all) of them you can actually try them out at the store. but of course it's different having it at home, with the amp you're used to, etc...

Haul your gear in. If they're a good store, they'll let you try out the mics on your equipment.

Beta 5's were the in mic when I was a cash-rich trubadour, fine for everyone from Bono to Jeff Buckley (range that is)... I still use one for playing live now... What is the modern equivalent now?

exactly... that's all i know buti've never heard of the 5... there is a beta58 and that's a solid mic for shure... but with betas come difficulty in some live settings... their polarity can butt heads with other mics on stage creating a very tricky situation for the sound guy sometimes... i was gonna buy a beta58 but then i heard this news... then i found out the audix om5 is an ever better mic without the issues so i went with that... happy with my decision

Shure Beta 87A. A little expensive ($250), but you get studio quality vocals while playing live. I absolutely love mine.

only bummer about the 87a is that it needs phantom power and in some smaller venues you might not have that option... if i bought one i'd prolly buy a lil phantom power box to bring along... incredible mic for shure

some mics run off 48v power... a lot of the time they can get the power from the mixer/amps, but sometimes you can't... that's when this lil box steps in and powers your mic... it can also be helpful when using it at home and you don't wanna lug around a mixer/amp just to power your mic... makes it much more versatile...Edited by: coreybyrnes

Actually, I've had a few pokes (electric shocks) off my mic lately, not sure if that is the mic, the P.A. or the venue... But I can tell ya, I make funny faces at it is when I sing... Don't need electricity on the lips too

cillecille, no1. that sh*t you ranted about the BBC, dude! i have no idea what the fu*k you said there, it sure sounded clever but you sent my trippy little head into overload.

Anyway, to the matter in hand. i agree, the 58a is fu*kin' great for a dynamic mic, the frequency response is huge. But it is a little expensive for a first mic especially when you take into account you'll need a 48v as well. A great all-rounder is the much-acclaimed (again a shure) sm58/57 but i'd actually steer clear from that one as well as Collins do a copy with a reasonable response (50hz-16.5ks) for just £40 (imuso.co.uk) have a try of one of those you should be pretty damned impressed for the price.

But anyway, just try out loads (preferably in different environments) and buy whatever feels good for you, but if your describing yourself as soprano then i've always found akg's to have good body&clarity in that range, they're worth while giving a quick blast.

Happy shopping!

get a natural mic preferably a Sony. may run around 200 but there
is no better for vocals and miking guitars or turning it hot and
setting it in between and miking both. what a hot sound lol
